Vietnam Steps Into the Global Academic Spotlight at APAIE 2026: And Indian Students Should Pay Attention
From February 22 to 27, 2026, Hong Kong hosted APAIE 2026, the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference and Exhibition, one of the largest higher education gatherings in the Asia-Pacific region, drawing thousands of university leaders and experts from across the world.
For the first time in the history of the event, Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training organized a dedicated Vietnam Pavilion. Seventeen higher education institutions and education organizations represented the country. And for the first time, Vietnam was not attending as a source country watching others recruit its students. It was there to recruit.
Van Lang University made that shift visible.

What Van Lang University Presented at APAIE 2026
Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu, Rector of Van Lang University, delivered a presentation at a regional forum titled "Vietnam: From Mobility Source to Strategic Impact Hub, a Case Study from Van Lang University."
Vietnam has long been a country that sends students abroad for education. The shift now underway is that Vietnam itself is becoming a strategic destination, not just a sender. The presentation from Van Lang University used its own growth and international positioning as the evidence for that claim.
The presentation was built around the university's "Beyond the Seat" philosophy, an approach developed over five years that reframes what a student experience looks like, moving beyond classroom attendance toward research, industry collaboration, and global academic exchange.

The India Connection: MOUs Signed at APAIE 2026
At the conference, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City signed two Memorandums of Understanding with two Indian academic institutions: OP Jindal Global University and CGC University.
These MOUs open formal pathways for faculty exchange, student mobility, research collaboration, and joint academic programs between Indian and Vietnamese institutions. For Indian students already enrolled at Jindal or CGC or considering them, these agreements signal new exchange opportunities to Vietnam that did not formally exist before February 2026.
Why Vietnam Is Becoming a Serious Study Destination
APAIE 2026 was not a marketing exercise for Vietnamese universities. The broader picture confirms genuine momentum.
The economic context: Vietnam's economy is growing rapidly, driven by expansion in AI, semiconductors, and green energy. This is creating real demand for skilled graduates across business, technology, engineering, and design disciplines and attracting international students who want exposure to one of Asia's most dynamic emerging markets.
The scale of international participation: Vietnam's delegation worked with over 3,000 delegates from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology alone held bilateral meetings with 70 universities from various countries during the event, covering joint research, student exchange, and curriculum collaboration.
What Studying in Vietnam Costs
For Indian students, the financial picture is one of Vietnam's most compelling arguments.

MBBS specifically: Vietnam has approximately 20 accredited medical universities, several recognized by the NMC (India), WHO, WDOMS, ECFMG, and FAIMER. Annual tuition at NMC-approved Vietnamese medical universities ranges from VND 85,000,000 to VND 180,000,000 (approximately Rs. 2.97 lakh to Rs. 6.30 lakh per year), approximately 60 to 70% lower than private medical colleges in India. What the Vietnam Pavilion at APAIE Signals
Vietnam is positioning itself for inbound student recruitment, not just export. This matters for Indian students because it represents the early stage of a genuine shift. Vietnam is investing in English-medium programs, international accreditations, and bilateral partnerships at exactly the moment when Indian students are looking beyond the US, UK, Australia, and Canada for more affordable Asia-Pacific options.
The MOUs signed with Indian institutions at APAIE 2026 are the first formal signals of that investment. The next two to three years will determine whether Vietnam becomes a consistent part of how Indian students think about studying in Asia, alongside Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.
