Model Answer
With globalization, education has become very competitive with educational institutions and companies selecting only the best around the world. This has fuelled a need to be a high performer with the foundation being laid as early as kindergarten. With this reasoning, extracurriculars have taken a backseat and only thought of as a checkbox. Hence, this essay will highlight why I disagree with the statement of extracurriculars being a distraction and focus on why they are a necessity. To start off, it is scientifically proven that physical and artistic undertakings like football, basketball, drama, music and the like stimulate the brain producing "happy hormones" that help regulate emotions, make one feel good and build positive self-image thereby boosting confidence. This is due to the fact that doing all this makes a person happy and regulating these emotions help in overall brain development. In China for instance, physical education is a part of the curriculum and mandated to at least an hour daily aimed to promote both physical and mental wellbeing. Furthermore, it is justified that extracurriculars if one possesses the talent can be further developed as a career through parental guidance and right resources. This means that children who may be not be strong academically do have an alternate career option that they would continue to enjoy. To illustrate this idea, we can take the example of David Beckham. His father introduced him to football at the age of 4 and today he is regarded as one of football's legends. It is thus shown that, with consistent practice and guidance one's extracurriculars may become a source of livelihood. In summary, after analyzing the facts, it is undoubtedly evident that extracurriculars are a necessary part of academics that cannot be ignored.
