Model Answer
When recruiting new staff, company often face the dilemma of choosing between a candidate's academic qualification and their personality and ability to work with others. While formal education provides a strong foundation of knowledge, I believe that personality and inter personal skills are more important for long term success in most workplaces. Academic qualifications demonstrate that a candidate has the technical knowledge and discipline require for a role. For professions such as medicine, engineering, or law, a solid educational background is essential to ensure competence and safety. Degrees and certifications also help employers quickly filter candidates in the job market. However, academic success alone does not guarantee effective performance in the real working environment. In contrast, personality traits such as communication skills, adaptability, teamwork, and emotional intelligence play a crucial role in daily professional life. Most modern organizations rely on collaboration, where employees must work in teams, manage conflicts, and interact with clients. A highly qualified individual who cannot cooperate with colleagues or accept feedback may disrupt team harmony and reduce overall productivity. For example, in customer service, employees with positive attitudes and strong inter-personal skills often contribute more to organizational success than with those with superior academic records but poor social skills. Moreover, technical skills can often be taught on the job, whereas personality and attitude are much harder to change. Companies increasingly invest in training programs, but they prefer employees who are willing to learn and can fit into the organizational culture. In conclusion, although academic qualifications are important, especially for specialized roles, a candidate's personality and ability to work well with others should be given greater priority. These qualities ensure smoother teamwork, better workplace relationships, and sustainable success for both the employee and the employer.
