Germany Has Introduced a New Mandatory Exam for Indian Master's Applicants. Here Is Everything You Need to Know About the dMAT.
On June 29, 2026, APS India officially announced the Digital Master Test (dMAT), a new standardized aptitude exam that is now part of the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verification process for Indian students applying to master's programs in Germany. Registration opened the same day. The first exam will be held on September 26, 2026.
If you are an Indian student planning to pursue a master's degree in Germany in engineering, computer science, IT, commerce, finance, economics, or management, this exam now directly affects your application and your visa process.
What is the dMAT?
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is developed by universities in collaboration with GAST, the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung, the same body behind TestDaF and TestAS. The dMAT is also supported by the DAAD, Germany's largest academic exchange service.
Unlike traditional entrance examinations, the dMAT does not test memorized facts or university syllabi. It evaluates whether students can analyze information and solve academic problems.
It is not an entrance exam for German universities. It does not replace APS document verification. It is an additional document that helps German universities understand an applicant's academic aptitude.
Submitting a dMAT scorecard is now mandatory for APS certification for applicable master's applicants. APS certification is a prerequisite for obtaining a German student visa. Without a dMAT score, your application pipeline can stall before it even begins.
Who Must Take the dMAT?
In its first phase, the dMAT is required if your bachelor's is in engineering (including computer science and IT), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business, or management, and you are applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.
You are exempt from the dMAT if:
- You completed your APS online registration before June 29, 2026.
- You shipped your complete APS application documents before June 29, 2026.
- You have already received your APS certificate.
- You are applying through an officially confirmed exchange program, double-degree program, or university partnership program.
- You are a bachelor's or PhD applicant. The dMAT applies to master's applicants only.
- Your undergraduate degree is in a field outside the three affected streams: engineering and CS, commerce and business, or economics and finance.
The first dMAT certificates will be available from October 12, 2026. The dMAT is, therefore, intended for applications in connection with the Summer Semester 2027 master's intake and subsequent intakes.
Students applying for Winter Semester 2026/27 are not affected.

The Exam Structure: What You Are Tested On
The dMAT consists of two modules: a core module and a subject module. The core module measures general study aptitude and consists of three subtests testing general cognitive skills. The subject modules measure subject-specific aptitude, testing subject knowledge acquired during previous studies and the ability to apply it.
The dMAT requires specialized knowledge and application skills, not purely memorized factual knowledge. The duration of the examination is three and a half hours with a break between the examination modules.
For the APS process in India specifically: For most Indian master's applicants going through APS India, the required module is the General Academic Module, which tests general academic aptitude rather than subject-specific knowledge. Subject-specific modules in chemistry, physics, computer science, and electrical engineering are currently required only for specific programs, such as the MSc Battery Science and Technology at RWTH Aachen.
What the modules test:
Core Module: General Cognitive Skills:
- Logical and analytical reasoning.
- Pattern recognition and problem-solving.
- Academic comprehension and inference.
General Academic Module:
- Applying reasoning to typical academic situations.
- Interpreting information and drawing conclusions.
- Understanding academic problem structures.
Questions are single-choice. You pick one answer from the options. There are no open-ended or essay-style questions.
How the dMAT Score Works
The certificate shows your results on two scales: the percentile rank and the dMAT score.
The percentile rank indicates what percentage of other participants received a lower or equally good result. A percentile rank of 70 means 70% of all participants got a lower score or the same score, while 30% achieved higher.
The dMAT score is a conversion of the total number of correct answers to a value between 0 and 200. The mean (average) is 100.
Important: A low dMAT score does not block your APS certificate. APS India has confirmed that the dMAT does not replace document verification, and a low score will not prevent your APS certification. The score is shown on your APS certificate for universities to consider independently when making their own admission decisions.
Universities decide individually how to use the dMAT results. The certificate is valid indefinitely. You take it once, and that score can be used for all future German university applications.
How German Universities Are Using dMAT Scores
Different universities weight the dMAT differently. Some use it as a supporting document. Others have made it the primary selection criterion.
RWTH Aachen's Master's in Battery Science and Technology bases 80% of its admission decision on the dMAT, leaving only 20% for the bachelor's CGPA. That is a dramatic inversion of how most Indian students expect admissions to work.
A strong score also provides access to elite, competitive degrees such as the Master's in Applied Data Science at Georg-August University Göttingen.
Currently, RWTH Aachen University and Georg-August University Göttingen are the two German institutions officially using the dMAT as a selection criterion. More universities are expected to incorporate it as the exam becomes established.
Exam Fee
The dMAT fee is €150, paid to G.A.S.T. when you register. At 1 EUR = Rs. 108.00 (July 1, 2026, BookMyForex), that is approximately Rs. 16,235. This sits on top of the usual APS verification fee.
Where You Can Take the Exam in India
The test runs at G.A.S.T. centers in ten Indian cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune.
You select your preferred test center when you register through the G.A.S.T. portal. Seats fill quickly; register well before the September 15, 2026, registration deadline.
How to Register
Registration is completely online and managed by G.A.S.T., not by APS India.

What This Means for the APS Process
The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is the Academic Evaluation Centre that verifies the educational documents of Indian students before they can apply for a German student visa. Without an APS certificate, you cannot get a German student visa.
The dMAT is now embedded into this process. Applicants who completed their APS online registration on or after June 29, 2026, and are subject to the dMAT requirement may submit their APS application documents first, then submit the dMAT certificate later once it becomes available. APS India can only complete the APS procedure after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted.
In practical terms: apply to APS now if you are ready. Do not wait for your dMAT results to begin the APS process. But APS will not finalize your certificate until the dMAT certificate is also submitted.
How to Prepare for the dMAT
Since the dMAT tests general analytical ability and reasoning rather than subject-specific memorization, traditional exam prep strategies do not apply in the usual way.
What helps:
- Practice logical reasoning and data interpretation questions, similar to GMAT verbal and reasoning sections.
- Work through analytical and critical thinking exercises.
- Review sample questions available on d-mat.de before registering.
- Take mock aptitude tests regularly in the weeks before September 26.
- Focus on how you think through a problem, not what you have memorized.
What does not help:
- Memorising formulas or textbook content.
- Last-minute cramming the night before.
Why Germany Introduced the dMAT
Germany is one of the most popular master's destinations for Indian students, particularly in engineering, computer science, finance, and management. Nearly all public German universities charge near-zero tuition, making a German master's one of the most financially rational study abroad options available to Indian graduates. Read our comprehensive analysis on Why Germany’s Public Universities Are the Smartest Choice for Your Master’s Degree (2026–2027) to learn more about funding your education.
The dMAT introduction reflects a growing effort to standardize the evaluation of Indian applicants at a time when application volumes from India to German universities are rising sharply. It gives German universities a consistent, comparable metric for academic readiness across thousands of applicants whose undergraduate grades come from vastly different marking systems.
For Indian students, a strong dMAT score is not just a bureaucratic requirement. It is a way to stand out in a highly competitive applicant pool for some of Germany's most sought-after programs, while a lower score, though visible on the APS certificate, does not block your application from proceeding.
