Quick Read
- The dMAT is a new aptitude test folded into APS documentation for Germany.
- It applies from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onward, not Winter 2026/27.
- A low dMAT score does not automatically get your APS certificate rejected.
- Registration closes 15 September 2026; the test is on 26 September 2026.
- Combined APS and dMAT fees total roughly Rs.34,515 for Indian students.
What Is APS dMAT and How It Fits Into Your Germany Application
APS India announced the new APS rules 2026 on 29 June 2026: a Digital Master Test (dMAT) now sits inside the APS documentation file for select Master’s applicants. Two separate organisations run this, and mixing them up is the single biggest source of confusion.

Does dMAT replace APS verification? No. This is the question every counselor hears first, and the official answer from APS India is direct: the dMAT certificate is an additional document inside your APS file. APS India still checks whether your marksheets and degree are genuine. g.a.s.t. still runs a separate three-and-a-half-hour aptitude test. Your aps certificate dmat file isn't complete until both pieces are in.

Who Needs the APS dMAT: Eligibility by Degree
The dMAT applies only if all of the following are true for you:
- You're applying for a Master's programme (not Bachelor's or PhD)
- Your intake is the summer semester of 2027 or later
- Your Bachelor's degree falls in one of the three affected fields below
- You started your APS process on or after 29 June 2026
- You're not on a confirmed exchange, double-degree, or partnership programme
Affected fields (per the official APS India list)
| Affected | Not automatically covered |
|---|---|
| Engineering (incl. Computer Science, IT engineering) | BCA, standalone IT, Data Science, AI/ML |
| Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics | Cyber Security |
| Business / Management | B.Sc. Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Architecture |
| Agriculture (unless Agricultural Engineering) |
Counselor insight: Your degree's official transcript wording decides this, not the course name. A "B.Tech in Computer Science and Business Systems" reads as engineering. A "BBA in Technology Management" often does not clear the bar for automatic inclusion. Sector-specific management degrees, think Hotel Management, Aviation Management, Healthcare Management, get individually assessed by APS India rather than auto-classified. If your transcript sits between two fields, email APS India for written clarification before you register and pay the โฌ150 fee.
Who is exempt from the APS dMAT
- Applicants for Bachelor's programmes
- Bachelor's students who haven't completed at least 5 semesters (3-year degree) or 7 semesters (4-year degree)
- PhD applicants
- Degrees outside the three affected fields
- Officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or partnership programme students
- Applicants who completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026
- Applicants who shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026
- Applicants who already hold an issued APS certificate for a completed procedure
- Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants (first dMAT certificates only arrive 12 October 2026)
Decision Framework: Which Situation are you in?
If you're a final-year BTech student graduating May 2027, targeting Summer Semester 2027 intake: You're squarely in scope. Register for the dMAT well before 15 September 2026, and start your APS documents in parallel; you don't need to wait for the dMAT certificate to begin.
If you're a BCom graduate who already shipped your APS documents in May 2026: You're exempt for this procedure, since your documents went in before the 29 June 2026 cutoff. Keep your courier receipt as proof if APS India asks.
If you're a BCA or Data Science graduate unsure whether you're covered: Check the official APS India affected-fields list (PDF) against your exact transcript wording before assuming either way. Don't register "just to be safe"; official guidance is clear that a voluntary dMAT attempt does nothing for your APS file if your field isn't listed. See what our counselors say on whether a BCA degree is acceptable for a Germany Master's if your own degree sits in this grey zone.
APS dMAT Combined Cost for Indian Students

| dMAT test fee | โฌ150 | Rs.16,515 | g.a.s.t. (during registration) |
| Total | Rs.34,515 | Two separate payments |
Exchange rate used: 1 EUR = Rs.110.10. Rates change daily; confirm the live rate before paying.
- The APS fee is non-refundable regardless of outcome.
- The dMAT fee is separate; refund conditions are listed on the dMAT terms and conditions page.
- Budget for these as two distinct line items. One does not offset the other.

APS dMAT Registration: Step-by-Step for the First 2026 Cycle
- Confirm eligibility using the official affected-fields list before paying anything.
- Register at the g.a.s.t. portal, not the APS India portal: registration link.
- Enter your name exactly as on your passport. Mismatches cause delays at the test centre and later in your APS file.
- Choose a test centre from the available list: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune.
- Pay the โฌ150 fee during registration itself, through the portal's payment method.
- Save your login details. Your dMAT certificate downloads from this same test-taker portal once results are out.
Counselor insight: Seats are first-come, first-served with no waitlist. In similar aptitude-test rollouts, metro test centres in Bengaluru and Mumbai have historically filled up in the final week before the deadline. Register in the first half of your window, not the last.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong
You missed the 15 September 2026 registration deadline: There is no confirmed second dMAT sitting for the 2026 cycle. Contact g.a.s.t. (kontakt@gast.de) to check for any late-announced makeup date, and inform your target universities that your dMAT certificate will follow your APS documents.
You scored low on the dMAT: Per APS India's own FAQ, the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail test. A low score does not automatically get your APS certificate refused. It becomes one data point universities may weigh differently, some may not weigh it at all.
Your degree field is ambiguous (BCA, dual-major, Business Analytics): Email APS India directly for written clarification before registering. Don't assume based on subject overlap with an affected field.
You already have GRE-mandatory programs on your list: The dMAT does not replace the GRE. A handful of competitive programs, including tracks at TU Munich and RWTH Aachen, still require GRE independently. Two different tests, two different purposes: dMAT clears your APS file; GRE clears a specific university's admission bar. See what our counselors say on whether GMAT is required for APS certification if you're weighing GMAT alongside dMAT for a business program.
Your test centre is full: APS India cannot reserve dMAT seats; that's entirely a g.a.s.t. function. Pick the next available centre rather than waiting for your first choice to reopen.
APS dMAT vs Other Requirements: Where It Fits
| Requirement | Purpose | Runs through |
|---|---|---|
| APS Certificate | Verifies your degree is genuine | APS India |
| dMAT | Tests academic aptitude (new, from Summer 2027) | g.a.s.t. |
| GRE/GMAT | University-specific admission input for some programs | ETS/GMAC |
| IELTS/TOEFL | English proficiency for admission and visa | British Council/IDP/ETS |
| Blocked account | Proof of funds for the student visa | Expatrio/Fintiba/Coracle |
Counselor insight: A strong dMAT score is not the finish line. As of January 2026, Germany's official EU Blue Card salary threshold (via the government's Make it in Germany portal) is โฌ50,700 for standard roles and โฌ45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates, and engineering sits on the shortage list. Your dMAT prep time is better spent proportionate to that reality: it's one document in a longer chain that ends in a work visa, not the test that decides your Germany outcome.
3 Key Takeaways on APS dMAT
- Check your Bachelor's degree's exact official wording against the APS India affected-fields list before assuming the dMAT applies to (or exempts) you.
- If you're affected, register for the dMAT before 15 September 2026; seats are first-come, first-served with no confirmed second sitting.
- Budget Rs.34,515 combined for APS and dMAT as two separate payments, and start your APS documentation in parallel rather than waiting for your dMAT certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions About APS dMAT
-
What is the APS dMAT?
The APS dMAT is the Digital Master Test, a new academic aptitude test that select Indian Master's applicants must now submit as part of their APS documentation for Germany. It's administered by g.a.s.t., not APS India, and it applies from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onward for engineering, commerce/finance, and business/management degree holders.
-
Do Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants need the dMAT?
No. The first dMAT certificates only become available from 12 October 2026, after most Winter 2026/27 deadlines. The requirement applies to Summer Semester 2027 intakes and beyond.
-
Do I still need the GRE if I take the dMAT?
Yes, if your target program requires it. The dMAT sits inside your APS file; GRE, where required, is a separate university-level admission input. Taking one does not exempt you from the other.
-
Does a low dMAT score get my APS certificate rejected?
No. APS India's official FAQ states the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail test, and a low score does not automatically lead to APS refusal. Universities independently decide how much weight to give the result.
-
What happens if I miss the 15 September 2026 dMAT registration deadline?
There is currently no confirmed second sitting for the 2026 cycle. Missing it risks delaying your Summer Semester 2027 eligibility, so register well before the deadline rather than waiting for a backup date that may not materialise.
-
What if my degree, like BCA or Data Science, isn't clearly listed?
Check your transcript's exact official wording against the APS India affected-fields PDF. If it's still unclear, email APS India for written confirmation before registering and paying the dMAT fee.
-
How much does the APS dMAT cost in total?
Budget Rs.34,515 combined: Rs.18,000 for the APS certificate and Rs.16,515 (โฌ150 at Rs.110.10/โฌ) for the dMAT, paid separately to two different organisations.
-
Does dMAT replace APS verification?
No. The dMAT is an additional element inside the APS documentation process. APS India continues verifying your academic documents exactly as before; the dMAT result is simply referenced on your final APS certificate once submitted.
-
Is the dMAT mandatory for every Indian student applying to Germany?
No. It only applies to Master's applicants in three specific undergraduate fields, targeting Summer 2027 or later intakes. Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants, exchange-program students, and students outside the affected fields are not required to take it.
