Leap Scholar Review: Everyone Warned Me This Would Be Stressful. It Wasn't.

I worked at Rockstar Games for over a year before deciding a masters in Germany was the right next move. Here's my Leap Scholar review, in my own words, on why the process people kept warning me about turned out to be the most manageable part of this entire journey.

Q1. Tell me a bit about yourself.

My name is Shubh Bisht, and I did my engineering at an Institute of Technology, specializing in computer science with gaming. I'll be doing my masters in Germany. I'm from Pune, and I'm hoping to do well there.

Q2. When did you start thinking about studying abroad?

Honestly, I thought about going abroad as far back as childhood, but I wasn't serious about it back then. It became real once I actually chose my career path during my B.It was during my time in tech that I realized I needed a finer, more advanced skill set. The US and Canada offered the best options, but I was also drawn to Germany for its technological advancement. After graduation, I decided to gain some experience first and then pursue my masters, and that's really when I got serious about the whole plan.

Q3. What course did you choose?

I'm doing an MSc in Game Technology at HBRS, Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, in Germany.

Q4. How important do you think choosing the right degree is, especially for a course as specific as yours?

Honestly, many people confuse the best course with the best university, but those aren't the same thing at all. Some courses only exist at specific universities, not necessarily the most famous ones. I genuinely believe it's more important to choose the best course for yourself rather than chasing a university's reputation, since the top-ranked universities don't necessarily offer the exact course you're looking for. A masters is a big decision, so intensive research really matters before you commit to a course.

Q5. Why Germany specifically, and was cost the main reason?

Cost is definitely attractive; that's true. But Germany also has a strong reputation for technological advancement, and honestly, it's easier to sustain life there afterward, especially if you're planning to apply for a post-study visa. That combination genuinely drew me in. Germany has a huge industry footprint in technology, automobiles, and simulation and graphics specifically, which lines up closely with my field.

Q6. How did you first hear about Leap Scholar?

I'd seen a lot of ads for them, and a few of my friends already studying abroad, in the UK and the US had mentioned them too. After a bit of my research, I found they're genuinely one of the best providers in India for both bachelor's and master's applications. So my discovery was really a mix of friends, family, and a little research of my own.

Q7. How was your university shortlisting process?

Genuinely easy; comfortable is honestly the better word. I didn't feel any real stress through it. A lot of people had warned me the whole process would be extremely stressful, but Leap Scholar helped with a large chunk of the documentation and legwork, so I never had to handle everything entirely on my own. That's exactly why the tension people warned me about never really showed up for me.

Q8. Is your university public, and did free education factor into your decision?

Yes, it's a public university. And absolutely, Germany's free or heavily subsidized education is a genuinely strong pull for any student. That definitely factored into my decision to choose Germany.

Q9. Can you walk me through the application process, given Germany's specific requirements?

Germany does ask for a bit more documentation than some other countries. I had to file for my APS certification well before I could even start applying to universities, since a lot of universities require it upfront. I'd say it's genuinely necessary to sort that out before anything else. Then there's the blocked account, which costs around €12,000 at minimum. Beyond that, applying for the visa was actually very simple. I was honestly nervous walking into VFS Global at the time, but it turned out to be straightforward, just making sure I had all my documents together, my APS certificate, passport, blocked account confirmation, and insurance. I expected it to be genuinely stressful, and it wasn't. That was a pleasant surprise.

Q10. Did you face any real challenges, and how did Leap Scholar help?

The one genuine challenge I'd point to is accommodation, and honestly, I'm still working through that even now. It's something everyone applying to Germany seems to run into, and it's really a post-admission concern rather than something tied to the application itself, so I don't think it counts against the application process specifically. Beyond that, I genuinely think it's a lot easier than people make it sound. You just need to follow the steps and not overthink it.

Absolutely. They were genuinely helpful and supportive throughout. My counselor specifically was incredibly patient with me, even when I asked what I'd call genuinely basic or, honestly, silly questions, since this experience was my first time navigating anything like this. Every single doubt got cleared without any hesitation on their part.

Q13. What was the most difficult part of the process for you?

In terms of pure stress, a visa, without question, just not knowing whether I'd actually get it. But the hardest part overall was honestly the waiting, waiting to hear back on my admission after applying to a few universities, genuinely tense about whether I'd get in, and then waiting again for the visa decision. It wasn't any specific task that was difficult; it was more the patience required that really got to my head.

Q14. What do you think was the strongest part of your application?

My portfolio and my experience were, without a doubt, the strongest parts of my application. I worked at Rockstar Games for over a year, one of the biggest names in gaming, and I had a genuinely strong portfolio focused on graphics. While work experience isn't strictly necessary for everyone applying to a masters, having it is a real plus point alongside a strong portfolio and SOP. I'd say those two, portfolio and SOP, are essentials, and experience adds real weight on top.

Q15. Would you recommend Leap Scholar to others?

Absolutely. Doing this process entirely on my own would have been genuinely stressful. I'd recommend Leap Scholar to anyone who wants to go through the process with more ease and less pressure. There's still going to be some stress, but it's genuinely easier with them doing the hard work. And honestly, if you're working alongside this process, I think Leap Scholar is close to essential, since you simply don't get the time to manage everything on your own while holding down a job.
