What is IELTS UKVI?
IELTS UKVI hosts both Academic and General Training test versions.
The format, modules, duration, and scoring are the same as the regular test. However, there are two significant differences between IELTS UKVI and the regular IELTS test. Let’s find out.
Difference Between IELTS and IELTS UKVI
Firstly, You can only write IELTS UKVI at a SELT-approved centre. What are they?
The UK government approved some IELTS centres after ensuring extra security measures. These centres are also known as SELT-approved centres. Before booking a slot at your nearest IELTS test centre, checking whether it offers the UKVI test is essential.
Second, the fee is slightly higher than the regular test. Below is a breakdown.
Type of test | Purpose | IELTS UKVI Fees 2024 |
IELTS for UKVI (Academic) | For those wishing to pursue education at undergraduate or postgraduate levels in the UK | INR 17,250 |
IELTS for UKVI (General Training) | For those wishing to move to the UK for immigration or pursue an education below the degree level | INR 17,250 |
IELTS UKVI: Eligibility
IELTS UKVI has the exact eligibility requirements for the regular test, so anyone can take it. You don’t need to worry about your age or qualifications. However, if you’re under 18, you must submit a letter from your guardian.
IELTS has a strict no passport, no test policy. It’s crucial to have a valid passport to register for IELTS UKVI. Your passport will be your proof of identity during the registration and the test.
IELTS UKVI: Minimum Score Requirements
If you’re taking the IELTS UKVI for university entrance, it’s best to aim for 6.0 and above. The score will vary depending on which university you apply to.
Typically, universities will demand a score of at least 6.0 for UG and 6.5 for PG courses. However, this can also vary depending on which course you choose!
You can look for specific IELTS requirements on the official university websites.
The IELTS Score for a UK visa is shown below.
Type of Visa | Minimum IELTS UKVI Score |
Student visa: below degree level and pre-sessional courses | 4.0 overall, and in each of the four skills |
Student visa: degree level and above | 5.5 overall, and each of the four skills |
Tier 1/2 (Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur and General Visa) | 4.0 overall, and in each of the four skills |
IELTS Life Skills
You can consider taking the IELTS Life Skills test if:
- You wish to move in with a spouse or relative already residing there
- If you’re already living in the UK but wish to get citizenship
- If you’re living outside of the UK but aiming to get permanent residence there
IELTS Life Skills is a single test that combines speaking and listening tests. It lasts about 16-22 minutes. The test is divided into three skill levels, each serving a different purpose:
- IELTS Life Skills A1
- IELTS Life Skills A2
- IELTS Life Skills B1
Unlike the IELTS Academic, this test focuses on everyday situations. The questions will revolve around work, weather, or transportation. The IELTS Life Skills test assesses basic English communication skills rather than academic proficiency.
Similar to the UKVI test, IELTS Life Skills is a part of the Secure English Language Tests (SELT) approved by the British government. The fee for IELTS Life Skills was recently revised to INR 16,050.
Unlike the other IELTS exams, IELTS Life Skills doesn't provide a band score. Instead, it offers a simple 'Pass' or 'Fail'. A pass indicates your ability to communicate effectively in English-speaking environments, while a fail suggests you may need more preparation.
The exam follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels, including A1, A2, and B1, clearly indicating your English proficiency level.
