The UK's India Young Professionals Scheme Ballot Is Open Right Now: You Have 48 Hours

Today is July 21, 2026. The second and final ballot for the India Young Professionals Scheme (IYPS) opened at 1:30 PM IST today and closes at 1:30 PM IST on July 23. You have exactly 48 hours.

This is not a scholarship. This is not a graduate program. This is a real 24-month UK visa that lets you live, work, and study in the United Kingdom without needing a job offer or an employer sponsor before you arrive. No job offer required. No employer sponsor required. Just eligibility, a ballot entry, and the willingness to go.

If you are an Indian citizen between 18 and 30 years old with a bachelor's degree and approximately Rs. 3.29 lakh in savings (the GBP 2,530 requirement at 1 GBP = Rs. 130.20 on July 17, 2026), entering the ballot takes under 10 minutes and costs nothing.

What the India Young Professionals Scheme Is

The India Young Professionals Scheme is a reciprocal mobility arrangement between the UK and Indian governments, launched as part of the UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership signed in 2021. It is modeled on the UK's broader Youth Mobility Scheme, which offers similar arrangements to Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and several other countries.

Under the scheme, selected Indian citizens can:

• Live in the UK for up to 24 months.
• Work in the UK in most roles, including skilled and unskilled employment.
• Study in the UK (with an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate required for certain subjects).
• You can be self-employed or even set up a company, as long as you rent premises, keep equipment worth no more than GBP 5,000, and have no employees.
• Travel in and out of the UK freely while the visa remains valid.

The scheme allocates 3,000 places to Indian citizens each year through two ballots. The first ballot of 2026 ran from February 17 to 19, and then it filled the majority of those 3,000 places. The July ballot allocates the remaining places. This process means the pool is smaller and the window is shorter. This is the last opportunity to enter in 2026.

The Ballot: How It Works

What it is: The ballot is a random draw. Every eligible person who enters during the 48-hour window gets one entry. The draw is random. There is no ranking by grades, experience, or essays. You are either selected or you are not, and there is no appeal against an unsuccessful result.

What happens if you are selected: You receive an invitation by email within two weeks of the ballot closing (by approximately August 6, 2026). You then have 90 days from the invitation date to submit your actual visa application, pay the visa fee, and give biometrics at a visa application center.

What happens if you are not selected: You can enter future ballots in subsequent years, provided you still meet the eligibility requirements at the time of the next ballot. You cannot re-enter the same ballot if you are not selected.

The one-entry rule: Only one ballot entry per person is permitted. Submitting duplicate entries will get your application disqualified. One entry, one chance.

What you need to enter the ballot:

• Your passport details.
• A scanned copy or photo of your passport.
• Your date of birth, phone number, and email address.

That is all. The ballot entry itself is free.

Eligibility: The Full Checklist

You can enter the ballot if all of the following apply:

• Nationality: You are an Indian citizen and hold a valid Indian passport.
• Age: You are between 18 and 30 years old at the time you apply for the visa (not just at the ballot entry stage). Your age is assessed at the point of the visa application, not the ballot entry.
• Education: You hold a bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized institution.
• Savings: You have at least GBP 2,530 (approximately Rs. 3.29 lakh) in your personal bank account. This must be funds you have held for at least 28 consecutive days before your visa application date.
• Children: You do not have children under 18 who live with you or are financially dependent on you.
• Previous use: You have not previously been granted leave under the India Young Professionals Scheme or any UK Youth Mobility Scheme.
• Current status: You are not in the UK on a visa that prohibits you from switching to this route.

The Costs If You Are Selected

Entering the ballot is free. If selected, the costs are:

Note: TB test (approximately GBP 65–100) and SELT English test (approximately GBP 150–200, if required) are paid separately and are not included in the GBP 1,892 total. 

The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you access to NHS services in the UK for the duration of your visa. It is calculated at GBP 776 per year (GBP 1,552 for the full 24 months) and is compulsory.

The GBP 2,530 in savings is separate. It is proof of funds to support yourself on arrival, not a fee. You do not pay it to anyone.

What You Can and Cannot Do on This Visa

You can:

• Work for any UK employer in most roles without needing a sponsor.
• Switch employers freely without notifying the Home Office.
• Study, including university courses, requires an ATAS certificate for certain scientific and engineering subjects.
• Be self-employed as a freelancer or contractor.
• Set up a company, provided you rent your premises, your equipment is worth no more than GBP 5,000, and you have no employees.
• Travel in and out of the UK freely during the 24-month period.
• Access NHS services for the duration of your visa.

You cannot:

• Extend this visa. The 24 months is the maximum, and it cannot be extended under this scheme.
• Bring dependents. Your partner and children cannot join you on this visa.
• Access public funds (benefits, social housing).
• You can switch to this visa from inside the UK if you are already in the UK on another visa.

Time toward ILR: Time spent on the IYPS does not count toward the 5-year qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain. If you want to stay in the UK beyond 24 months, you must switch to another visa category, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, before your IYPS visa expires.

How This Differs from the Graduate Route

Many Indian students already know about the Graduate Route (the post-study work visa that UK degree graduates access after completing their degree). The IYPS is different in three important ways.

No UK degree required: The Graduate Route requires completing a UK degree. The IYPS requires only that you have any bachelor's degree from any country, including India.

No previous UK study required: You do not need to have studied in the UK at any point to apply for the IYPS.

It is allocated by ballot, not by automatic entitlement: Every UK graduate automatically qualifies for the Graduate Route after completing their degree (subject to meeting the requirements). The IYPS is a random draw; qualifying does not guarantee selection.

The Reciprocal Arrangement: What It Means

The scheme is reciprocal. British citizens between 18 and 30 can apply to live and work in India under a parallel arrangement. Crucially, the Indian version does not use a ballot; British nationals can apply throughout the year without a random draw.

This asymmetry reflects the significant difference in demand: far more young Indians want to live and work in the UK than young British nationals want to live and work in India, which is why the UK uses a capped, ballot-based allocation system rather than year-round open applications.

What to Do Right Now

Step 1: Check your eligibility. Run through the checklist above. Every condition must be met. If any single one does not apply, you cannot enter the ballot.

Step 2: Enter the ballot at gov.uk. Go to the official website and enter the ballot before 1:30 PM IST on July 23, 2026. You will need your passport details and a photo or scan of it. The process takes under 10 minutes.

Step 3: Wait for results. Results arrive by email within approximately two weeks of the ballot closing, by approximately August 6, 2026.

Step 4: If selected, prepare your documents. You have 90 days from your invitation date to submit the full visa application. Documents you will need include your passport, degree certificate, bank statements showing GBP 2,530 held for at least 28 consecutive days, and biometrics.

If you are not selected: The next ballots will run in February and July 2027. The February 2027 ballot is expected to open in February 2027 and will allocate the majority of the 2027 places. Begin preparing now so you are ready to enter the moment the next ballot opens.
