Massey University's Toroa International Fee Scholarship for 2027: Complete Guide for Indian Students

Massey University's Toroa International Fee Scholarship for 2027: Complete Guide for Indian Students

Massey University in New Zealand is currently accepting applications for its Toroa International Fee Scholarships for Semester 2 (July) 2026. Up to 145 awards are available across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, each worth NZD 5,000 (approximately Rs. 2,72,050) in tuition fee reduction. Selection is based entirely on academic merit. All international students, including those from India, are eligible.

An important update: The application window for the July 2026 (Semester 2) intake closed on April 15, 2026. Both the Semester 1 and Semester 2 2026 Toroa applications ran in a single round that opened February 15 and closed April 15. If you are reading this in July 2026, the next window to apply is the Semester 1 2027 (February 2027) round, which is expected to open in February 2027 and close in April 2027.

The name "Toroa" comes from the Māori word for albatross, a seabird known for its extraordinary oceanic journeys.

Currency note: 1 NZD = Rs. 55.25 as of July 13, 2026 (BookMyForex mid-market rate). Always verify current rates before financial planning.

What Massey University Is and Why It Matters

Massey University is one of New Zealand's largest and most comprehensive universities, with campuses in Auckland, Wellington, and Palmerston North. It is particularly well regarded for business, aviation, design, agriculture, food science, and veterinary medicine, with a strong reputation for industry-linked, practice-oriented education.

Massey University is ranked #215 globally in QS World University Rankings 2027, its highest-ever position, rising 15 places year-on-year and 3rd in New Zealand. Veterinary science is ranked #1 in Australasia and Asia in QS Subject Rankings 2027. Employment outcomes ranked 173rd globally (up 92 places).

New Zealand holds several advantages for Indian students in 2026: English-medium instruction, a post-study open work visa of 1 to 3 years depending on level and location of study, relatively lower tuition than the US or UK, and a welcoming immigration environment at a time when other major destinations are tightening visa rules.

The Two Toroa Scholarship Tiers

1. Toroa International Undergraduate Fee Scholarship:

For students enrolling in their first undergraduate degree at Massey

Value: NZD 5,000 (approximately Rs. 2,72,050) toward tuition fees for one academic year.

Number of awards: Up to 85 awards for Semester 2 2026.

Eligibility:

  • International student (not a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident).
  • New to Massey, not currently enrolled, and not previously studied at Massey.
  • Intending to enroll full-time, on campus in New Zealand, in the first 120 credits of an undergraduate degree in Semester 2 (July) 2026.
  • Achieved the equivalent of a New Zealand B grade or higher in your preceding qualification.

What a NZ B grade means for Indian students: A NZ B grade broadly equates to 65% to 74% in your previous qualification. For Indian students, this aligns broadly with 60% or above in Class 12 (for undergraduate applicants) or your bachelor's degree (for postgraduate applicants), though Massey assesses equivalence case by case.

Securing the award: Successful recipients must pay their first-year full fees or make a NZD 500 (approximately Rs. 27,205) deposit within 2 weeks of the scholarship award to secure it.

  • New to Massey, first time enrolling at the university.
  • Intending to enroll full-time, on campus in New Zealand, in the first 120 credits of a postgraduate qualification in Semester 2 (July) 2026.
  • Achieved the equivalent of a New Zealand B grade or higher in your preceding qualification.
  • Graduate diploma and doctoral students are not eligible. Master's and other postgraduate students are.

Securing the award: NZD 500 deposit or full first-year fees within 2 weeks of the award.

  • Once you receive access to the Student Portal, navigate to the Scholarships tab.
  • Submit your scholarship application with academic transcripts and eligibility documents uploaded.

Important on the Toroa deadline: Both Semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July) 2026 intakes used a single application window, February 15 to April 15, 2026. If you are reading this after April 15, 2026, both rounds are closed.

The Foundation Peer Scholar Award: Who It Is Actually For

The Foundation Peer Scholar Award (NZD 6,000, October 18, 2026 deadline) is a completely separate program, and it is not available to general international students holding only the Toroa scholarship.

What it actually is: Twelve Peer Scholars are selected annually to serve as ambassadors and leaders of the Scholars Massey community. This is a student leadership and ambassador role, not an entrance scholarship.

Who is actually eligible: All applicants must currently hold one of the following prestigious Massey scholarships: Vice-Chancellor Excellence Scholarship, Master's Research Scholarship, Māori Scholarship, Pacific Master's Research Scholarship, Scholar Award, Māori Scholar Award, or Pacific Scholar Award.

What this means for Indian Toroa recipients: You cannot stack the Foundation Peer Scholar Award on top of the Toroa scholarship. You must first hold one of the more prestigious awards listed above; the Toroa alone does not qualify you.

What Massey Tuition Costs, and What the Scholarship Reduces

Annual tuition before the scholarship:

  • Undergraduate programs: NZD 25,000 to NZD 34,000 per year (approximately Rs. 13.60 lakh to Rs. 18.50 lakh).
  • Postgraduate programs: NZD 27,000 to NZD 40,000 per year (approximately Rs. 14.69 lakh to Rs. 21.76 lakh).

After the Toroa scholarship (NZD 5,000 off):

  • Undergraduate net: approximately Rs. 10.88 lakh to Rs. 15.78 lakh per year.
  • Postgraduate net: approximately Rs. 11.97 lakh to Rs. 19.04 lakh per year.

The Toroa scholarship reduces but does not eliminate tuition. Plan for the net figure, not the scholarship value alone.
