Everything you need to know about TOEFL

overview

One of the most popular English language proficiency exams is the TOEFL iBT, which universities in the United States, Canada, and other countries accept. Reading, listening, speaking, and writing are all academic English skills that are tested on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), given by ETS. These skills are used in college and university courses. ETS has launched the TOEFL Home edition for applicants who want to take the TOEFL exam during the epidemic from the comfort of their homes. Candidates who qualify to take the TOEFL exam will be pleasantly surprised.

The TOEFL iBT computer delivery method is frequently used to administer the TOEFL exam (internet-based test). ETS introduced the TOEFL Test on Paper in India to provide wider access to applicants who wish to take the TOEFL exam. A variant of the TOEFL iBT exam that applicants can take in the convenience of their homes is the TOEFL Home Edition as well. To take the TOEFL exam in one of its three formats—TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home edition, or TOEFL on paper—candidates must spend US$190. Read on to learn more about the new TOEFL syllabus, the TOEFL iBT test, TOEFL registration, and the ETS TOEFL exam as we continue our discussion.

The TOEFL Exam is what?

The ETS TOEFL exam 2022 is an English language proficiency test for students intending to continue their education in English-speaking countries. Candidates must submit their TOEFL results as part of their application if they wish to study abroad in an English-speaking setting. The TOEFL requirement may occasionally be waived, albeit entirely at the university administration's discretion. Educational Testing Services (ETS), which is also in charge of delivering the TOEFL iBT exam and providing score results to all test takers, administers the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, in its full name.

Due to the epidemic, students can now take the TOEFL test from the comfort of their homes thanks to the development of the "TOEFL Home Edition." Beginning on August 21, 2021, students will have access to the equally useful TOEFL Essential Test, a reduced version of the TOEFL. ETS will now accept Aadhar Cards as proof of enrollment for Indian applicants signing up for the TOEFL exam.

Students who want to pursue their studies overseas can choose from a range of TOEFL exam dates offered throughout the year, a range of test sites distributed around major cities, or they can take the TOEFL iBT Home Edition test remotely from their own residences. Candidates getting ready to take the TOEFL exam will learn what the most important TOEFL exam topics are as they read along.

Forms of the TOEFL Exam

The TOEFL iBT Home Edition test is identical to the TOEFL iBT test you would take at a testing facility, except it is administered in your home's privacy and is overseen online by a human proctor. The most common exam at the moment is the ETS TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test), which is given at a TOEFL test centre. ETS The Speaking component of the TOEFL Test on Paper is given three days after the Reading, Listening and Writing sections at a TOEFL test centre. It is identical to the TOEFL iBT and is given in two sessions. Your speaking session will be streamed live to an actual proctor. The TOEFL PBT (Paper-delivered) Test is no longer offered as of April 11, 2021. However, the TOEFL PBT score is only good for two years after the test date.

Why take the TOEFL Test?

Most students who want to attend college abroad take the ETS TOEFL exam. Students who take the TOEFL exam are also qualified for various scholarships and are helped with the visa application process by those looking for jobs overseas. Each of the four academic English skills—reading, listening, speaking, and writing—is assessed on the ETS TOEFL Exam in the same way colleges and universities use them in their curricula. Examining a candidate's competency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English is the major goal of the TOEFL test. TOEFL, which is approved by more than 11,000 colleges and institutions worldwide, including those in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the United States, and throughout Europe and Asia, is one of the most well-liked English-language exams for students who want to study abroad.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language offers many benefits to students who want to further their studies overseas (TOEFL). The TOEFL is the exam of choice for individuals who want to pursue higher education overseas since more TOEFL scores are transferred to universities in the US and Canada than all other English-language tests combined. Similarly to this, institutions in Germany, France, the United States, and Canada receive more TOEFL scores than those from other English language tests. The TOEFL is administered by ETS, a company that guarantees students a fair and unbiased scoring process, adding authenticity to the test.

The ETS TOEFL exam registration process is accessible every day of the week, around the clock. There are various ways for candidates to sign up for the TOEFL exam, including in person, by phone, by mail, or online (via an authorised agent). Candidates should be advised that there is a US$40 late registration fee and that the TOEFL late registration period expires four days before the test date. 7 days before the test, the TOEFL online registration session expires. Indian applicants who want to take the TOEFL must pay a fee of $190.

The end of this service has not yet been specified.

Thanks to ETS, test-takers can start taking the TOEFL Essentials Test starting on August 21, 2021.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, several colleges were obliged to enact test-optional policies or rely on inferior exams, which were initially more practical and cost-effective than traditional language exams but weren't always of high quality or long-lasting. The TOEFL Essentials test, a higher-quality testing option, has been launched by specialised English test provider ETS in response to the epidemic.

Warning: TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test during COVID -19 has been launched. Coronavirus

In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, ETS, the company that manages the TOEFL test, has decided to provide the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test in locations where the TOEFL iBT is administered to assist students who wish to pursue studies overseas. Iran and China's mainland have not yet put such plans into action. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test was created because the continuing coronavirus pandemic forced the temporary closure of TOEFL Test Centers. Candidate equipment must, nevertheless, conform to the ETS registration equipment standards. Learn more about the TOEFL at Home as you read.

New TOEFL exam format beginning in August 2019

The administering body has dramatically reduced the number of questions to three categories—reading, listening and speaking. The exam now lasts 3 hours as opposed to the previous 3 and 30 minutes. The candidate's top scores from all legitimate TOEFL results from the two years prior are used for "MyBest Score," which ETS has also just introduced. ETS, the company that manages the TOEFL exam, has introduced yet another set of initiatives to enhance the TOEFL iBT® test experience for students. Students from all across the world can now reserve test dates for the TOEFL exam.

TOEFL Home Edition: What is it?

Adaptations Offered by ETS TOEFL

iBT Home Edition

TOEFL iBT Home Edition is the company that conducts the TOEFL exam. For students who wish to take the TOEFL iBT test to seek study abroad possibilities, ETS is making every effort to make it as accessible as is practical. TOEFL testing facilities have been forced to function at reduced capacity or close temporarily due to the ongoing epidemic, COVID-19, and localised lockdowns. This makes it difficult for those who want to take the TOEFL exam to do so. In locations where the computer-based TOEFL iBT Test was previously available, ETS has responded to the situation by introducing the TOEFL Home Edition for the convenience of students desiring to pursue an overseas education. Candidates must confirm that their equipment complies with the ETS registration guidelines.

ETS provides a variety of seminars that introduce candidates to this recent TOEFL at a Home option on its official website. Until test centres in various countries can again operate at full capacity, students can take the TOEFL at home. In 6 to 10 days, the student would learn their TOEFL Home Edition results. Candidates should be advised that due to the ongoing epidemic, the issuance of paper score reports may be delayed.

To ensure the smooth operation of the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, ETS has put in place a number of security measures, including live proctors and artificial intelligence technology. The same accommodations for test-takers with disabilities can be requested by students. Other substantial modifications for giving the TOEFL at home have not been implemented by ETS. Candidates are advised to visit the official website to learn more about the topic. ETS has also temporarily waived the rescheduling fees for all exam takers due to the current coronavirus outbreak.

How are TOEFL test scores determined?

To determine TOEFL scores, both human raters and computerised scoring methods are used. This is carried out in order to give a complete and accurate picture of the candidate's aptitude. Even though the automatic grading method is objective, it does not evaluate how effectively the language and content are employed. In addition to the form, human raters must take into account a wider variety of criteria, such as the calibre of the ideas and substance. Additionally, you must answer at least one question in each category. For both reading and listening, you are required to answer at least one question. You must attempt at least one of the speaking and writing assignments. The result of the TOEFL iBT test is a final score on a four-scale.

What is a Score on the TOEFL?

The TOEFL test results are neither excellent nor abhorrent. The minimal standard for applicants would be the TOEFL score determined by the universities. Any score over the range would increase their chances of admission, while any score below the range may make the entrance more difficult.

To personalise your exam experience and give you a better understanding of your score, ETS has included 4 to 5 competency levels for each skill. Where your score falls within that range indicates how proficient you are at that skill. This will provide you a clear idea of how you did, as well as your strengths and potential growth areas. What is a Score on the TOEFL?

The TOEFL test results are neither excellent nor abhorrent. The minimum standard for applicants would be the university's TOEFL score.

This will provide you with a clear idea of how you did, as well as your strengths and potential growth areas. Test takers can use the chart below to better understand their TOEFL iBT Scores.

Q. What is a good TOEFL score?

No such thing as a good TOEFL score exists. Students must obtain scores that are equal to or greater than the established grade for each university's TOEFL cut-off. Candidates should be aware that getting a better TOEFL score would automatically improve their chances of getting into the institution and also put them in the lead for any scholarships the university may be offering.

Q. How can a candidate opt for a paper copy of the TOEFL Score Report?

The candidate will be given the option to get both an online score report and a paper copy sent by mail when registering for a test. The TOEFL score report wouldn't be sent out until 11 days after the results were announced, even though the student would receive his online results in six days.

Q. Is the TOEFL test hard?

A test's difficulty is a matter of personal preference. But don't worry; the TOEFL test was introduced to assess your command of the English language, not to torture you. The test was developed with the student in mind, and an effective preparation strategy would produce favourable outcomes.

Q. What if I entered incorrect information during the registration process?

Except for their name, date of birth, and gender, which may only be altered by contacting TOEFL Services, test takers can update their personal information online in their accounts. To get the job done, they must get in touch with the TOEFL officials by phone at 16097717100 or 18778633546, or via email at toefl@ets.org.

Q. What are MyBest™ Scores?

The candidate's top scores for each component from all of their legitimate TOEFL iBT tests from the previous two years are combined by this freshly added feature. Confused? Never be. You can display your best overall performance with MyBestTM scores, also known as superscores, by combining your top section scores from all test dates during the last two years. The applicants' regular scores as well as their "MyBest Scores" will be included in all TOEFL iBT score reports sent out after August 2019. The official TOEFL website has additional details on the subject.

Tips for TOEFL Speaking Practice

View the top TOEFL speaking tips and strategies to improve your score.

  • Increase your vocabulary and learn appropriate idioms.
  • Learn grammar rules, and use them when speaking in a natural way.
  • Practice pronouncing words clearly, paying close attention to your word stress, intonation, and pauses. Use a range of products and websites to sharpen your pronunciation skills.
  • Give yourself some time to think about what you're about to say before you speak. Instead of trying to write down every word you intend to say, make a note of a few keywords and ideas. (When a response has been read, raters will be able to know and will give it a lower rating.)
  • Utilize signal words and idioms to connect ideas, offer fresh information or viewpoints, and emphasise important concepts or phrases. The audience will understand what you are saying more readily as a result. (Examples: "On the one hand, but on the other hand, what that means is...," "The first reason is...," "another difference is...," etc.)

Strategies for Preparing for the TOEFL

Candidates taking the test should be aware that there are numerous internet resources for studying for the TOEFL exam. Therefore, applicants should only use information from reputable sources and reference the official TOEFL website for the most recent TOEFL information. The new, shorter TOEFL exam, which debuted at some point last year, should be known to candidates taking the TOEFL exam. Check out our essential tips for candidates on TOEFL exam preparation.

How Should I Prepare for the TOEFL?

Resources for TOEFL preparation: Candidates should be aware that there is no set strategy for getting ready. The same thing that might be appropriate for Person A might not necessarily be appropriate for Person B, and vice versa. In order to assist our readers in enhancing their TOEFL exam scores, we have provided a list of different study methods in this post. We ask that customers select and use the method that best suits their requirements.

How Can I Study at Home for the TOEFL?

Candidates shouldn't combine their TOEFL test preparation at the testing facility with their home preparation. The only difference between the two tests is the test environment. Many times, test-takers may feel overwhelmed. Candidates should be informed that ETS, the organisation in charge of delivering the exam, now offers TOEFL examinations at home if they desire to take them in the convenience of their own house. Candidates who lack a suitable environment at home or the necessary system requirements may take the test at a TOEFL test centre if the COVID-19 local restrictions permit.

How much time should I allocate to studying for the TOEFL exam?

Additionally, this query is really specific. Some test takers might need two to three months to adequately prepare for the TOEFL, while others might require more time or less time. Therefore, there is no set amount of time. The TOEFL test dates should only be reserved by applicants after they have studied extensively for the exam.

A thorough TOEFL preparation manual and section-by-section resources that concentrate on particular TOEFL exam topics will both be available on the ETS website. Candidates can email us with any inquiries they may have concerning the same.

TOEFL exam day advice

As is common for exams, you should arrive at the TOEFL testing location at least 30 minutes early to settle in. Visit the centre's address a day beforehand to make sure you know where to go. As we explain the most important TOEFL exam day recommendations, keep reading.

  • If you have been studying English since you were a small child, you shouldn't be concerned about your TOEFL score because you should do well.
  • Gather your thoughts for a moment before starting the Reading section.
  • Don't study on the day of the test. It won't do you any good and will simply add to your tension.
  • Complete a lot of practice centre numbers, centre proficiency tests, and tasks for projects for synthesising.
  • Because most computer testing centres have air conditioning, dress comfortably and warmly. You don't want to have "cold feet" on test day.
  • The writing component has a 20-minute time limit. They are just enough to verify your essay once, despite the fact that they can seem to be sufficient. So take action now!
  • The Speaking and Listening phases demand a lot of concentration. The included headphones will not be noise-cancelling, so you must pay close attention.
dates

Dates of the 2022 TOEFL Exam: Like all other worldwide standardised examinations, candidates may take the TOEFL exam at any time of the year. Numerous test centres offer the TOEFL exam all year long. Since safety has always been ETS's top priority, the TOEFL test dates may be limited at the TOEFL test centres due to the current Covid situation. Candidates who want to take the test must go to the official website to set up a profile as a test taker and complete the TOEFL registration process. The TOEFL test dates are listed here for candidates to review.

ETS, the organisation in charge of administering the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), has made the decision to make the TOEFL at-home test available in regions where the TOEFL iBT test is offered in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The TOEFL at Home test doesn't have any set dates. The TOEFL at Home exam can be scheduled for a date that works for the candidate. For the TOEFL test in 2022, candidates would need to meet the prerequisite system requirements and be in a comfortable setting.

Latest Updates TOEFL Exam Dates

The most recent information regarding the TOEFL dates will be covered in this section. Or any data that TOEFL test takers may find useful.

ETS resumes TOEFL paper-delivered test from December 11, 2021, onwards

ETS has reinstated the TOEFL paper-delivered test as of December 11 in an effort to make the exam more accessible to students who wish to take it. Candidates can apply up to two days before the test date for the TOEFL paper-delivered test, which is offered twice a month. The paper-delivered TOEFL exam costs US$190, which is comparable to the other TOEFL exam forms.

The same four skills will be tested by the TOEFL iBT paper-delivered test, which will be administered over the course of two testing sessions and delivered on paper. At a testing facility, the TOEFL Reading, Listening, and Writing parts would be completed on paper. Within three days of the paper portions, candidates must complete the TOEFL Speaking section online at home under the supervision of a human proctor.

The TOEFL exam gets costlier as the TOEFL Exam Fee increases to US$190 from US$185

The TOEFL exam fee has increased from the previous TOEFL Exam Fee of US$185 to US$190, and candidates who plan to take the TOEFL iBT test must be aware of this. Candidates who want to register for the ETS TOEFL exam must pay a US$190 TOEFL Exam Fee.

ETS Launches TOEFL Essentials Test for test-takers, to be available from August 21, 2021

The TOEFL Essentials test will be available to test-takers starting on August 21, 2021, according to ETS (Educational Testing Service), the organisation that administers the TOEFL iBT test. ETS has introduced the TOEFL Essentials test, a higher-quality testing option in the wake of the pandemic, as a result of the ongoing pandemic and a shortage of better speciality English test providers. On our website, candidates who plan to take the TOEFL Essentials exam can learn more about this exam style.

Coronavirus Covid-19 TOEFL Exam Alert: TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test during COVID -19, Launched

To help students who want to study abroad, ETS, the organisation that administers the TOEFL test, has chosen to provide the TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition test in regions where TOEFL iBT is offered in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Iran and mainland China have yet to implement similar programmes. In response to TOEFL Test Centers being temporarily closed owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test was developed. Candidates must, however, make sure that their equipment satisfies the ETS registration equipment requirements. As you read, learn more about the TOEFL at Home.

When should you take the TOEFL test?

The ideal time to take the TOEFL exam is sometimes a point of confusion for students. The fact that there are no set TOEFL test dates is one of its advantages. Once test-takers have studied for the TOEFL exam, it is advisable that they register for their test. Experts advise waiting 45 days before the deadline for university admission before taking your first TOEFL exam. If the first TOEFL test results were unsatisfactory, candidates would have ample time to take the test again.

TOEFL 2022 Dates in India

To reserve their preferred test centre and accessible TOEFL test dates, candidates are urged to reserve their TOEFL exam slot well in advance. Is TOEFL harder than the IELTS?

Candidates should be aware that both exams have the same goal—testing the candidate's command of the English language. As a result, the core of both exams is the same. When it comes to the format and content of the exams, they differ. Therefore, while discussing which of the two examinations is more difficult, both are comparable. In other words, someone having trouble with the TOEFL will have the same issues when taking the IELTS exam, and vice versa.
