You don’t need to apply for APS verification if any of the following apply to you:

• You earned a non-German degree while studying in Germany
• You hold a foreign degree obtained outside India (such as a British or Turkish degree)
• You’re planning to pursue a PhD or PostDoc in Germany, and your university does not require APS certification
• Your highest qualification is an international secondary school diploma (like the International Baccalaureate), and you’re applying for a Bachelor’s program in Germany
• You will receive a stipend funded by public sources (either from the EU or the German government)

If you completed Class 12 in India but earned your Bachelor’s degree abroad, you fall into a unique category. We suggest reaching out to the APS office directly, as your specific German university admission requirements depend on whether you need your Class 12 marks.

For the standard application, the APS certificate fee is Rs.18,000, which is about €160. This is a processing fee that you pay when you book, which you can't get back. The interview does not cost anything extra.

Some APS centers charge more for a faster track if you need service quickly. Check with the APS center closest to you to find out what the current express fee is. It changes from time to time.

Important: India only has one APS office, which is in New Delhi, inside the grounds of the German Embassy. For their in-person interview, students from Mumbai and Chennai have to go to Delhi. When making your schedule, remember to include the costs of getting there and staying there (Rs.8,000 to Rs.20,000, depending on the city and length of stay). Students from cities other than Delhi always say that their total timelines are longer because they have to plan their travels. As soon as you have all of your paperwork ready, book your interview time in Delhi.

A copy of the original must be brought to the interview. Originals and photocopies can both be sent in, but the evaluator will check each original in person.

Counselor insight: The most common document error we see is students sending in consolidated marksheets instead of individual semester marksheets. Many private schools give out a one-sheet that lists all four years. APS specifically wants the original records broken down by semester. If your school only provides consolidated sheets, get a letter from the registrar confirming that this is the standard format.

Register at aps-india.de with a personal email that you check frequently, rather than a college email that might expire after graduation. APS sends the final certificate and all appointment confirmations to this address.

Enter the names of the boards, institutions, degrees, years, and percentages of your academic history exactly as they appear on your documents. Avoid using acronyms. Your marksheet's "Visvesvaraya Technological University" must match the format on the form. Discrepancies are one of the main reasons why applications get flagged before the interview.

Save each document as a PDF after scanning it at a minimum of 300 DPI. Avoid taking pictures with your phone because low-quality photos will not pass the portal's review and cause your application to be delayed by one to two weeks. Each file should not exceed 2 MB.

The fee is Rs. 18,000 (approximately €160) and is payable online via the portal. Keep the payment confirmation screenshot in case of any portal error.

After reviewing your paperwork, APS will email you an appointment date in one to three weeks. January through April slots fill up quickly. Instead of waiting for a convenient date, accept the first one that becomes available; the next time slot might be three to four weeks later. As soon as the date is confirmed, students from Chennai and Mumbai should make travel arrangements to Delhi.

The German Embassy complex in Chanakyapuri is home to the APS office. Get there half an hour early. Before the interview, staff members compare each original to the scans you uploaded. The 20-40 minute interview will cover academic topics from your undergraduate degree in the language of the program you want to enroll in. Keep your passport and all original academic documents with you as photo identification.

After a successful interview, the certificate is sent as a digitally signed PDF via email within two weeks. It has an indefinite validity period from the date issued. During your application, the embassy and universities will repeatedly request copies, so keep them on your cloud drive and in your email.

The Indian school year is used to make this calendar. German universities have two main terms: the Winter Semester, which starts in October, and the Summer Semester, which starts in April. The Winter Semester is what most Indian students want to do.

Note for final-year students: If you're graduating in May or June 2026 and need an APS certificate to apply for a visa in July, you should use your provisional certificate to apply for APS in February. Do not wait until you get your degree. The APS will accept provisional certificates as long as they have the official seal of the university and a letter from the registrar attached to them.

It takes twenty to forty minutes. In most cases, the person doing the evaluation is a German academic or a trained person in your field.

If you are an engineering student, you will be asked about basic engineering concepts, not your project work. Business and economics students should learn about basic microeconomics, accounting, and statistics. Humanities: the topic of your thesis and how you plan to do it.

The interview is in the same language as the program you want to go to. If you want to get into a master's program at TU Munich that is taught in English, the interview will be in English. If you want to apply to a program taught in German, it will be in German.

Questions aren't meant to be hard. They ensure that the person being evaluated is the same one whose grades are on the paper.

• Review the most important classes you took in college
• Know how to easily explain your senior project or thesis.
• Find out what your percentage and rank mean (top 10% of your class, recipient of a distinction, etc.).
• Get used to explaining academic ideas in the language of the program you want to attend.

This part talks about the most common reasons why APS applications are turned down or delayed. Being prepared can help you avoid many of these issues.

Counselor insight: It happens more often than students think that names don't match. There is a problem with verification when a father's name is written as "Suresh" on a degree certificate but as "S." on a Class 12 certificate. Get a notarized name consistency affidavit before your APS appointment if your names don't match up in any of these ways.

• Final-year BTech or BSc student aiming for Winter Semester 2026 and graduating in May 2026: Use your provisional certificate to apply for the APS certificate in Germany in February. Don't hold off until the final degree. Book New Delhi as soon as you apply because peak season slots (February to April) fill up in a matter of days. In time for a July visa application, the certificate arrives by April.
• Applying for an MS or one-year master's degree in Germany as a working professional who graduated three to four years ago: The easiest situation. Every document is accessible. Apply in any month, and Delhi will respond in four to six weeks. The original marksheets are frequently at your parents' house, which is a common problem. Before applying, gather them.
• A student who took a year off between their undergraduate studies and Class 12: Before your appointment, prepare a notarized affidavit outlining the gap. Gaps are not penalized by APS, but an explanation must be documented. Your timeline will be extended by four to six weeks if you arrive without this.
• Class 12 students from state boards that have regional language marksheets (Rajasthan, UP, Bihar, Maharashtra, etc.): A government-approved translator must provide you with certified English translations. One to two weeks are needed for this. Before scheduling the APS time, incorporate it into your schedule.

• Not accepted for an APS interview: Ask for written feedback, and APS will tell you why. If a bad interview leads to your rejection from school, you must wait three months before reapplying. Resolving the specific issue makes it easier to handle document rejections.
• The university can't give out individual semester marksheets: Get a letter on official letterhead from the registrar saying that the institute's standard format for consolidated marksheets is correct. Send it with your combined sheet. APS agrees with this decision and gives a good reason for it.
• APS certificate Germany delayed beyond the expected timeline: If you have any upcoming deadlines from the university, please email info@aps-india.de. Occasionally, a verified deadline can help your case move up the list, but APS can't always speed things up.
• The German student visa was denied after the APS certificate was received: The APS certificate does not guarantee a visa. Usually, rejections are because of low language scores, problems with blocked accounts, or problems with motivation letters. • The Class 12 board results are late because they are being reevaluated: Contact APS right away to ask for a temporary slot hold and to explain the delay. A provisional booking gives you time to wait; don't send in your application without the official board marksheet.

1. Apply for the APS certificate Germany at least 5 months before your visa date. That is February for the Winter Semester of 2026. Students from Chennai and Mumbai also add travel time to Delhi.

2. Subject preparation is necessary for the interview, not just paperwork. Two to three weeks before your appointment, review your undergraduate core subjects. This is where most rejections occur, rather than during the document stage.
