Official salary figures by level are in Field-by-field entry salary and payback.
1. Role snapshot. Full-stack, backend and cloud engineering, DevOps, mobile, enterprise systems.
2. Why Australia. Professional occupations as a group are projected to grow 21.4% to 2035 (JSA). ICT occupations are assessed for migration by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Software Engineer (261313), Developer Programmer (261312) and Systems Analyst (261112) have historically been on the MLTSSL; confirm each code on the Home Affairs list tool, since 189 invitations are issued by occupation ceiling and ICT cut-offs have typically been well above 65 points.
3. Universities to shortlist. University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, UNSW, Monash, UTS, RMIT. Prefer ACS-accredited courses (ACS). a Master of Information Technology in Australia is a common route into this field.
4. Salary progression. No official graduate salary by level is published. Use JSA's occupation profile for "Software and Applications Programmers" and QILT's "Computing and information systems" study area.
5. Employers and cities. Examples of large employers: Atlassian, Canva, global cloud and technology firms, major banks' technology arms. Sydney and Melbourne have the largest concentrations. Many graduate programmes require citizenship or PR; check eligibility.
6. Visa and occupation notes. Realistic routes: 190 state nomination (check each state's ICT criteria), employer-sponsored 482 Core Skills → 186, and 189 if your points clear the round cut-off. The Specialist Skills stream (AUD 146,576+) does not need an occupation list.
7. AI outlook. JSA's projections do not yet include generative AI effects. AI coding tools are changing entry-level tasks; system design, integration, security and product judgement differentiate candidates.
8. Career switch. Software engineering → product management is a common path in Australian technology firms.
9. Skills checklist. Programming fundamentals, one cloud platform, databases, system design, version control, testing, AI-assisted development, security basics, communication, a public project portfolio.
10. The realistic market for international CS graduates. No official source publishes employment rates for international computing graduates specifically, so claims that the market is a "myth" or "booming" cannot be tested against official data. What is official: QILT shows international graduates overall have lower short-term full-time employment and lower median salaries than domestic graduates, with the salary gap persisting three years on (What official data says about international graduates' outcomes); unemployment rose to 4.6% in August 2026 (The job market in 2026: what the official data shows). Many large graduate programmes and most government and defence roles require citizenship or PR. Plan for a 6-12 month search, use internships and Professional Year, and check QILT's international tables for Computing and information systems at your shortlisted universities.
1. Role snapshot. Data analyst, data scientist, machine-learning engineer, AI solutions architect.
2. Why Australia. Demand spans banking, retail, government and research. Check the current JSA Occupation Shortage List for the exact occupation.
3. Universities to shortlist. University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, UNSW, Monash.
4. Salary progression. No official figure by level; use JSA and QILT as in 14.1.4.
5. Employers and cities. Examples: the major banks (CBA, ANZ, Westpac, NAB), large retailers, CSIRO's Data61. Sydney and Melbourne dominate.
6. Visa notes. Data roles map to several occupation codes (for example ICT business/systems analyst or data scientist codes), which sit on different lists and may go to different assessing authorities (ACS or VETASSESS). Confirm your exact code before planning.
7. AI outlook. A domain amplified by AI demand, but tools also automate routine analysis; statistical depth, domain knowledge and communication matter more.
8. Career switch. Into product, AI strategy or analytics leadership roles.
9. Skills checklist. Python, SQL, statistics, machine learning, visualisation, cloud data tools, experimentation, stakeholder communication, projects on real datasets.
10. Entry-level data and analytics roles in 2026. There is no official figure for entry-level analytics hiring of international graduates. Check the current JSA Occupation Shortage List rating for your target occupation, and expect employers to test SQL, a BI tool, statistics and communication in technical interviews. Many entry-level analysts are hired from internships, graduate programmes or adjacent roles (reporting, operations, support), so build one of those routes during study.
1. Role snapshot. Accountant, financial analyst, business analyst, audit and advisory.
2. Why Australia. Sydney hosts the Australian headquarters of the major banks, the Big 4 professional-services firms and Macquarie Group; Melbourne is the other major centre.
3. Universities and qualifications. University of Melbourne, UNSW, University of Sydney, Monash. Professional bodies: CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ (CA ANZ), IPA. ICAI and CA ANZ have an MoU, approved by India's Cabinet in 2021, providing mutual recognition through a bridging mechanism (PMO India); CPA Australia has a separate MRA giving eligible ICAI members in good standing a path to Associate CPA membership (CPA Australia). Confirm current terms with each body.
4. Salary progression. No official figure by level; use JSA and QILT.
5. Employers and cities. Examples: Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG; CBA, ANZ, Westpac, NAB; Macquarie. Sydney and Melbourne.
6. Visa notes. Accountant occupations are assessed by CPA Australia, CA ANZ or IPA. Accounting has historically needed high points for 189 invitations; check recent round results and state criteria before planning (CPA Australia).
7. AI outlook. Automation is reshaping transaction processing and audit sampling; demand shifts toward advisory, data literacy and regulation.
8. Career switch. Finance → analytics or consulting.
9. Qualification checklist. Check whether your degree is accredited by the professional body; whether ICAI membership gives exemptions; additional subjects and practical-experience requirements; and whether a Professional Year (worth 5 points) is available.

1. Role snapshot. Security analyst, cloud security engineer, penetration tester, security architect, governance-risk-compliance (GRC).
2. Why Australia. Demand comes from banks, telecoms, government and critical infrastructure, including the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre. Processing times for Core Skills nominations are not guaranteed; check the current Home Affairs processing times (Australian Cyber Security Centre).
3. Universities to shortlist. UNSW, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Deakin, RMIT. Confirm each course's structure and accreditation directly.
4. Salary progression. No official figure by level is published; use JSA and QILT.
5. Employers and cities. Big 4 cyber practices, major banks, Telstra and other telecoms, government agencies. Canberra roles in government and defence commonly require citizenship and a security clearance.
6. Visa notes. Cyber roles map to ICT occupation codes assessed by ACS. The employer-sponsored Core Skills stream needs the occupation on the CSOL and a salary of at least AUD 79,423.
7. AI outlook. AI raises attack volume and sophistication and automates some monitoring; skilled analysts and architects remain in demand.
8. Career switch. Technical security → security consulting or GRC leadership.
9. Skills and certification checklist. Networking, operating systems, cloud security, incident response, scripting, GRC frameworks, recognised industry certifications, a lab portfolio.
1. Role snapshot. Civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and process engineers; mining engineers.
2. Why Australia. Mining is projected by JSA to grow strongly in percentage terms, and Western Australia hosts much of the resources sector (JSA).
3. Universities to shortlist. University of Queensland, UWA, Curtin (resources); University of Melbourne, Monash (civil and general). Choose Engineers Australia-accredited degrees.
Explore Top engineering universities in Australia for Indian students. Students weighing a management-track engineering degree may also consider a Master's in Engineering Management or an MTech in Australia.
4. Salary progression. No official figure by level; mining and remote fly-in fly-out roles often pay allowances. Use JSA and QILT.
5. Employers and cities. Examples: BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside; consulting firms such as Worley, Aurecon, GHD; electricity networks. Perth (resources), Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney.
6. Visa notes. Engineers Australia assesses engineering occupations. Pathways: a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is only one of several routes - graduates of Engineers Australia-accredited Australian degrees use the accredited-qualification pathway, and India has been a full Washington Accord signatory since 2014, so eligible NBA-accredited Indian degrees can use the Washington Accord pathway. Check which pathway applies to you.
7. AI outlook. Automation and remote operations are changing mining roles toward systems, data and control engineering.
8. Career switch. Engineering → operations or technical management within resources companies.
9. Registration and assessment. Engineers Australia pathways (accredited Australian qualification, Washington/Sydney/Dublin Accord, or CDR); state registration where required (for example Queensland and Victoria for certain professional engineering services); timing of assessment relative to graduation.
1. Role snapshot. Registered nurse (general, aged care, mental health), midwife, allied health (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and others).
2. Why Australia. Health Care and Social Assistance is Australia's largest industry and has the strongest projected employment growth over 5 and 10 years, driven by the ageing population (JSA). The sector's share of employment was 15.2% in 2023 and is now close to one in six jobs.
3. Registration pathway. Who registers you: practising requires registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra. Graduates of an approved Australian nursing degree apply for registration on completion. Internationally qualified nurses go through the Board's assessment process. ANMAC's role is the separate skills assessment for migration. Check Ahpra for the current internationally qualified nurse pathway. The NMBA English language skills standard (in effect from 18 March 2025, with revised minimum test scores from 23 April 2026) applies to all first-time applicants; because India is not a recognised country under it, Indian-educated nurses should expect to take an approved English test (NMBA).
4. Universities to shortlist. University of Melbourne, Monash, UNSW, QUT, University of Sydney, Deakin, La Trobe - confirm the course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board (ANMAC-accredited) (ANMAC).
A full breakdown of nursing fees and courses in Australia for international students is worth reading before you shortlist.
5. Salary progression. Nurse pay is set mainly by state public-sector enterprise agreements; check your state health department's current pay scale.
6. Employers and cities. State health departments and hospital networks, private hospitals, aged care providers. All states recruit; regional areas often have larger shortages.
7. Visa notes. Registered nurse occupations have received subclass 189 invitations and feature in state nomination programmes. Points: there are no nursing-specific points. The 15 points come from a subclass 491 regional nomination (or family sponsorship), available to any eligible occupation. Separately, 5 points are available for completing Australian study in a regional area (Home Affairs points calculator).
8. AI outlook. Direct clinical care depends on physical presence and judgement; AI is growing in documentation, triage support and diagnostics.
9. Career switch. Clinical specialist, nurse educator, nurse unit manager, health management.
10. Registration checklist. Ahpra/NMBA registration; ANMAC skills assessment for migration; NMBA English standard; bridging or outcomes-based assessment for overseas-qualified nurses; state employment requirements (for example immunisation and working-with-children checks) (Ahpra).
11. Other health routes: public health, pharmacy, allied health

If the occupation needs prior experience you do not have, the course may still be worthwhile for a return to India, but it is unlikely to lead directly to skilled migration.
Field notes for other common choices
| Field | Registration or licensing | What to check |
| Psychology | Practising as a psychologist needs registration with the Psychology Board of Australia after an APAC-accredited study sequence. Graduates of non-accredited programmes may be eligible for a bridging programme (about 12-18 months) before an accredited fourth year; the 4+2 internship closed to new applicants on 30 June 2022 (APAC). An APS assessment for migration does not mean you are eligible for registration (Psychology Board). | Whether the course is APAC-accredited at the level you need; roles open without registration (research, HR, wellbeing support) |
| Construction and project management | No registration for most graduate roles; state builder licensing is separate | Graduate titles (site engineer, project coordinator); the assessing authority's experience requirement for manager occupations |
| Supply chain and logistics | None | Coordinator and analyst entry roles; JSA rating for the occupation |
| Media and marketing | None | Portfolio, internships, JSA demand; roles are concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne |
| Law | An Indian law degree does not give the right to practise; admission is decided by each state or territory's admitting authority | The authority's academic and practical-training requirements before choosing an LLM |
| Human resources | None; professional certification is voluntary | Whether the course is recognised by the professional body; entry roles (HR coordinator) |
An MBA is built for people with work experience; recent graduates are usually better served by a Master of Management, Business, Commerce or Business Analytics.
1. Role snapshot. Business analyst, operations, marketing, consulting, product and general management tracks. "Business" is not a single occupation for visa or employer purposes.
2. Which programme. MBAs require experience - for example UNSW's AGSM full-time MBA needs at least 2 years of full-time professional experience and its MBA (Executive) at least 5 years (UNSW AGSM). Many Master of Management or Business programmes are designed for graduates without experience; check each course.
3. Duration and the 485. AGSM's full-time MBA runs over 12 months. A 12-month course may not meet the 485's 2-academic-year requirement on its own (Master's, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate? One year or two?); a 2-year Master's does, if the other rules are met.
4. Outcomes. Business and management is one of the most crowded fields for international graduates: QILT reports that among the top five source countries, Business and management and Computing together account for at least half of international postgraduate coursework graduates, and international postgraduate coursework graduates' median full-time salary was AUD 69,400 in 2025, against AUD 104,700 for domestic graduates, who are typically older and more experienced (QILT 2025 GOS International Key Findings).
5. Visa notes. Management occupations usually need relevant work experience for a positive skills assessment, so a business degree alone rarely leads to a points-tested visa. Employer sponsorship for a specific role (The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is the more common route. Accounting is separate and needs an accredited course (Finance & Accounting).
6. Checklist. Programme type matches your experience; course length meets the 485 rule; total cost; specialisation that maps to a real entry role; internships or industry projects; value to Indian employers if you return.
