Why 81% of Indian Graduates on the Graduate Route Switch to Skilled Worker Successfully
Eighty-one percent. That is the proportion of Indian graduates on the UK's Graduate Route who successfully switch to a Skilled Worker visa. Not European graduates. Not American graduates. Indian graduates specifically lead this conversion, and by a margin that is not close.
In 2025, 90,031 Skilled Worker extensions were granted to Indians, the highest of any nationality in the UK, beating every other country's contribution to the UK's skilled migration pool. The Indian diaspora in the UK is not just studying. It is transitioning, at scale, into high-skilled permanent employment.
But that 81% figure hides the 19% who do not make it. What the 81% do differently is worth understanding before you arrive.
Currency note: 1 GBP = Rs. 129.50 as of July 22, 2026 (BookMyForex/eurochange interbank rate). All salary figures are gross annual amounts before UK income tax and national insurance.
What the Graduate Route Actually Is
The Graduate Route is a post-study work visa that allows UK degree graduates to work in the UK without employer sponsorship for a fixed period.
Current terms (applications before 31 December 2026):
- Master's and bachelor's graduates who apply before December 31, 2026: 2 years of unsponsored work rights.
Note: September 2026 starters graduate in summer 2027 and will apply after January 1, 2027; they receive 18 months, not 2 years.
- Doctoral graduates: 3 years.
From 1 January 2027:
- Master's and bachelor's graduates: 18 months.
- Doctoral graduates: 3 years (unchanged).
Critical constraints most students overlook:
- Time spent on the Graduate Route does not count toward ILR. It is a job-search window, not a settlement pathway.
- The Graduate Route cannot be extended. Once it expires, you switch to another visa or leave.
- You cannot bring new dependants on the Graduate Route.
The Graduate Route has one purpose: use the unsponsored work window to find a qualified, sponsored role. Everything else is secondary.
Why the Immigration Skills Charge Gives Indian Graduates a Structural Advantage
This is the fact most Indian students do not know before they arrive, and it explains a large part of why Indian graduates convert at 81%.
When a UK employer hires an overseas applicant from abroad, they pay the Immigration Skills Charge: GBP 480 per year for small or charitable sponsors and GBP 1,320 per year for medium and large sponsors. For a 5-year Skilled Worker visa, the additional costs range from GBP 2,400 for small employers to GBP 6,600 for large employers, and these costs are paid before the employee starts.
When a UK employer moves an existing Graduate Route visa holder to a Skilled Worker visa, the Immigration Skills Charge is waived entirely.
This makes a UK-based Indian graduate meaningfully cheaper to sponsor than an equally qualified candidate applying from India. The employer gets the same engineer at a significant cost saving. Employers who have seen a Graduate Route hire's performance over 6 to 12 months are strongly incentivized to sponsor them rather than return to overseas recruitment.
The 81% conversion rate is not just about Indian students being talented. It is partly structural: the system financially rewards employers for converting their Graduate Route hires.
The Four Things the 81% Get Right
1. They choose the right specialisation before arriving
The UK's Skilled Worker visa requires roles at RQF Level 6 (degree level), earning at least GBP 41,700 (approximately Rs. 54.27 lakh/year) at the general threshold, or GBP 34,580 (approximately Rs. 45.02 lakh/year) at the new entrant rate.
Going rates by SOC code for software and data roles are:
Specialisation | SOC Code | Going rate | INR equivalent |
| AI/ML Engineering | SOC 2133 | GBP 54,900/year | Rs. 71.48 lakh/year |
| Data Engineering/MLOps | SOC 2133 | GBP 54,900/year | Rs. 71.48 lakh/year |
| DevOps/SRE | SOC 2139 | GBP 52,300/year | Rs. 68.09 lakh/year |
| Cybersecurity | SOC 2135 | GBP 48,500/year | Rs. 63.15 lakh/year |
| Backend/Full-Stack | SOC 2134 | GBP 54,700/year | Rs. 71.22 lakh/year |
| General minimum | All SOC | GBP 41,700/year | Rs. 54.27 lakh/year |
| New entrant rate | All SOC | GBP 34,580/year | Rs. 45.02 lakh/year |
Every going rate here sits well above the general minimum. The salary threshold is not the bottleneck for AI/ML, data engineering, or DevOps graduates. Getting the role is important. Students who choose generic management, hospitality, or administration roles cannot access sponsorship; those roles fall below RQF Level 6 regardless of salary, a rule in effect since July 22, 2025.
2. They start the job search in semester one, not after graduation
The 81% do not wait until their graduation ceremony to start applying. They arrive, settle in, and begin applying to summer internships within their first 6 to 8 weeks.
Most UK tech and finance summer internship applications open in September and October for the following year. Students who apply in January compete for what remains after the strongest cohort has already been selected. The internship-to-conversion pipeline, using a summer internship to secure a full-time return offer, is how most Indian students in technology roles land their first sponsored role.
The internship transforms candidates from being unknown to being known to the employer, making the employer's decision to sponsor them low-risk and cost-effective due to the ISC exemption.
3. They meet the new B2 English requirement proactively
From January 8, 2026, all new Skilled Worker and Graduate Route applications require B2-level English proficiency. The practical IELTS equivalent is around 5.5 to 6.5 per component with no band below B2.
Many Indian students who entered on the Student visa with IELTS 6.0 find that their existing scores do not automatically meet the Skilled Worker B2 requirement. The 81% who switch successfully have either maintained a qualifying English score throughout, or they rebook and retest before their Graduate Route window narrows.
If your current IELTS profile is borderline, rebook the test and schedule study time before your Skilled Worker switch application.
4. They switch before the January 1, 2027 deadline where possible
Students who apply for the Graduate Route before December 31, 2026, receive 2 years of post-study work rights. From January 1, 2027, that reduces to 18 months for master's graduates.
Six months is a meaningful difference. On a 2-year graduate route, a student who starts their job search in September (semester one) has roughly 30 months from arrival to secure a sponsored role (18 months to graduation plus 24 months on the graduate route). On an 18-month graduate route, the same student has 24 months. Every data point in the conversion story gets tighter in 2027 and beyond.
Students enrolling in September 2025 or earlier and graduating in summer 2026 should apply for the Graduate Route immediately upon graduation and before December 31, 2026.
What the 19% Get Wrong
Choosing roles below RQF Level 6: The most common failure mode. Students accept roles in customer service, retail management, or hospitality that pay above the salary floor but fall below RQF Level 6. Since July 22, 2025, those roles cannot be sponsored under Skilled Worker regardless of pay.
Waiting until semester two to start the job search: By January, the rolling admissions at the highest-converting employers (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Google, and Amazon) are largely full. The remaining opportunities are lower in quality and volume.
Relying on the employer to initiate the sponsorship conversation: Employers do not spontaneously offer Skilled Worker sponsorship. The Graduate Route hire must raise this issue, confirm that the employer holds an active sponsor license at gov.uk/government/publications/register-of-licensed-sponsors-workers, and negotiate the transition timeline before the Graduate Route expires.
Missing the B2 English re-test window: Discovering the B2 English shortfall at the point of a skilled worker application, when the Graduate Route is about to expire, is the second most common avoidable failure. Check your IELTS scores against the B2 requirement on the day you graduate.
Accepting a role below the new entrant rate: The new entrant rate (GBP 34,580) is available only for the first 4 years of Skilled Worker status and only for eligible roles. Students who take roles that pay below GBP 34,580 cannot switch within the UK.
The 2026 Timeline: What to Do and When
- September 2026 (semester one): Begin applying to summer internships and graduate roles. The September to October window is when the best positions open. Apply to at least 15 to 20 roles in your first 4 weeks.
- December 31, 2026: If you are graduating in 2026, apply for the Graduate Route before this date to secure the 2-year window rather than the 18-month window effective January 1, 2027.
- Before switching: Confirm B2 English compliance. Confirm your role is at RQF Level 6. Confirm your employer holds an active sponsor license. Allow 8 weeks for processing.
- Course-completion rule (from mid-2025): You must demonstrate that your course has been formally completed before switching from a student visa to a skilled worker visa. Switching on the Graduate Route after graduation is not subject to this restriction.
The Route from Skilled Worker to ILR
The Graduate Route is not the destination. It is the bridge. The destination is indefinite leave to remain after 5 years of continuous UK residence on the Skilled Worker visa.
The ILR timeline:
- Years 1 to 5: Skilled Worker visa, renewable.
- Year 5: ILR application is eligible.
- Year 6 onwards: British citizenship is eligible, subject to the Life in the UK test and other requirements.
Germany's EU Blue Card route to PR takes 21 months. Canada's Express Entry takes 1 to 3 years. The UK's 5-year ILR is slower, but the national average software engineer salary (GBP 55,580, or GBP 68,769 in London) and the no-lottery Skilled Worker sponsorship route make the overall package more competitive than a single timeline comparison suggests.
The 81% conversion rate means that for Indian students who choose the right specialization, start early, and navigate the visa timeline correctly, the UK pathway from MSc to ILR is well-established, data-backed, and replicable.
