Brunel University London British Council Women in STEM Scholarship 2026: Full Guide for Indian Students
Brunel University London, in partnership with the British Council, is offering five fully funded scholarships for women from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka under the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM 2026. Each scholarship is valued at a minimum of GBP 40,000 and covers tuition, living costs, flights, visa fees, and more. If you are a woman from India with a STEM background, this is worth your full attention.
Why This Scholarship Is Different From Most
Most scholarships place you in a competitive pool with thousands of other international students, leaving your chances of receiving the scholarship uncertain. This one does not work that way.
This scholarship is exclusively for women, and Brunel is looking for women with a background in STEM who can demonstrate their need for financial support and who wish to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in STEM.
Brunel is one of five participating UK universities, each offering five scholarships to South Asian applicants. Your competition is applicants from all five eligible countries for Brunel's five seats, specifically, not just Indian applicants.
What the Scholarship Actually Pays For
Each scholarship is valued at a minimum of GBP 40,000 (approximately Rs.49 lakh at current rates). The scholarship covers tuition fees, a monthly stipend for up to 12 months, return economy-class travel, the IELTS exam fee for scholars without a valid English test, visa costs, insurance, the NHS surcharge, and a child allowance where applicable.
Here is what each of those means in plain terms:
- Tuition fees: The entire one-year postgraduate course is paid for. Nothing owed.
- Monthly stipend: A living allowance paid every month to cover accommodation, food, and daily expenses in London.
- Return flights: Economy-class travel from India to the UK and back home when the course ends.
- IELTS fee: If you do not yet have a valid English test score, the exam cost is reimbursed.
- Visa and NHS surcharge: Both are covered. These two costs alone can add up to over Rs.1.5 lakh for Indian students and are often forgotten when families budget for UK study.
- Child allowance: Additional support for scholars who are mothers, where applicable.
(Currency note: GBP 1 = Rs.123, as of April 9, 2026.)
Most UK scholarships cover tuition and nothing else. This one covers the full journey from India to London and back. That is what genuinely fully funded looks like.
Which Courses Qualify
The scholarship is only available for ten specific one-year full-time MSc programs at Brunel starting September 2026. If your course is not on this list, you are not eligible for this particular award.
The eligible courses are:
- MSc Structural Engineering
- MSc Advanced Electronic and Electrical Engineering
- MSc Artificial Intelligence
- MSc Integrated Product Design
- MSc Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design
- MSc Public Health and Health Promotion
- MSc Cancer Research
- MSc Infection and Antimicrobial Discovery
- MSc Physical Activity and Exercise for Health
- MSc Advanced Professional Practice with specialization options in Cardiovascular Health, Critical Care, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Neurorehabilitation, or Pelvic Health
Engineering, AI, design, public health, cancer research, antimicrobial science. If your undergraduate background connects to any of these areas, this scholarship is worth your full attention right now.
The Eligibility Checklist: Confirm This Before You Apply
Read every single point below before you begin your application. Missing even one condition means your application will not be considered.
You must be:
- A woman as defined under UK legislation, confirmed by passport or official documentation
- A permanent resident of and hold a valid passport from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka
- Applying for one of the ten eligible MSc courses starting September 2026
- In receipt of an Academic Unconditional Firm offer on one of the above courses by May 30, 2026
- Assessed by Brunel as an international student for tuition fee purposes
You must also:
- Demonstrate genuine financial need. Applicants must not be able to privately fund their UK studies and must not be receiving financial support from any other source that duplicates the core benefits of this scholarship
- Have an undergraduate degree strong enough to gain entry to your chosen MSc
- Meet the English language requirements for your course
- Be active in STEM through work experience or demonstrated interest in your subject area
You must commit to:
- Returning to your country of citizenship or residence for a minimum of two years after the scholarship ends, except in exceptional circumstances where return would be impossible or unsafe
- Acting as an ambassador for the UK and engaging with British Council and Brunel alumni activities
- Demonstrating a plan and a passion to engage other women and girls in STEM from your home country
That last point is not a formality. It is one of the most important parts of your application. The British Council is investing in women who will go back to India and use what they have learned to open doors for other women. A vague intention will not stand out. A specific, believable plan will.
Who Cannot Apply
The following applicants are not eligible:
- Applicants who hold dual citizenship
- Applicants not starting their course in September 2026
- Undergraduate applicants at any level
- Applicants applying for part-time, distance learning, or online versions of the listed courses
- Employees, former employees, or relatives of employees of UK government departments, including British Embassies and High Commissions
- Employees, former employees, or relatives of British Council employees
- Applicants currently receiving any financial support for a UK study programme from any other source
- Applicants who have previously studied in the UK with a UK Government or institutional scholarship
If you currently hold funding from another source or have previously received a UK government scholarship, this award is not available to you.
Note: For the full list of ineligible government departments, check the official scholarship page.
What a Strong Application Actually Looks Like
Five scholarships. Five countries. Hundreds of applicants. Your application needs to be clear, specific, and honest from the first line.
Here is what the selection panel is genuinely looking for:
- Academic strength. A degree strong enough to secure admission to one of the eligible MSc programs. This signals you will make the most of the opportunity.
- Real financial need. This is not a general statement about expenses being high. Actual evidence that self-funding postgraduate study in the UK is not possible for you without this scholarship.
- Limited prior international exposure. Preference will be given to candidates who have not had significant international exposure or previously studied in the UK. "Significant experience" is defined as a period of study over one month or enrollment in an international degree course. Short-term visits such as study tours or conferences are permitted. If you have not spent extended time studying abroad, that actually works in your favor here.
- A credible plan to give back. Not a sentence about inspiring women. A real, specific answer about what you plan to do in India after you graduate. Which communities? Which platforms? What actions? The candidates who win this scholarship are the ones who can answer this question with conviction and detail.
The Dates You Cannot Afford to Miss
Step | Date |
| Scholarship application deadline | 30 April 2026 at 12am UK time (midnight at the end of April 30 / start of May 1) |
| Unconditional Firm offer required by | 30 May 2026 |
| Results notified by | 12 June 2026 |
| Course start | September 2026 |
Late applicants cannot be accepted. There are no extensions. Missing the April 30 deadline by a single day means your application will not be reviewed regardless of how strong your profile is.
How to Apply
Step 1: Apply for your chosen MSc program through UCAS or via the Brunel online application portal at evision.brunel.ac.uk.
Step 2: Complete the scholarship application form separately at forms.office.com, where you will be required to explain why you are a suitable recipient.
Both steps are required. Applying for your course alone does not enter you into scholarship consideration. The scholarship form must be completed and submitted before April 30, 2026.

Why This Scholarship Matters Beyond the Money
With nearly 7,000 international students from over 153 countries, Brunel is the UK's 3rd most international university and 8th most international in the world, according to Times Higher Education 2026.
But more than the university, this scholarship matters because the problem it addresses is real. Women remain deeply underrepresented in STEM careers across South Asia. A fully funded Master's degree in the UK, at zero cost to the student, removes the biggest barrier between a talented woman and a career that could change her field, her community, and the people who come after her.
Five scholarships for five countries. For the one or two women from India who win, it removes every financial barrier between them and a career in STEM.
