Quick Read
- A UK student visa requires IELTS UKVI with at least 5.5 in every section.
- University bands range from 6.0 to 7.5 depending on the course.
- IELTS for UKVI works for both admission and your visa application.
- CBSE and ICSE students may skip IELTS with an MOI letter at some universities.
IELTS Score for UK Student Visa: What the Home Office Actually Requires
The answer has two parts: what the Home Office needs for your visa and what your university needs for admission. Missing either one holds up your application.
The Home Office does not accept standard IELTS Academic for your visa application. They only accept a Secure English Language Test (SELT). For Indian students, that meansย IELTS for UKVI.
| Study Level | CEFR Level | IELTS UKVI Minimum | No section below |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree level and above | B2 | 5.5 overall | 5.5 in each section |
| Below degree level (foundation, pre-sessional) | B1 | 4.0 overall | 4.0 in each section |
Critical 2026 update:ย ย From March 22, 2026, IELTS UKVI will be fully computer-based. From June 27, 2026, all IELTS tests globally move to computer-only. If you are in India planning a paper-based IELTS Academic, your window closes June 27, 2026. A “Writing on Paper” hybrid option may be available for standard Academic/General tests confirm at idpielts.com when booking.
Counselor insight: The 5.5 visa requirement is essentially a legal minimum. Your university will almost always want more than that. So just focus on hitting your university’s number and you will clear the visa bar automatically in most cases.
Why the Per-Section Rule Catches Indian Students Off Guard
An applicant who scores Listening 7.0, Reading 7.0, Speaking 6.5, and Writing 5.0 has an overall band of 6.4 butย fails the UK student visa standardย because Writing fell below 5.5. The Home Office reads each section individually.
For most Indian students, Writing is the weakest skill. Target 6.0 in Writing during prep so a bad test day does not drop you below 5.5.
Counselor insight: Writing is the section that most often causes a satisfactory overall result to miss the visa cut. Do not leave Writing prep to the last two weeks. Always verify the department-level requirement on the course page; it is almost always higher than the university’s homepage number, and it is the one on your offer letter.

IELTS Academic or IELTS UKVI: Which Test Should You Actually Book?
Both tests are identical in content and difficulty. The difference is what each one unlocks.
| Factor | IELTS Academic | IELTS for UKVI |
| UK university admission | Yes | Yes |
| UK student visa | No | Yes |
| Test content | Same | Same |
| Fee in India (effective April 1, 2026) | Rs. 19,000 | Rs. 19,250 |
| Test centres | Wide availability | Designated SELT centres only |
| Results timeline | 1 to 13 days (paper, until June 27, 2026) | 1โ2 days (computer-based, from March 22, 2026) |
| Test delivery (from March 22, 2026) | Paper + computer (paper ends June 27, 2026) | Computer-only (from March 22, 2026) |
| OET (Occupational English Test) | Not a SELT, not accepted for UK student visa | Accepted for NMC/GMC registration only |
The fee gap is Rs. 250. Booking the wrong test and resitting costs Rs. 19,250 plus weeks of delay. Book IELTS for UKVI. It covers both admission and visas in a single test. PTE Academic UKVI is also accepted for UK visas. TOEFL iBT is accepted for admission only, not for the visa. Duolingo is not accepted for UK visas.
What About the “Writing on Paper” Hybrid Option?
For standard IELTS Academic only: a “Writing on Paper” hybrid may be available in India from mid-2026, allowing handwritten Writing Tasks while Listening and Reading are on computer. This option isย not available for IELTS UKVI; all four components must be on computer. Check availability at idpielts.com, as it is centre-specific.
IELTS Score for UK: Band-by-Band Reality Check for Indian Students

Which Indian Students Can Skip IELTS: MOI Waiver and Exemptions
You may qualify for a Medium of Instruction (MOI) waiver if
- You studied Class 10 and 12 at a CBSE, ICSE, ISC, Cambridge, or IB school with English as the teaching language
- Your bachelor’s degree was delivered entirely in English at a recognised Indian university
What you need:ย A signed MOI letter on official college letterhead, stamped by the principal or registrar. Some universities also ask for anย ECCTISย reference number. Apply at ecctis.com; it takes two to four weeks.
Where it does not work: Oxford, UCL, Imperial, and most Russell Group universities do not accept MOI waivers from Indian applicants. This route applies mainly at mid-ranked institutions. Check the English language exemption section on the specific course page before assuming you qualify.

IELTS Score Requirements for UK Universities and Visa: Which Band Do You Actually Need?
B.Tech / B.Sc โ MSc CS or Engineering
Most MSc programs in technical fields require an overall score of 6.5, with no section below 6.0. Russell Group programs at UCL and Edinburgh typically push that to 7.0. Plan for a 6.5 as your floor and target a 7.0 if your shortlist includes those universities.
BBA / BCom โ MSc Finance, Management, or MBA
Schools like Warwick, Bath, and Durham typically ask for 6.5 to 7.0 overall. Writing often has a specific minimum of 6.5 in these programs. If Writing has always been your weaker area in English, factor that in when you start preparing.
BSc Nursing โ NMC Registration
This process is not the same as a standard university application. The Nursing and Midwifery Council requires 7.0 in all four sections with no exceptions. It does not matter what the university’s general minimum says. Your IELTS UKVI result needs to show 7.0 in every individual section. OET Grade B in all four components is accepted as an equivalent alternative; healthcare students should compare both before booking.
MBBS โ GMC Registration
The General Medical Council (GMC) requires IELTS Academic with a minimum of 7.5 overall and 7.0 in each of the four individual sections. This requirement is separate from and higher than what your university requires. The GMC also accepts OET as an alternative; check the GMC’s accepted tests list before booking. Confirm the exact requirement at gmc-uk.org before sitting your test.
When to Take IELTS for the UK 2026-27 Intake: Month-by-Month Plan
| Month | What to do? |
|---|---|
| April to May 2026 | Board or semester exams are completed. Now is the time to verify the IELTS requirement on each course page for your shortlist. |
| May to June 2026 | Begin preparation. Six to eight weeks of focused work is the realistic minimum for most students aiming for 6.5 or above. Paper-based IELTS Academic ends globally on June 27, 2026 do not book a paper test after this date. |
| July 2026 | Take your IELTS UKVI. Computer-based results arrive in 1โ2 days. This is the last viable test date for September 2026 applications. |
| July to August 2026 | Submit applications using your Test Report Form (TRF) number. Universities need it to issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). |
| September to October 2026 | CAS issued. Apply for your UK student visa using your IELTS UKVI result. |
| January 2027 intake | If September 2026 is not possible, take IELTS UKVI by October 2026 and apply for the January start. See UK intakes 2026โ27 for deadlines. |
What is it for the students? IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date. A July 2026 result stays valid until July 2028, which covers both admission and visa comfortably. If you sat the test back in 2024, check whether the score will still be within the two-year window by the time your visa application goes in.
What to Do If Your IELTS Score Is Not Enough for UK Universities?
Missing your target score is frustrating, but it does not automatically mean deferring by a full year. Here are your actual options.
IELTS One Skill Retake
If you need to improve just one section, you can retake it without retaking the whole test. The IELTS One Skill Retake lets you redo only one section. It costs around Rs.12,650, is available only for the computer-delivered test, and has to be booked within 60 days of your original sitting. For a half-band gap in one area, this option is almost always the right first move.
Pre-sessional English course
I scored 6.0, but the university requires a minimum score of 6.5. Many UK universities run six- to ten-week pre-sessional English programs. If you complete it successfully, you will receive conditional entry without needing to retake the IELTS. One thing most guides skip over: these courses require a UKVI score for eligibility, not a standard academic result. That is yet another reason to book a UKVI from the start.
Full resit
If you missed in more than one section by a meaningful margin, a full retake is the more honest answer. Use the gap time specifically to focus on your weakest area. For most Indian students, Writing and Speaking are where scores drop.
Do not apply to a university with a score below the visa minimum of 5.5. Even if the admissions process accepts it, the Home Office will not. A visa refusal is a much bigger problem than a delayed application.
Documents Indian Students Need When Submitting IELTS Score for UK Universities and Visa
| Document | Purpose | India-specific detail |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) | Proof of score for university and visa | Issued digitally; TRF number required for CAS application |
| Passport | Must match the ID used at the test center. | Use the same passport throughout; name mismatches cause delays |
| MOI letter | IELTS waiver for eligible students | Signed by principal or registrar on college letterhead; must confirm English was the medium of instruction |
| Ecctis reference number | Needed if you are using an MOI letter and your degree is not from a UK institution | Apply at ecctis.com; takes two to four weeks to process |
| SELT unique reference number | Home Office uses this to verify your UKVI score online | Automatically issued with your IELTS UKVI result |
| Financial maintenance proof | Shows you can fund your stay in the UK | From November 2025: Rs. 1,62,000/month (ยฃ1,529) for London; Rs. 1,24,200/month (ยฃ1,171) outside London. (Source: UK Home Office. Figures based on ยฃ1,529 and ยฃ1,171, respectively, at approx. Rs. 106/GBP verify current rate before submitting). |
Before You Book Your IELTS for the UK
1. Book the IELTS for UKVI, not the standard academic version. It covers both your university application and your visa in one sitting. The extra cost is Rs.250. Getting it wrong costs you Rs.19,250 and several weeks.
2. Always refer to the specific course page for the IELTS requirement. Departments set their own minimums, and those override the number on the university homepage.
3. Practice on a computer-based test format only. From March 22, 2026, IELTS UKVI is computer-delivered exclusively. All IELTS tests will be computer-only starting June 27, 2026. Use Leap’s free IELTS mock test (computer-based) to get familiar with the interface.
4. If you went to a CBSE, ICSE, or IB school, find out whether your target university accepts an MOI letter before registering for the test. At eligible universities, it can replace IELTS entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Score for UK Universities and Visa
-
What is the minimum IELTS score for UK universities and visa in 2026?
For degree-level courses, you need IELTS UKVI with at least 5.5 in each of the four sections, which works out to 5.5 overall at a minimum. That is CEFR level B2. For courses below degree level, it drops to 4.0 in all sections (CEFR B1). These are Home Office minimums. Your university will almost certainly require more than that for admission.
-
Do I need IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI to study in the UK?
Book IELTS for UKVI. Both count for university admission, but only UKVI satisfies the Home Office visa requirement. If you sit for the standard Academic and then apply for your visa, you will have to book and pay for UKVI separately. The fee difference is only Rs.250, so there is really no reason to go with the standard version.
-
What IELTS score does Oxford University require?
Oxford typically requires an overall score of 7.5, with no section below 7.0. Some humanities and law courses specify 7.5 in every individual section, not just on average. Science-based courses sometimes accept 7.0 overall with particular section minimums. Check the specific course page on Oxford’s site, not the general admissions page.
-
Can I study in the UK with a 6.0 IELTS score?
Yes, at several universities. A 6.0 overall provides you with access to institutions generally ranked between QS 150 and 300. It can also lead to pre-sessional English programs at universities that require 6.5, allowing you to enter without resitting. Universities like Coventry, Northumbria, and Brunel accept 6.0 for many postgraduate courses.
-
Is a 5.5 IELTS score enough for UK universities?
For the visa, yes. For direct degree-level admission, usually not. At 5.5, most of your realistic options are foundation programs or pathway courses. Very few undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs at UK universities take a 5.5 as a direct entry score.
-
How long is my IELTS score valid for UK admissions?
The IELTS score is valid for two years from the test date. This rule applies to both university admission and the visa. If you took the test in March 2024 and your visa application goes in April 2026, you are within the window but just barely. Plan your test date so the score stays valid through the entire application and visa process.
-
Can I study at a UK university without IELTS after studying in an English-medium school in India?
Possibly. Students from CBSE, ICSE, ISC, or Cambridge schools can apply for an MOI waiver at many mid-ranked UK universities. Most Russell Group institutions do not offer this option to Indian applicants. Always check the English language exemption section on the specific university’s admissions page before assuming it applies.
-
What happens if I book standard IELTS instead of IELTS UKVI for my UK student visa?
Standard IELTS Academic is not on the list, so your visa application cannot proceed with this option. The Home Office only accepts SELT tests from the approved list. You will need to book the IELTS UKVI separately and pay the full fee again. This is one of the most common and expensive avoidable mistakes.
-
I missed my required IELTS score. What can I realistically do?
If you fell short in just one section by half a band, look at the One Skill Retake first. It costs around Rs.12,650, and you have 60 days from your original test to book it. If your overall score is just below the university requirement, check whether a pre-sessional English course is an option. For bigger gaps, a full resit is the more straightforward path. Before you assume your application is finished, call or email the admissions office, as some universities allow a short window for pending scores.
-
What IELTS score is required for a UK work visa (Skilled Worker)?
From January 8, 2026, new Skilled Worker visa applicants need CEFR B2, which is 5.5 in every section of an approved SELT test. This requirement increased from the previous B1 requirement. From this date, healthcare roles and care worker positions must also meet the same requirement.
-
Can Indian nursing graduates use OET instead of IELTS for UK registration?
Yes, for professional registration. The NMC accepts OET Grade B in all four components as an equivalent to IELTS 7.0 for nursing registration. The GMC accepts OET for doctor registration as well. However, OET is not a SELT; it cannot be used for your UK student visa application. If you need both a student visa and professional registration, you will need IELTS UKVI for the visa and can then use OET separately for NMC/GMC registration.
