Deakin University's July 2026 scholarships are open for Indian students; classes begin July 6. Apply Now.

Deakin University announced on May 19, 2026, that scholarship applications for its July 2026 intake are open for Indian students. Three awards are available, ranging from a 30% tuition reduction accessible to most applicants to a 100% full tuition fee waiver for the most exceptional.

Classes begin: Monday, July 6, 2026. Scholarship allocation: First-come, first-served. Apply immediately. Scholarships close when filled, not on a fixed date. Students applying now are still in the window, but it is narrowing.

Currency note: 1 AUD = Rs. 68.17 as of June 1, 2026. Always verify the current rate before making financial decisions.

What Deakin University Is

Deakin is a public research university with campuses in Melbourne (Burwood), Geelong (Waurn Ponds and Waterfront), and Warrnambool. It ranks 207th globally in QS World University Rankings 2026, is in the top 1% of universities worldwide, and has an acceptance rate of around 75%.

Key facts:

  • Accredited by both AACSB and EQUIS, two of the most respected global business school accreditations
  • Over 11,000 international students from 134 countries
  • Industry-integrated curriculum with internships, mentorship, and strong employment outcomes in business, technology, health sciences, engineering, and creative arts
  • One of Australia's top 50 universities under 50 years old (Times Higher Education)

Annual tuition fees (approximate, 2026):

  • Undergraduate: AUD 40,800 to AUD 46,400 per year (Rs.27.81 lakh to Rs.31.63 lakh)
  • Postgraduate: AUD 34,400 to AUD 47,400 per year (Rs.23.45 lakh to Rs.32.31 lakh)

These are the gross figures before any scholarship is applied.

All Three Scholarships Open for July 2026

Scholarship 1: India Bursary, Up to 30% Tuition Fee Reduction

Targeted at Indian students with solid academic performance and a clear aspiration for internationally recognized education.

What it covers:

  • Up to 30% reduction in tuition fees for the full duration of the program
  • Typically assessed automatically during the admissions review; no separate scholarship form required in most cases

What it saves:

  • On a PG program at AUD 40,000/year (₹27.27 lakh): saves approximately ₹8.18 lakh per year, or ₹16.36 lakh over a 2-year master's.

Who can apply:

  • Indian students applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programs at Deakin for the July 2026 intake
  • Solid academic performance is required; specific percentage thresholds vary by program. Confirm with Deakin's India admissions team for your course
  • Must meet one of the eligibility criteria listed on Deakin's official scholarships page

Scholarship 2: Deakin Merit Scholarship, Up to 35% Tuition Fee Reduction

For students with consistently strong academic records throughout their studies, not just in a final year.

What it covers:

  • Up to 35% reduction in tuition fees for the full program duration

What it saves:

  • On a PG program at AUD 40,000/year (₹27.27 lakh): saves approximately ₹9.54 lakh per year, or ₹19.09 lakh over a 2-year master's

Who can apply:

  • Indian students applying to July 2026 undergraduate or postgraduate intake
  • Consistently strong academic performance across your degree, not just the final year
  • Program-specific merit thresholds apply. Check the exact requirement for your course at deakin.edu.au before applying

Scholarship 3: Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarship, 100% Tuition Fee Waiver

The Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarship is exclusively available for the July 2026 cycle. No July application means no access to this award until the next intake opens.

What it covers:

  • 100% tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the degree, undergraduate or postgraduate
  • Access to the Vice-Chancellor's Professional Excellence Program (VCPEP): connecting recipients with global industry leaders, government officials, and international networks
  • Priority consideration for on-campus accommodation (subject to availability, at the student's own cost)

What it saves:

  • On a PG program at AUD 40,000 per year (Rs. 27.27 lakh): saves Rs. 54.54 lakh over a 2-year master's
  • On a UG program at AUD 44,000 per year (Rs. 29.99 lakh): saves approximately Rs. 1.19 crore over a 4-year degree

Who can apply:

  • Exceptional academic achievement, consistent first-class or equivalent marks across your entire academic career, not one strong year
  • Demonstrated leadership through positions held, initiatives led, or community work with measurable outcomes
  • Extracurricular achievement beyond participation: competitive results, creative output, or substantive community contribution
  • Academic marks alone will not secure it; the selection is for the complete profile

How many are awarded: Only 10 Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarships are awarded for the full 2026 academic year across all three intakes. With three intakes sharing this pool, the number available for the July cycle is small. Apply as early as you can.

Intake Dates and What Happens If You Miss July

July 2026 intake:

  • Teaching begins: Monday, July 6, 2026
  • Scholarship allocation: First-come, first-served, apply now

If July 2026 does not work for you:

  • November 2026 intake: Teaching begins November 2, 2026. Recommended application deadline August 30, 2026. Course availability is more limited in trimester 3. The Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarship may not be available; confirm with Deakin directly
  • March 2027 intake (Trimester 1): The primary intake with the widest course range. Trimester 1 is the best entry point if you need more time to build your application

For the Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarship specifically, July 2026 is the confirmed window. Do not assume it will be available in November.

Post-Study Work Rights and PR Pathway

Graduating from Deakin opens access to Australia's Post-Study Work Visa (subclass 485):

  • Bachelor's or Honours degree: 2 years of open work rights
  • Master's by Coursework: 2 years
  • Master's by Research: 3 years
  • Doctoral degree: 3 years (4 years for Indian nationals under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, AI-ECTA)

No job offer is needed to activate the visa. Work for any employer in any sector.

Australia PR pathway from Deakin:

  • Melbourne and Geelong campuses are metropolitan; no regional PR points advantage
  • Warrnambool campus adds 5 bonus points to your skilled migration PR application
  • Check whether your occupation is on the MLTSSL before choosing your program; PR eligibility depends on your field, not just your degree

Living Costs by Campus

Melbourne (Burwood campus):

  • Monthly costs: AUD 1,800 to AUD 2,500 (Rs. 1,22,706 to Rs. 1,70,425)
  • Largest Indian student community, strong employment in technology, finance, and healthcare

Geelong:

  • Monthly costs: AUD 1,400 to AUD 1,900 (Rs. 95,438 to Rs. 1,29,523)
  • 1 hour from Melbourne by train. More affordable with a growing employer base in healthcare and education

Warrnambool:

  • Monthly costs: AUD 1,000 to AUD 1,400 (Rs.68,170 to Rs.95,438)
  • Cheapest campus. Regional PR points advantage. Smaller student community

How to Apply

  • Go to deakin.edu.au and find your program in the course directory
  • Apply through the Deakin Application Portal
  • For the India Bursary and Merit Scholarship: Scholarship consideration typically happens automatically during the admissions review. Confirm with the Deakin India team for your specific program.
  • For the Vice-Chancellor's Meritorious Scholarship: submit a specific scholarship application alongside your program application; this is not automatic
  • Apply as early as possible. Scholarships are allocated first-come, first-served.

Documents you need:

  • Academic transcripts from all institutions
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.0 overall for UG, 6.5 overall for PG (some courses like Nursing and Law require 7.0). TOEFL and PTE also accepted
  • Statement of Purpose or motivation letter (required for VC Meritorious scholarship)
  • Evidence of leadership and extracurricular achievement (for VC Meritorious)
  • Passport copy

One Caveat Worth Knowing

Australia rejected approximately 40% of Indian student visa applications in 2025. Your genuine student statement, explaining why you chose this specific course at this institution, must be specific, honest, and credible.

A Deakin scholarship strengthens your visa application, but the visa decision is separate. Prepare both with equal care.

The July 6 Start Date Is Close

Classes begin July 6. The vice-chancellor's meritorious scholarship is July-only. Every day of delay reduces your position in the queue.
