You are shortlisting German universities for a master's in computer science or software engineering. You keep seeing two types of institutions on every list: Technische Universitäten (TUs), which are research-heavy, prestigious, and competitive, and Fachhochschulen (FHs), translated as Universities of Applied Sciences, which are practical, industry-linked, and considerably easier to get into.

For a tech job in Germany, does it matter which type you attended?

The answer is more nuanced than either "TUs are better" or "it doesn't matter." Both are right in different contexts.

Choose an FH if:

  • You want the fastest route into the German job market with a German employer reference already on your CV.
  • You are targeting automotive, Mittelstand, or B2B software companies where FH pipelines are institutionalized.

Either works if

  • You are targeting English-first scale-ups or global tech firms in Berlin or Munich.
