What You Are Expected to Do as an Arrell Scholar

Being selected is not a passive award. There are real responsibilities that come with the funding, and the selection committee expects you to understand them before you apply.

Award recipients will be expected to register for UNIV*6050, a one-semester course offered in the winter semester in their first year, or commit to an equivalent experiential learning opportunity as approved by their supervisor and the Arrell Food Institute Director. Award recipients will also be expected to contribute time equivalent to UNIV6050 coursework to the collaborative, interdisciplinary Arrell Food Institute projects over the course of the award period.

Beyond the course requirement, scholars are expected to:

• Participate in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams working with community, government, and industry partners
• Engage in workshops, seminars, and leadership development activities through the Arrell Food Institute
• Maintain full-time registration and satisfactory academic progress throughout the award period
• Contribute to the Arrell Food Institute's broader research and public engagement mission

Who Is Eligible: The Checklist

To be eligible, applicants must be entering a Master's degree program at the University of Guelph in Fall 2026, hold a minimum first-class A-minus or equivalent admissions average, have a research interest aligned with the mission of the Arrell Food Institute, meet all graduate admission requirements of the University of Guelph, and secure support from a prospective University of Guelph faculty advisor.

The scholarship is open to students from all countries. International applicants should check the International Credentials Guidelines on the University of Guelph website to confirm degree equivalencies before applying.

One condition that many applicants miss entirely: candidates must secure a prospective University of Guelph faculty advisor who agrees to support their application and confirm supervision. The online system will automatically email your prospective advisor to request confirmation. If your advisor does not respond before the deadline, your application is incomplete.

This scholarship cannot be held alongside:

The Ontario Graduate Scholarships, QEII Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology, the Brock Doctoral Scholarship, the Dairy Farmers of Ontario Doctoral Research Assistantship, or Tri-Agency Scholarships, including the Vanier.

The Application Process: Two Parts, Both Mandatory

The Arrell Scholarship requires two completely separate submissions, and both must be completed before their respective deadlines. Failure to complete either in full will result in disqualification.

Part 1: Graduate Program Application

Applicants must submit a complete application for admission to a graduate program at the University of Guelph with a research plan that aligns with the vision of the Arrell Food Institute. The graduate program application must be fully completed by the deadline, including all required supporting documents.

For Fall 2026, the deadline for the graduate program application was February 1, 2026. If you have not yet submitted your graduate application, contact the graduate program assistant of your desired department immediately to ask whether a late application is still possible.

Part 2: Arrell Scholarship Application

The final deadline to submit the Arrell Scholarship application is April 15, 2026.

You will need to prepare and submit:

• A statement of research interests and personal motivations,  maximum 2 pages plus 1 page for citations
• A full academic CV highlighting research experience, publications, awards, and community engagement
• Official academic transcripts
• A letter of support from your prospective University of Guelph faculty advisor confirming supervision

If you haven't received confirmation from your faculty advisor as of today (April 13), you must address it immediately. The system emails the advisor automatically and requires their response before April 15.

What a Strong Application Actually Looks Like

The selection committee evaluates candidates across several dimensions. Understanding what they are genuinely looking for is what separates a memorable application from a forgettable one.

1. Academic excellence. A first-class average is the minimum requirement, not a differentiator. The strongest applicants have a consistent, strong academic record across their entire undergraduate degree.

4. Advisor alignment. Your proposed supervisor's research interests need to genuinely connect to the Arrell Food Institute's mission. An advisor working in an unrelated area weakens your application regardless of how strong your personal statement is.

You can still meet the April 15 deadline if you have submitted your graduate application, confirmed your advisor, and prepared your research statement. If any of those three things are not in place, be honest with yourself about whether two days is enough time to do the job properly.

If you miss this cycle, the 2027 round follows the same pattern. Based on previous years, the next graduate application deadline will fall around February 2027, and the scholarship application deadline around April 2027. The time to start preparing for that cycle is now, not next January.
