Updated on Aug 26, 2025, 09:45

Do you struggle to organise your thoughts and speak for 1-2 minutes in the IELTS Speaking cue card section? Don’t worry. The easiest way to improve is by practising IELTS cue cards regularly.

Cue card practice will help you familiarise yourself with common topics and build your vocabulary, fluency, and confidence. Regular practice reduces anxiety, making you feel more prepared to speak smoothly before the examiner on test day.

This page will cover everything you need about IELTS cue cards, also known as the Individual Long Turn Round. This part of the test links closely with the follow-up question section, where the examiner asks more in-depth questions based on your cue card topic.

Together, the cue card and follow-up rounds test your ability to discuss a topic in detail, with the cue card focusing on structured speech and the follow-up exploring related ideas. Let’s dive into mastering this crucial part of the IELTS Speaking Test.

5. Tips to Ace IELTS Cue Cards

If you're preparing for the IELTS Speaking test, knowing how to excel in Cue Card topics is essential.

1.

What is an IELTS Cue Card?

IELTS Cue Card, also known as the IELTS Individual Long Turn, falls under part 2 of IELTS.

In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test, you receive a cue card topic with prompts. You have one minute to prepare, then speak for 1-2 minutes without interruption.

This section tests your ability to think quickly, organise ideas, and speak fluently on a topic, unlike part 1's personal questions or Part 3's in-depth discussion. It’s essential for scoring well and demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively and naturally under time pressure.

This section assesses your ability to speak fluently, organise your thoughts, and use various vocabulary and grammatical structures. To ace the cue card round, you must focus on the following factors:

  • Speaking in a flow
  • Pronouncing your words right
  • Using words correctly and in the right context
  • Providing relevant answers
2.

How to Answer an IELTS Cue Card?

To effectively answer cue card question IELTS, it's important to approach the task with a clear structure and thoughtful responses. The key is to elaborate on your ideas with relevant examples, using a natural flow of speech.
