IELTS Slot Changing: Can We Postpone IELTS Exam?

It is possible to postpone the IELTS Exam even after completing your application process. Now, IDP allows you to transfer or cancel your IELTS Slot online.

How to Reschedule Your IELTS Exam Slot?

In case you find it difficult to attend your test on the given date, you can apply for a reschedule of the test slot. You can transfer your test date only if the test date is at least 15 days from the date you are applying for transfer. Also, you need to justify your reason by uploading supporting documents.

For 34 days and above, you can reschedule the test without stating any reason or supporting documents. When applying for a reschedule, your new IELTS slot should be within 3 months of your original date.

Remember, you can only change your IELTS Slot once.

However, ideally you should make an IELTS test transfer request at least 5 weeks before the test date either by email or in person. This 5-week period is calculated as the time period between your registered test date and your test transfer request date. The allocation of the new test date will be at the sole discretion of the Centre and is subject to the availability of a slot.

Note: If you make an IELTS test transfer request within 5 weeks of your test date without stating any compelling reason, then it may incur additional rescheduling fees of INR 3,300 (including all applicable taxes).
How to Cancel Your IELTS Exam Slot?

If needed, you can cancel your IELTS Exam Slot. You can apply for cancellation only if the test date is at least 15 days from your application date.

If the test date is beyond 15 days, and the payment is made via online mode, then you can apply for cancellation. However, you need to provide supporting documents. The cancellation will be done only if IELTS IDP approves the request.

Important points to note:

  • Cancellation requests received less than 15 days before the original test date will not be accepted, and no refund will be given to the candidate in this case.
  • The amount of refund received upon cancellation depends on the time period of your request:
    • At least 5 weeks ahead of your test date: A full refund will be received.
    • Within 5 weeks of your test date: If there is a compelling reason(along with the required documents), then you receive a refund with a 25% deduction; otherwise, there is no refund.
  • If the test date exceeds 34 days, you can cancel your IELTS Slot without uploading any supporting documents. However, you will have to enter your reason for the cancellation.

The supporting documents remain the same for both cancellation and test rescheduling.  You can contact your test centre for the latest information regarding the process.

Ans. You should book your IELTS slot early to avoid any last-minute rush, as slots may fill up quickly. According to the IELTS official website, you book your exam slot up to three months in advance or one week before the desired test date. However, it's recommended that you book it at least two to four weeks before your test date to secure your preferred test centre and date.

Q. How to book an IELTS Speaking slot?

Ans. The IDP Education gives you the option to book your IELTS Speaking slot if you have opted for the paper-based test. You can choose your IELTS Speaking test slot 15 days before your Reading, Writing and Listening test. However, if you don't choose one within 10 days, a slot will be assigned automatically.

Q. Did the IELTS fee increase in 2024?

Ans. Yes, according to the official IDP India website, the new IELTS Academic and General Training test fee is INR 17,000. The fee also varies according to the test type.

  • Computer-delivered IELTS is INR 17,000
  • IELTS Life Skills (A1 and B1) is INR 16,050
  • IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration is INR 17,250
Q. When should I take IELTS for the Fall intake in 2024?

Ans. To be ready for the September/Fall intake of 2024, taking the IELTS exam 6 months before the start of the academic session is advisable. This allows enough time to report the score, submit the application, and perform other necessary procedures. Start your preparations early to crack the exam on time.

Q. When are IELTS results released?

Ans. The IELTS test results will be available 13 days after you complete your IELTS using the paper-based method. For the computer-based test, results are available 2 days after your test date. IELTS for UKVI results are available 13 days after your test date, and IELTS for Life Skills results are available within 7 days after the test date.

Q. Are there any additional charges besides the IELTS exam fee while registering for the IELTS?

Ans. No, there aren’t any additional charges applied for the IELTS test apart from the registration fee. There are additional administrative charges for rescheduling or cancelling your test. Also, if you want to send your test results to more than five universities, you can apply for IELTS ATRF or Additional Test Report Forms. However, there will be an administrative charge of  INR 250  per university.

Q. Which month is easy for the IELTS exam?

Ans. The difficulty level of the IELTS exam does not vary based on the month you take the test. The exam pattern, question format, and scoring criteria remain consistent throughout the year. However, the exam board generally adds speaking topics in January, September, and May. Therefore, the best time to take this exam would be before the questions change, meaning in August, April, and December.

Q. Can I pass IELTS on the first attempt?

Ans. There isn’t any passing or failing cut-off for IELTS. The eligible score might vary for each university. However, an average score ranges from 5.5 to 6.5. It is possible to score high on your very first attempt through proper preparation and practice. If you aim to score a high band on your first attempt, it is important to draft a plan and begin practising persistently. You can get IELTS resources from Leap, which are drafted by our IELTS Experts.

Q. Can I register for the IELTS test without selecting a specific test date?

Ans. No, you cannot register for the IELTS test without selecting a specific test date. During the registration process, you must choose a specific date and location from the available options. This is because the IELTS test is conducted on specific dates and at specific test centres to ensure a smooth and organised examination process.

Q. Will I get my IELTS result by post?

Ans. No, the IELTS result is not sent by post. You will be informed of the results via an SMS once they become available on the official website of IDP IELTS India. To access the results, you will need to log in to your account and access the Test Report Form. The Test Report Form will display your band score for the individual sections and the overall band score.

Q. How long are IELTS scores valid?

Ans. IELTS scores are typically valid for 2 years from your test date. The IELTS score validity is to ensure that your knowledge is intact. Higher time validity can affect your knowledge since you might forget things with time. However, check the requirements of your university before taking a retest, and check if the validity is negotiable.

Q. What should I do if the desired test date is not available at my nearest test centre?

Ans. If the preferred test date is unavailable at your nearest test centre, here’s what you can do:

  • Look for other test centres.
  • Consider different dates
  • Plan earlier to secure your preferred test date and centre
  • Contact the test centre and inquire about other options
Q. Can I retake the IELTS test to improve my band score?

Ans. Yes, you can retake the IELTS to improve your band score. You can have a retake as many times as you need. However, it is recommended to take a 2-3 month gap between the tests to make sure that you have enough preparation time. Also note that IELTS recently announced a ‘one-skill retake’ facility, which lets you retake just one section of IELTS.
