LNAT 2026 Is Open: What Indian Law Students Need to Know for JGLS and UK University Admissions

Registration for the LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) 2026-27 opens on August 1, 2026. Testing begins September 1, 2026. If you are planning to apply to Jindal Global Law School for 2027-28 entry or to any of the 10 UK law schools for September 2027 entry, the LNAT is now the central document in your application.

The LNAT has been the standard undergraduate law admissions test at Oxford, Cambridge, and seven other leading UK universities for over two decades. What is new for Indian students is that Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) has become the first Indian law school to require the LNAT, which is now mandatory for all 5-year integrated LLB programs starting in the 2027-28 academic year. The same test that gets you into Oxford Law can now also get you into one of India's highest-ranked law schools.

What the LNAT Is and What It Tests

The LNAT does not test legal knowledge. It tests the skills law schools believe are necessary to succeed: reading comprehension, logical reasoning, argument analysis, and the ability to draw balanced conclusions from written material.

The exam structure:

• Section A: 42 multiple-choice questions based on 12 reading passages. Duration: 95 minutes. Each passage is followed by 3 to 4 questions testing inference, argument identification, and logical deduction.
• Section B: One essay from a choice of three prompts. Duration: 40 minutes. The essay is not scored but is read directly by admissions tutors at universities. For JGLS specifically, Section B is optional.

Scoring:

• Section A produces a score out of 42.
• Average scores for admitted students at Oxford and Cambridge typically range from 26 to 30+.
• JGLS does not publish a minimum LNAT score, but it tends to admit higher-scoring applicants in its early admission cohorts.

Key rules:

• You can sit the LNAT only once in any admission cycle.
• Scores are valid only for the current cycle. Previous years' scores are not accepted.
• The test is computer-based, taken at Pearson VUE centers. India has 40+ centers. You can take it in your city.

The Deadlines: Every Date That Matters

For JGLS: 2027-28 Admissions

Since 50% of JGLS seats are filled during early admissions, applying in the September to November window gives you the best chance of securing a place in your preferred program.

For UK Universities: September 2027 Entry

Cambridge requires you to register by September 15 and sit the test by October 15, 2026, six weeks after registration opens. If you are applying to Cambridge Law, registering on August 1 is not advisable; it is essential.

The UCAS application deadline for all other LNAT universities is January 13, 2027, at 6:00 pm UK time.

Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS): Testing window September 1, 2026, to March 15, 2027, for July 2027 intake.

How to Register

Registration opens August 1, 2026, at lnat.ac.uk, entirely online through Pearson VUE.

Steps:

• Create an account at lnat.ac.uk from August 1, 2026.
• Select the universities you are applying to. Scores are sent directly to your chosen institutions.
• If applying only to JGLS with no UK university application, enter 0000000000 (10 zeros) in the UCAS number field.
• Choose your preferred test center from India's 40+ Pearson VUE locations.
• Pay the registration fee and book your slot.

LNAT fee for Indian students (non-EU, outside the UK): Approximately GBP 80 to GBP 100 (approximately Rs. 10,416 to Rs. 13,020 at 1 GBP = Rs. 130.20). Confirm the exact fee at registration, as it is subject to change.

Test slots at Pearson VUE centers are limited to a few per day at each location. Centres in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad fill quickly once registration opens. Please book your appointment in the first two weeks of August.

Why the JGLS-LNAT Development Matters

JGLS requiring the LNAT is a structural alignment of Indian legal education with the international standard, not a procedural update. Every student who prepares seriously for the LNAT is building the exact skill set required to compete for places at Oxford, Cambridge, KCL, and LSE at the same time.

Taking the LNAT once now opens two sets of application doors simultaneously: JGLS's 5-year integrated programs and nine UK law schools. The preparation investment is the same. The range of outcomes is significantly wider.

The Study Abroad Dimension: UK Law After the LNAT

Graduate Route visa: UK law graduates can access the Graduate Route post-study work visa, currently 2 years for applications submitted before January 1, 2027. This gives graduates time to secure a qualifying contract for solicitor training or a barrister pupillage. An alternative for students who complete their degree in India (JGLS or elsewhere) is to work for 1 to 2 years and then apply for a 1-year LLM at a UK university, which also provides Graduate Route access.

Solicitor Training Contracts: Magic Circle firms (Clifford Chance, Linklaters, Allen & Overy, Freshfields, and Slaughter & May) and Silver Circle firms recruit solicitors internationally. Trainee salaries at Magic Circle firms start at approximately GBP 50,000–55,000 per year. NQ solicitor salaries typically exceed GBP 100,000 (Rs. 1.30 crore). Securing one as an international student requires strong academics, vacation scheme placements, and an LNAT performance that signals genuine aptitude.

How to Prepare

The LNAT cannot be crammed. It rewards reading habits built over months, not weeks.

What works:

• Reading quality analytical journalism daily: The Economist, Financial Times, The Guardian opinion section, and similar publications that make and analyze arguments.
• Practicing with LNAT past papers, which are available free at lnat.ac.uk. These are the only reliable sample questions. Third-party prep resources vary significantly in quality.
• Timed practice under exam conditions: 42 questions in 95 minutes works out to approximately 2.25 minutes per question. Candidates who run out of time on Section A typically did not practice under timed conditions.
• For Section B: Practice writing structured, two-sided arguments in 40 minutes. The essay is not scored but is read by admissions tutors. A weak essay alongside a strong Section A score is a missed opportunity.

What does not work:

• Legal textbook study. The LNAT does not test law.
• Starting preparation in the final two weeks before the test.
