IELTS Cue Cards on Travel

What is the Travel Category?

Travelling is one of the most exciting and common topics in the IELTS Speaking test, and cue cards related to travel often appear in part 2. You may be asked to describe a memorable trip, a place you visited, or a travel experience that influenced you.

The travel cue card assesses your ability to narrate events, express opinions, and use descriptive language effectively.

FAQs

Q.  How can I effectively describe a place I've never visited?

Ans. If you haven’t visited a place, you can still describe it by using:

  • Information from travel blogs, documentaries, or books.
  • Imagination and descriptive vocabulary to paint a vivid picture.
  • Comparisons with similar places you’ve seen in movies or online.
For example: "Although I haven’t been to Paris, I imagine the Eiffel Tower to be a breathtaking sight, especially when it’s illuminated at night."
Q.  What if I forget details while speaking?

Ans. If you forget details while speaking in the IELTS Speaking test, don’t panic.

  • Stay calm and focus on general aspects like location, activities, and culture.
  • Use phrases like "I can’t recall the exact name, but it was a beautiful coastal town..."
  • Shift focus to personal opinions or emotions instead of factual details.
Q.  Is it okay to talk about a negative travel experience?

Ans. Yes, but ensure you conclude on a positive note. For example: "Although my flight was delayed and I lost my luggage, the locals were so helpful that it turned into a memorable adventure."

Q.  How long should my response be?

Ans. Aim for 1.5 to 2 minutes. Structure your answer well to ensure you don’t run out of points too soon or speak too briefly.

Q.  Can I talk about a dream destination instead of a past travel experience?

Ans. Yes! If the prompt allows, you can describe a place you wish to visit instead of one you've been to. Just make it sound realistic by using details about the location.
