IELTS, or International English Language Testing System, is a popular English language proficiency test students write to pursue an international degree. IELTS is accepted in almost all universities and colleges in the UK, U.S., Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. 

IDP Education conducts IELTS exams in India. Candidates can sit for the IELTS Academic and General Tests any time throughout the year. Even though the IELTS exam can be given throughout the year, selecting your dates in advance is always advisable. Students can opt for the paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS exam.

IELTS Test Dates 2023

IELTS exams are conducted in two different modes: computer-delivered tests and paper-based tests. While computer-delivered tests are available thrice a day for 7 days a week, the paper-based test is available up to 4 times a month. The dates of the paper-based IELTS test will depend on the type of test (Academic or General Training) one appears for.

IELTS tests usually take place on Thursdays and Saturdays or Fridays and Sundays. While the Reading, Writing, and Listening tests take place on the test date, the Speaking test usually takes place 7 days before or after .

Steps to Register for IELTS Exam

As stated earlier, candidates can appear for their IELTS test on any date available in a year. Although one can opt to choose a date at their convenience, it is advised to register in advance to get the most preferred dates. 

Students can appear for the IELTS test as many times as they wish. However, they must register each time with a fee of 15,500.

One can register for IELTS exams either online or through an in-person process.

Online Registration

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you register for the IELTS test using the online process:

  • Visit the official website of IELTS IDP India official website (​​https://www.ieltsidpindia.com/) and choose the ‘Register for IELTS’ option.
  • Select the preferred test – computer-delivered IELTS/ paper-based (IELTS, IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills). 
  • Select your test type/module – Academic or General Training for IELTS, IELTS for UKVI, A1 and B1 for Life Skills (be extremely careful while choosing the module you wish to take).
  • Choose the nearest test centre location, exam date and time slot according to your preference and convenience.
  • Provide personal and academic details on the required application page. 
  • Review the entered details before proceeding with payments. 
  • Pay the registration fee and print the acknowledgement slip for future reference. The payment can be made either through a credit card or debit card. 

How to Reschedule/Transfer IELTS Exam?

To reschedule or transfer your IELTS test to another location follow these steps:

  • Log in to your account on the IELTS IDP India website. You can reschedule your IELTS test only if the test date is at least 15 days from the date you are applying for transfer. For 34 days or more, you can reschedule without stating any reason.
  • Select your reason for rescheduling/transfer. 
  • Upload relevant supporting documents such as a medical certificate, death/cremation certificate or letter from a doctor, police FIR, and passport renewal receipt or receipt from the immigration department
  • Once submitted, check for the acknowledgement. 
  • Your new date will be confirmed within 3 days. If your request is not accepted you will be informed via email and SMS.
  • Once your request is verified, you will be able to select the new date and location.

Things to Keep in Mind While Registering for IELTS

IELTS registration is one of the most crucial steps that must be done accurately. Any error in the registration process can potentially lead to the cancellation of the online application. 

Here are some important points that students need to remember while registering for IELTS tests:

  • Make sure to have a valid passport. It is compulsory to upload a scanned copy of the passport while registering for IELTS tests. Moreover, students need to display their passports to gain access to the test centres on the days of the IELTS exam.
  • One should provide authentic and correct information while filling up an online application form. Any discrepancy in provided information can lead to complications in the future.
  •  It is recommended to register for IELTS tests at least three months beforehand. This will enable students to get the desired dates and time slots.
  •  Students have to pay a registration fee of ₹15,500 at the time of the online form application. For online registration, candidates must pay the fees through net banking, debit card or credit card payments.

Test Cancellation and Refund Policy

If a candidate cannot sit for the IELTS test on the assigned exam date, s/he has the option to cancel the test. A candidate can apply for cancellation only if the test date is at least 15 days from the date on which you are applying for cancellation. 

If the test date is between 15-34 days or in case of payment through offline channels, the candidate can only make a request for cancellation by providing supporting documents and cancellation will be done once the request is approved.

After cancellation is approved, the refund will be processed within 8-10 business days after deducting administrative charges

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have a medical emergency on the day of the IELTS exam?

In case you cannot attend the IELTS Exam due to a medical emergency, you must provide a medical certificate 5 days before your test date to receive a refund (excluding the administrative cost). You will lose the refund if you do not attend the exam without prior notice.

What if I’m late on the IELTS test day due to unavoidable reasons?

Please inform the testing facility immediately if you are going to be late on test day. The testing centre can suggest the next available slot for the test.

How many times can I appear for the IELTS exam?

There are no caps on attempts for the IELTS exam. Up to 48 test dates are available each year. You can write the test as many times as you want. However, remember that you will have to pay the fees each time you want to appear for IELTS.

Do I have to appear for all the IELTS tests on the same day?

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are on the same day. In some test centres, the Speaking test is either held on the same day, or within seven days before or after the Listening, Reading, Writing test date.

When will the IELTS exams start in 2023?

The IELTS exam for 2023 will start on January 7 for both Academic and General Training. Book your date in advance to get your preferred date and time slot.
