Managing Dissertation Work: PTE Summarize Group Discussion Question with Sample Answers - Page 3

Your task

You will hear a group discussion. After listening, please summarize the discussion in your own words.

“Speaker 1: This dissertation is turning out to be more difficult than I imagined. I thought choosing a topic would be the hard part, but honestly, the actual research and writing part is overwhelming. Speaker 2: I totally get you. I spent two weeks just trying to narrow down my research question. Then I realized that finding academic sources is not as straightforward as just Googling something. I’m not even sure if I’m using the right databases. Speaker 3: Same here. I didn’t know how to differentiate between peer-reviewed articles and general articles at first. And every time I think I’m on the right track, my supervisor gives feedback that sends me back to the drawing board. Speaker 1: Yeah, and there’s this pressure to contribute something original. But how are we supposed to come up with something new when we’re still learning how to write a proper academic paper? Speaker 2: That’s been bothering me too. I finally booked a session with the library research assistant. They showed me how to use filters in academic databases and how to avoid outdated sources. Speaker 3: That’s a good idea. I’ve been relying on random websites. Maybe that’s why my literature review doesn’t feel strong. I think we need more support on how to structure arguments and write critically. Speaker 1: Agreed. I also realized that referencing is half the battle. One wrong citation style and you lose marks. It’s so time-consuming. Speaker 2: Honestly, I’ve started using citation tools like Zotero. It saves time, but you still have to double-check the format. Speaker 3: I think the key is to start early, get regular feedback, and not be afraid to ask for help. This is one of the biggest academic tasks we’ve faced, so it makes sense that it takes time to get it right.”
