The True Cost of Moving to Germany as a Software Engineer: An Indian Professional's Guide for 2026
Most blogs about moving to Germany for a career in software engineering list the gross salary and stop there. What they skip is everything that happens before you earn your first paycheck: the APS certificate, the blocked account, the Kaution, the flight, the first month of setup costs, and the social insurance that takes roughly 21% of your gross before income tax even starts.
This blog builds the full picture, every verified cost, every deduction, and every date, so you can calculate whether the move makes financial sense for your specific situation.
Currency note: 1 EUR = Rs. 110.37 as of July 31, 2026 (BookMyForex live rate). All salary figures are gross annual amounts before German Income Tax and social insurance unless stated otherwise.
Part 1: One-Time Costs Before You Arrive
APS Certificate: Rs. 18,000 (non-refundable)
The APS certificate verifies your Indian academic records and is mandatory for both German university admission and the student visa. It is operated by the German Embassy in New Delhi, costs Rs. 18,000, has lifetime validity once issued, and takes 3 to 10 weeks to process. Start this process before anything else.
Flight: Rs. 23,000 to Rs. 62,000
One-way fares from Mumbai or Delhi to Munich, Frankfurt, or Berlin range from approximately EUR 210 to EUR 560 (Rs. 23,180 to Rs. 61,810) depending on airline and routing. Budget Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 55,000 for a realistic one-way ticket with checked luggage.
Visa fee: EUR 75 (approximately Rs. 8,278)
The German national visa (Type D) costs EUR 75. The EU Blue Card residence permit issuance costs an additional EUR 100. Total administrative visa costs: approximately EUR 175 (approximately Rs. 19,315).
Shipping belongings: Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 36,000
DHL from India to Germany starts at Rs. 956/kg. FedEx from Rs. 1,195/kg. A 20 to 30 kg shipment costs approximately Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 36,000, including surcharges and GST. Most engineers ship one box of essentials and buy the rest in Germany.
German language course (A1 to B1): Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 90,000
Goethe-Institut India online courses run approximately Rs. 28,500 per level. Exam fees add Rs. 7,500 (A1) to Rs. 18,800 (B1). Budget Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 90,000 to reach B1, including both tuition and exam fees. B1 unlocks PR in 21 months instead of 27 on the EU Blue Card.
Blocked account: EUR 11,904 (approximately Rs. 13.14 lakh)
For the student visa route, you must deposit EUR 11,904 into a blocked account (Sperrkonto) before your visa is issued. This amount is then released to you at EUR 992 per month. It is your money, not a fee. Provider setup fees: Expatrio: approximately EUR 119 setup fee + EUR 9/month. Fintiba: approximately EUR 159 setup + EUR 9.90/month. The blocked account is not required if you enter on an EU Blue Card with a job offer; in that case, your employer provides proof of salary instead.
Part 2: First-Month Setup Costs in Germany
Kaution (security deposit): EUR 1,000 to EUR 4,500
German law caps the security deposit at 3 months' cold rent (Kaltmiete) under §551 BGB. For a shared flat (WG) room, the amount is typically EUR 1,000 to EUR 2,400. In Munich or Frankfurt, you can expect to pay a security deposit for a full apartment that typically ranges from EUR 2,000 to EUR 4,500. This amount is refundable when you move out. Budget this amount as locked capital for the duration of your tenancy.
Furniture and basic setup: EUR 150 to EUR 1,500
WG rooms are often furnished or part-furnished. A basic IKEA setup runs EUR 500 to EUR 1,500 new, or EUR 150 to EUR 500 second-hand via eBay Kleinanzeigen.
SIM card: EUR 5 to EUR 10 one-time
Prepaid plans (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect) start at EUR 5 to EUR 10/month. One-time starter set approximately EUR 10.
Internet: EUR 14 to EUR 25/month initially
Promotional broadband from EUR 14 to EUR 25/month for the first 12 months, rising to EUR 35 to EUR 45 afterwards. Most WG landlords include internet in the warm rent.
Rundfunkbeitrag (public broadcasting fee): EUR 18.36/month
Mandatory per household, not per person. In a WG of 3, you split approximately EUR 6/month each.
Part 3: Monthly Living Costs by City
City | WG room (warm rent) | Food and groceries | Transport | Health insurance (student) | Total monthly |

- Unemployment: 1.3% of gross, capped at EUR 101,400/year gross.
- Long-term care: 1.8% (or 2.1% if childless and over 23), capped at EUR 69,750/year gross.

Figures are for Bavaria/most German states. Actual net income varies slightly by federal state and the exact insurance fund.
The church tax tip: When you register your address (Anmeldung), mark "ohne Konfession" (no religious affiliation). This avoids the Kirchensteuer, which would add 8 to 9% of your income tax, approximately EUR 1,200/year on a EUR 60,000 salary.
Part 5: The EU Blue Card Salary Thresholds for 2026
To qualify for the EU Blue Card in IT and software roles (classified as shortage occupations):
- Standard threshold: EUR 50,700 gross/year (effective January 1, 2026).
- Shortage occupation threshold: EUR 45,934.20 gross/year for IT specialists, recent graduates, and eligible professionals.
Part 6: Germany vs Staying in India, The Honest Comparison
Factor | Bengaluru (typical SWE) | Germany (entry-level SWE) |
| Average gross salary | Rs. 10 to Rs. 13 LPA | EUR 45,000 to EUR 55,000 (Rs. 49.7 to Rs. 60.7 lakh/year) |
| Senior engineer gross | Rs. 18 to Rs. 36 LPA (top product firms) | EUR 70,000 to EUR 95,000 (Rs. 77.3 to Rs. 1,04.9 lakh/year) |
| Net monthly take-home | Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 | EUR 2,470 to EUR 3,695 (Rs. 2,72,615 to Rs. 4,07,817) |
| Monthly living cost | Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 65,000 | EUR 960 to EUR 1,470 (Rs. 1,05,955 to Rs. 1,62,244) |
| Monthly savings potential | Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 50,000 | EUR 1,000 to EUR 2,000 (Rs. 1,10,370 to Rs. 2,20,740) |
| PR pathway | Not applicable | 21 months on EU Blue Card with B1 German |
The honest framing: The nominal salary multiple (4 to 6×) overstates the day-to-day quality-of-life gain. German social contributions and high rents in Munich/Frankfurt close a significant portion of that gap in purchasing-power terms. The durable advantages are absolute EUR savings capacity, hard-currency earnings, comprehensive social protection, and a fast, certain route to EU permanent residency.
Part 7: Your Break-Even Timeline
Total sunk (non-refundable) relocation costs:
Item | Cost |
| APS certificate | Rs. 18,000 |
| Visa fees (D + Blue Card) | Rs. 19,315 (EUR 175) |
| Flight | Rs. 45,000 |
| Shipping | Rs. 25,000 |
| German language (A1 to B1) | Rs. 75,000 |
| First-month furniture/setup | Rs. 55,000 (EUR 500) |
| Total sunk costs | Rs. 2,37,315 (approximately EUR 2,150) |
The Kaution (EUR 1,000 to EUR 4,500) and blocked account (EUR 11,904) are excluded; they are your own money returned to you.
Part 8: What Changes in January 2027
- German minimum wage rises to EUR 14.60/hour from EUR 13.90, described as the largest minimum wage increase in German history. This change directly affects Werkstudent rates and service costs.
- Deutschlandticket pricing will be reviewed in 2027 using a wage and energy index.
- Social insurance ceilings typically adjust annually; verify updated figures at tk.de before moving.
