FAQs

Q. What is the TOEFL score range, and how is it calculated?

Ans. The TOEFL iBT score ranges from 0 to 120. Each section is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 30, and the scores are combined to calculate the overall score. The scoring considers the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions. There is no negative marking in TOEFL.

Q. Can I take the TOEFL exam multiple times?

Ans. You can take the TOEFL exam as often as you like. However, there must be at least a 3-day gap between attempts. Test-takers can retake the TOEFL to improve their scores or meet specific university or immigration requirements.

Q. How long does it take to receive TOEFL scores?

Ans. You can get your TOEFL iBT scores within 4-8 days of your test. The results for TOEFL Essentials are also released quickly, within 6-8 days. As per the new update, ETS will notify you right after the exam when you can expect your result. This new update is to help you plan out your application process.

Q. Is there a limit on how many times I can send my TOEFL scores to universities?

Ans. No, there isn’t. You can send your TOEFL scores to as many universities as you like. However, only the first four universities are free of charge. Anything additional to that will require a fee of INR 1.641. You can change or modify the first four universities till 10 PM before the day of your exam.

Q. Can I view my TOEFL scores online?

Ans. Absolutely. You can view your TOEFL scores online on the official ETS website. You must log in with your credentials and head to the results section to view your TOEFL result. You will receive your scores within 4-8 days of your TOEFL iBT test.

Q. Is TOEFL harder than IELTS?

Ans. TOEFL and IELTS are similar in pattern and format. They evaluate the same sections: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. They cover almost the same syllabus. They even have questions that are similar to each other. So, logically, they have almost the same difficulty level. However, students' general opinion is that IELTS is easier than TOEFL. ETS has recently released updates, such as shorter exam duration, to make it easier for students.

Q. Can I cancel my TOEFL scores after viewing them online?

Ans. Yes, you can cancel your TOEFL results if you are unhappy with your score. Once you get your result, you can do this online by logging into your ETS account. Once you cancel your scores, they will not be sent to any universities, and you will not be able to view or use them.

Q. Which is cheaper among IELTS and TOEFL in India?

Ans. TOEFL is cheaper when compared to IELTS, though there is no significant difference. IELTS Academic costs INR 16,250, whereas TOEFL iBT costs ₹16,134. Since the difference is small, the price is not a distinguishing factor when deciding between the two.
