What is IELTS TRF & ATRF?
The IELTS TRF (Test Report Form) is a document that contains the IELTS band score. It is required in various scenarios where proof of English proficiency is needed.
The major key areas where IELTS TRF reports are required are:
- Visa purposes: The immigration departments of various English-speaking countries require the IELTS TRF to check whether the applicant meets the minimum required language requirements.
- Universities and colleges: Many educational institutions have set a minimum language requirement for candidates. The universities will validate the candidates' eligibility using the TRF scores.
- Job opportunities: Many global companies require a minimum level of English proficiency to ensure that the job applicant can understand and communicate in the language desired by the employer.
The Test Report Form (TRF), which includes detailed test results and scores, remains valid for 2 years from the test date. This comprehensive document provides a complete record of your IELTS performance, including scores for each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
In specific cases, such as applications for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA), two TRFs may be issued to reflect specific test attempts or scores, providing clarity and transparency in the application process.
You can also request up to 5 TRFs from the relevant institutions listed in your application. It is also possible to send more than 5 TRFs to the colleges and universities you wish to apply to. This is called ATRFs (Additional Test Report Form).

IELTS Reference Number vs IELTS Test Report Form Number
There are two terms, namely the reference number and the TRF number, each with its own specific role.
The reference number is a unique number provided to each candidate who takes the IELTS exam. This reference number is used to check your exam performance.
Whereas the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) number is a unique number for each TRF that you request. The concerned institution uses this unique number to identify the authenticity of your TRF.
