Knowing how it's scored is important before you start preparing for any part of the IELTS exam. Understanding the scoring helps you answer questions strategically, giving you a better chance of getting a high score.

IELTS Reading is scored on a band scale of 0-9, just as the other modules. But how does it work? Let’s find out. On this page, we will learn about the IELTS Reading band score in detail!

IELTS Academic Reading consists of passages sourced from textbooks, journals, magazines, articles and other academic materials.

The test lasts 60 minutes, and you get 3 passages and 40 questions to answer.

It is a hassle-free process to calculate IELTS reading score, as no band descriptors are involved.

It works like this:

  • You have 40 questions to answer
  • Each correct answer is worth 1 mark
  • The right answers are summed together to get a final score called the ‘raw score’
  • Your raw score is converted to the IELTS Reading band score by using the score chart.
