How to Calculate IELTS Band Score:

While applying for universities in native-English speaking countries, it is necessary to send the IELTS scores as well. Here is a comprehensive overview of how to calculate IELTS scores before attaching them to college applications.

IELTS markings are based on a 9-mark scale for all four sections – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The scores will vary from 1 to 9, and a score can either be a whole or a half band. One scores a band for each section – reading, listening, writing and speaking. The overall IELTS score is based on the average score of the four sections.

Let us put forward an example for better understanding.

SectionScore
Listening6
Writing7
Reading5.5
Speaking6.5
IELTS overall band score6 + 7 + 6.5 + 7.5 = 27/4 = 6.75

When an IELTS overall band score ends with .75 or .25, it is rounded off to the nearest half or whole band. So, in the above example, the effective IELTS band score is 7.
