MEXT Scholarship 2027 Is Now Open: Japan Is Offering Indian Students a Fully Funded Master's

MEXT Scholarship 2027 Is Now Open: Japan Is Offering Indian Students a Fully Funded Master's

Japan is offering one of the most comprehensive fully funded scholarships available to Indian postgraduate students anywhere in the world right now. The window is open. The deadline is sixteen days away.

MEXT stands for Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. This scholarship is not a merit certificate. It is comprehensive, government-backed financial support that removes every significant cost of studying in Japan so that selected scholars can focus entirely on their research and academic work

The Embassy of Japan in India opened MEXT 2027 applications on April 20, 2026. The research students' track deadline is May 15, 2026. The scholarship includes a full tuition waiver, a monthly stipend of approximately JPY 143,000 to 145,000, and return airfare.

At the current rate, a monthly stipend of JPY 143,000–145,000 works out to approximately Rs. 84,370-85,550 per month, every month, for the full duration of your master's or PhD in Japan.

(Currency note: 1 JPY = Rs. 0.59 as of April 29, 2026. Always verify the current rate before making any financial decisions.)

Here is everything you need to know.

The Full Funding Breakdown for MEXT

Every major cost of studying and living in Japan is covered:

  • Full tuition waiver: 100 percent of university fees for the entire program. No tuition owed at any stage
  • Monthly stipend: JPY 143,000 to JPY 145,000 per month for Research and Master's track students, approximately Rs.84,370 to Rs.85,550 per month at current rates
  • Return economy-class airfare: From your nearest international airport in India to Japan at the start of the program and back upon completion
  • University accommodation: Most Japanese universities offer international student residence halls; however, availability is not guaranteed, and accommodation costs are generally borne by the student from the monthly stipend.
  • Japanese language training: A structured language program is provided after arrival to help students settle into academic life in Japan

What is not covered:

  • Personal travel within Japan
  • Additional research expenses beyond the standard scope
  • Costs above the monthly living allowance

What Happens After You Submit: The MEXT Selection Timeline Explained

MEXT selection runs in two stages, an embassy screening in India and a final review by MEXT in Tokyo.

The Embassy of Japan in India conducts the first screening through a written examination and interview, then forwards shortlisted candidates to MEXT in Tokyo for the final selection.

The full timeline:

  • April 20, 2026: Applications open at the Embassy of Japan in India
  • May 15, 2026: Research students' application closes at 11:59pm
  • June to July 2026: Written examinations and personal interviews at the Embassy or relevant consulate
  • November 2026: Final list of selected candidates released
  • April or October 2027: Scholars begin their studies in Japan

What Separates Students Who Get MEXT From Students Who Do Not

MEXT is one of the most competitive scholarships available to Indian students. In India alone, an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 students apply each year. Approximately 70 to 100 are selected across all categories. That is a small number from a very large pool.

The candidates who consistently succeed share the following:

A specific and well-developed research proposal:

  • Generic statements about wanting to study in Japan do not get shortlisted
  • Your proposal must clearly identify what you want to research, why Japan is the right place to do it, and how it connects to broader development or bilateral India-Japan priorities
  • This is the single most important document in the entire application

A named Japanese supervisor:

  • Identifying a professor at a Japanese university whose research aligns directly with your area of study significantly strengthens your application
  • Reaching out to potential supervisors before submitting your application is a step most successful MEXT applicants take and one that most unsuccessful ones skip
  • A professor who responds positively to your email demonstrates the viability of your proposed research before you even submit it

A strong academic record:

  • The 70 percent threshold is the minimum; in a competitive pool, higher marks meaningfully improve your position
  • Consistent academic performance across all semesters matters more than a strong final year alone

Some Japanese language ability:

  • Not mandatory, but JLPT N5 or above signals genuine commitment to studying in Japan
  • It stands out during the Embassy interview in a pool of candidates who have none

How to Apply for MEXT 2027: The Exact Steps to Follow

The research student's application is submitted entirely by email, not through an online portal:

  • Step 1: Download the Preliminary Application Form from the Embassy of Japan in India website at in.emb-japan.go.jp
  • Step 2: Complete the form in Word format only. Do not convert to PDF before emailing. The file must be under 1MB
  • Step 3: Prepare all supporting documents, including academic transcripts, passport copy, research proposal, and reference letters as specified in the form
  • Step 4: Email the completed form and all required documents to scholarship-india@nd.mofa.go.jp before May 15, 2026, at 11:59pm
  • Step 5: Wait for the Embassy to contact shortlisted candidates for the written examination and interview in June to July 2026

Which consulate covers your state:

  • West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha: Kolkata consulate
  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana: Chennai consulate
  • Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa: Mumbai consulate
  • Karnataka: Bengaluru consulate
  • All other states: New Delhi Embassy

Why Japan Is Worth It: Career Opportunities After a MEXT Degree

Japan's economy is the third-largest in the world. The country has a well-documented skilled worker shortage across technology, engineering, healthcare, and research, and it is actively expanding pathways for international graduates who want to build careers there after completing their degrees.

For Indian students whose research interests sit within Japan's academic strengths, robotics, materials science, biomedical engineering, environmental science, computer science, or public policy, the MEXT scholarship delivers a fully funded degree and a direct entry point into one of the world's most sophisticated research ecosystems.

The honest caveat to state clearly: daily life in Japan requires Japanese, and the professional job market outside multinational companies requires functional proficiency at the JLPT N2 level or higher. Students who invest in learning the language before they arrive find the entire experience significantly more rewarding, academically, professionally, and personally, than do those who arrive with no Japanese at all.

The Clock Is Running: What You Need to Do Right Now

The research student track closes on May 15, 2026, at 11:59 pm. The preparation, research proposal, supervisor outreach, and supporting documents are where the real work happens, and that work needs to start today.
