DMAT Sample Questions 2026: Pattern, Practice Sets & Mock Tests for Indian Students

DMAT (Digital Master Test) is a new academic aptitude test that g.a.s.t., the German body behind TestDaF and TestAS, has added to the APS verification process for India. If your bachelor’s is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business, or management, and you’re applying for a German master’s from Summer 2027 onward, you’ll likely need it.

DMAT sample questions are not the same as subject questions. There is no chapter list from your degree available for revision. The test checks how fast and accurately you reason, not what you memorized in college.

Counselor insight: Most students spend their first week hunting for a syllabus PDF that doesn't exist. Skip that. Instead, spend the week on timed practice.

The exam lasts about 3.5 hours in total, is computer-based, is in English, and consists of single-choice questions throughout: a 90-minute Core Module, a 30-minute break, and then the module used for scoring your APS application.

That works out to roughly 75 seconds per item across the Core Module, so speed matters as much as accuracy. Two rules from the official instructions change how you should practice: no calculator or scratch paper is allowed at any point, and if you don't know an answer, guess rather than leave it blank, since there's no penalty for a wrong answer.

Results come back on a 0 to 200 normalized scale, with 100 as the global average, not an Indian-only average. Every genuine practice set should reflect this same two-module structure. You also receive a percentile rank. There's no pass mark: the DMAT doesn't replace APS document verification, and a weak score doesn't block your APS certificate. Universities decide independently how much weight to assign it, so check your target university's stance during your Germany intake planning.

Counselor insight: Treat 100 as a floor, not a target. Aim higher if you're applying to a program that actively encourages a strong score, such as some data science tracks.

1. Figure sequence reasoning (20 items, 25 minutes) Shapes change position, colour or orientation by a hidden rule across a series of frames; you pick what the next two frames look like from the given options. Rules can rotate, shift, resize, or recolour a shape and can also accelerate (a shape that moves one step between frames 1 and 2 moves two steps between frames 2 and 3).

Worked example (easy): A triangle rotates 90° clockwise in each frame and gains one extra dot. Frame 1 shows a triangle pointing up with one dot; frame 2 shows it pointing right with two dots; frame 3 shows it pointing down with three dots. The answer for frame 4 is a triangle pointing left with four dots, since the two rules (rotation + dot count) apply together.

Worked example (harder): A square shifts one cell to the right each frame while its shading alternates between black and white. In frame 4, it has moved three cells from its starting position and should be white. Work through one rule at a time (position, then colour) rather than both together, and check each option against both rules before picking one.

2. Simultaneous equations, solved mentally (20 items, 25 minutes): A small system of equations with letters representing whole numbers between 1 and 20, where you determine the value of one letter without using a calculator or scratch paper. Every system has exactly one valid solution, so there's always a way in if you find the most constrained equation first.

Worked example (easy): If x + y = 12 and x − y = 4, what is x? Add the two equations: 2x = 16, so x = 8.

Worked example (harder): If A = 2B, B + C = 9, and A − C = 3, what is C? Substitute A = 2B into the third equation to get 2B − C = 3. Combine with B + C = 9: adding the two gives 3B = 12, so B = 4 and C = 9 − 4 = 5. The skill being tested is mental substitution under time pressure, not advanced algebra.

3. Latin square logic (16 items, 20 minutes) A 5x5 grid partly filled with the letters A to E; each letter appears exactly once in every row and column, like a lettered Sudoku. One cell is marked with a question mark, and you should pick the correct letter from the options. Indian test-takers usually consider this the least familiar type, since it has no direct equivalent in CAT, GATE, or board exams.

Worked example: In the question mark's row, letters A, B, D and E already appear, so the missing letter must be C. Where a row or column alone doesn't rule out enough options, check the other axis too: if the question mark's column already contains C, that confirms it, since C can only sit in one place that satisfies both the row and the column. Since no notes are allowed, hold one derived answer in your head at a time rather than trying to map the whole grid before answering.

4. General Academic Module scenario questions You read a short academic passage, then answer several linked questions on inference and application. This is why DMAT sample questions can't simply be copied from a generic aptitude bank; the questions depend on the scenario given.

Counselor insight: Students who treat all four sections the same way run out of time. Figure sequences and Latin squares reward speed; the General Academic Module rewards careful reading. Practice all three Core subtests without a pen in hand, exactly as the real exam requires, so exam-day conditions don't feel like a handicap.

The DMAT launched in India only with the 2026 cycle, so there's no first, second, or third batch of past papers to draw from. Any site selling a "DMAT previous year question paper" collection predating 2026 isn't describing the real exam.

Use the official preparatory material on the g.a.s.t. and d-mat.de portals instead; it's the only DMAT sample questions set confirmed to match the real format. Beyond that, the best DMAT practice test substitutes are TestAS sample papers, GRE analytical reasoning practice questions, and GMAT sample papers, because all three focus on similar timed pattern recognition.

Should You Even Take the DMAT?

Before you spend an hour on DMAT sample questions, check whether the exam even applies to you.

If you're a final-year BTech student graduating in 2026, targeting Summer 2027 in Germany: the DMAT applies if your degree is in engineering (including Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical, Civil or Electronics as B.Tech branches), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business, or management. Start practicing now, alongside your APS document collection.

If you already registered for APS online or received your APS certificate before 29 June 2026: you're exempt, regardless of degree field. Put that time into your SOP and shortlist instead.

If you hold a standalone BCA, B.Sc. Data Science, IT, Pharmacy, Architecture, or Law degree, or you're on an official exchange or double-degree program, you fall outside the affected fields for now. Confirm against the official APS India field list before making any assumptions; the exact certificate title determines the outcome, not the course nickname.

No large official DMAT mock test bank exists yet, so the most useful one is the one you build yourself, matched exactly to the real exam's timing.

• Set three separate timers using the real split: 25 minutes for 20 figure-sequence-style questions, 25 minutes for 20 equation-style questions, and 20 minutes for 16 Latin-square-style questions.
• Pull questions from the official g.a.s.t. low, medium, and high difficulty sets first, then top up with TestAS, GRE analytical, or GMAT sample questions once you've worked through the official material.
• Sit for the mock test under real conditions: no calculator, no scratch paper, no pausing the timer.
• If you don't know the answer as time runs out, make a guess before moving on. Unanswered items count the same as wrong ones, so a blank is always the worse choice.
• Take a genuine 30-minute break between your Core Module mock and any General Academic Module practice, matching the real exam's structure.
• Review every wrong answer afterward and note which subtest slowed you down the most, then weight next week's practice toward that subtest.

Counselor insight: A DMAT mock test only helps if the timing is real. Students who practice questions untimed and then meet the actual 75-seconds-per-item pace on exam day lose more marks to pacing than to the questions themselves.

• Weeks 1–2: Baseline yourself with TestAS sample papers, GRE analytical questions, or GMAT logical reasoning sets, since large-volume official material isn't yet available. Note which subtest feels hardest.
• Weeks 3–4: Drill your weakest subtest daily in 15–20 minute timed bursts. Latin squares usually need the most repetition for Indian test-takers.
• Weeks 5–6: Run two or three full-length, timed mock attempts covering all sections back to back, so 3.5 hours stops feeling unfamiliar on exam day.

Counselor insight: Skip expensive coaching packages built around this exam. Since there's no pass/fail cut-off, it doesn't reward months of drilling the way a competitive entrance test would.

A low score: It doesn't fail your APS. APS India has confirmed the DMAT doesn't replace document verification, so your certificate still goes through. Put your energy into a strong SOP and a well-matched shortlist instead, since a retake hasn't been confirmed for this first cycle.

A missed registration window: You'll wait for the next sitting, which can push your Summer 2027 timeline back a semester. Since seats fill on a first-come, first-served basis, register the moment your degree field and intake confirm you need it.
