Use Jobs and Skills Australia's Occupation Shortage List for demand and the Home Affairs occupation lists for visa eligibility - they are different tools and do not always agree.
Choosing your field: what's in demand in Australia right now
Australia's shortage list and skilled occupation framework
Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) publishes Australia's national shortage assessment as the Occupation Shortage List (OSL). It rates each occupation as in national shortage, metropolitan shortage, regional shortage or no shortage, nationally and by state (JSA). JSA itself notes that a shortage rating does not mean job seekers face little competition.
What the official projections show (May 2025 to May 2035):
| Area | Official finding | Source |
| Health Care and Social Assistance | Largest industry; strongest projected growth over 5 and 10 years, driven by the 65+ population: about +290,300 jobs (12.3%) to May 2030 and +541,900 (22.9%) to May 2035 | JSA industry projections |
| Professionals (all fields) | Projected +456,900 (11.6%) to 2030 and +845,300 (21.4%) to 2035 | JSA occupation projections |
| Fastest-growing occupations | Include dental assistants, nursing support and personal care workers, and paramedics | JSA occupation projections |
| Retail Trade | One of the lowest projected growth rates | JSA industry projections |
JSA states its projections do not yet reflect the labour-market effects of generative AI.
Classification change to watch: JSA is moving its occupation data from ANZSCO to the new OSCA classification, with a fuller OSCA data release scheduled for November 2026 (JSA). Visa occupation lists still refer to occupation codes, so confirm which code system the Home Affairs list you rely on uses.
The six domains this guide covers in depth
Software Engineering & IT · Data Science, Analytics & AI · Finance & Accounting · Cybersecurity · Engineering & Mining/Resources · Nursing & Healthcare
Course versus occupation: do not confuse the two
- The course you study does not decide the occupation you can nominate for skilled migration.
- The assessing authority (for example ACS, Engineers Australia, ANMAC, CPA Australia) decides whether your qualification and experience match an occupation code.
- Each visa has its own occupation list, and each state sets its own nomination criteria.
- Check the assessing authority's rules and any professional registration before choosing a course because it "appears on a list".
Demand versus migration eligibility
Strong employer demand does not guarantee visa access, and visa-list status does not guarantee a job. Evaluate each separately:
| Test | Where to check |
| Labour-market demand | JSA Occupation Shortage List and employment projections |
| Visa occupation-list status | Home Affairs skilled occupation list tool |
| Skills assessment | The occupation's assessing authority |
| State nomination | Each state or territory's migration website |
| Employer sponsorship | CSIT/SSIT thresholds and market salary rates |
From your undergraduate degree to an Australian Master's
Start from what your degree qualifies you for, then check demand and visa implications - not the other way round.
| Indian background | Master's that usually build on it | Check before choosing |
| BCom, BBA | Professional Accounting, Finance, Business Analytics, Management, Supply Chain | Accounting courses should be accredited by CPA Australia or CA ANZ; an MBA usually needs work experience (Business, Management and MBA) |
| BE/BTech (CS, IT) | IT, Computer Science, Data Science, Cybersecurity, AI | ACS accreditation (Software Engineering & IT) |
| BE/BTech (civil, mechanical, electrical) | Professional Engineering, Engineering Management, Construction or Project Management | Engineers Australia accreditation; management occupations often need experience (Fields outside the six domains: how to test demand before enrolling) |
| BSc (maths, statistics, physics) | Data Science, Statistics, Analytics | Programming prerequisites |
| BPharm, nursing, allied health | Public Health, Health Management; clinical practice needs registration | Other health routes: public health, pharmacy, allied health |
| BA/BSc Psychology | Counselling, Public Health, HR, Organisational Psychology | Practising as a psychologist needs an accredited sequence (Fields outside the six domains: how to test demand before enrolling) |
| BA, BMM, media | Marketing, Communications, Digital Media | Portfolio expectations |
Each university defines "related discipline" on the course entry page; the table is a starting point, not an entry rule.

Switching fields
- Many Master's for career-changers accept any bachelor's degree but run longer (commonly 2 years) because they include foundation subjects.
- A Graduate Certificate in the new field can be an entry step that articulates into the Master's with credit; note that a Graduate Certificate alone does not qualify for the 485 (Master's, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate? One year or two?).
- Explain the switch clearly in your GS answers: why the new field, and how it connects to your background or work (Answering the Genuine Student questions: a structure checklist).
Hybrids (for example CS + business)
- Look for Master's in Business Information Systems, Business Analytics, or IT with management electives, or a double Master's.
- Double degrees add duration and cost; check whether each part is accredited for the profession you want.
- Compare the roles each option opens (How to read this section), not the title.
Degree levels: Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD in Australia
Your qualification level decides your 485 stay period, so pick the level for your career first and then check what it means after graduation.

Bachelor's in Australia for Indian students
- Class 12 results (CBSE, CISCE, state boards) are accepted directly by most universities; each course publishes its own required score; there is no official national range.
See what studying in Australia after 12th usually involves before you shortlist courses.
- Most Bachelor's degrees take 3 years; most engineering degrees take 4 years and are often structured as Bachelor (Honours).
- For Indian nationals, a standard Bachelor's gives the same 485 stay as other nationalities - up to 2 years. Only a Bachelor's with First Class Honours in STEM (including ICT) earns up to 3 years under AI-ECTA (Study Melbourne).
Master's: the dominant choice for Indian students
See this overview of postgraduate courses in Australia for how the Master's landscape is organised.
- Usually requires a relevant Bachelor's; coursework Master's typically run 1.5-2 years. Many universities give credit for a related Indian 4-year degree, shortening the course.
- 485 impact: Indian nationals can stay up to 3 years after a Master's (coursework, extended or research), against 2 years for general coursework graduates (Study Melbourne).
- Watch the course length. The Post-Higher Education Work stream requires your Australian study to have taken at least 2 academic years (the "Australian study requirement", assessed in CRICOS-registered study over at least 16 calendar months). A 1-year or 1.5-year Master's with advanced standing may not meet it on its own. Check before accepting credit (Course packaging, credit and recognition of prior learning).
Master's, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate? One year or two?
The choice changes what you can do after graduating, not only what you learn.
| Qualification | AQF level | Typical length | Leads to a 485 on its own? |
| Master's (coursework) | 9 | 1-2 years | Yes (Post-Higher Education Work stream), if the course meets the 2-academic-year Australian study requirement |
| Graduate Diploma | 8 | 1 year | Only if it follows, and is related to, an Australian Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate |
| Graduate Certificate | 8 | 6 months | No - Graduate Certificates no longer meet the 485 study requirement |
Source: Study Australia, Temporary Graduate visa study requirement.
- One year or two: the 485 needs at least 2 academic years of CRICOS study completed over at least 16 calendar months. A 1-year or 1.5-year Master's - including a 12-month full-time MBA - may not meet this on its own. Check the CoE duration before accepting credit (Study Australia).
- A two-year course does not guarantee a 485: you must also meet the age, English, timing and health and character rules (485 eligibility checklist).
- Employer value: no official data compares employer preference for a Master's over a Graduate Diploma; a Master's is the higher qualification (AQF 9) and is the usual requirement where professional accreditation is involved.
- Recognition in India: equivalence for further study or government jobs is decided by Indian bodies such as the Association of Indian Universities (If you plan to return to India after study).
What happens after graduation? Qualification → 485 stream → stay period: Master's by coursework gives Indian nationals up to 3 years; Bachelor's up to 2 years; PhD up to 4 years (The India-specific advantage under AI-ECTA). You apply from within Australia within 6 months of completing the course.
PhD in Australia
- Typically 3-4 years. Funding comes through university scholarships, including the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) administered by universities, and project-linked stipends (Department of Education).
See detailed PhD fees, requirements, and scholarships before shortlisting a programme.
- 485 impact: Indian PhD graduates can stay up to 4 years (general: 3 years since 1 July 2024) (Study Melbourne).
- Age exception: Master's by research and PhD graduates can apply for a 485 up to age 49 (under 50); most other applicants must be 35 or under (The age cap).
- Work rights while studying: once a Master's by research or doctorate has commenced, there is no fortnightly work cap (Home Affairs).
TAFE and VET: when this route makes sense
- Difference: VET qualifications (Certificate III/IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma) are competency-based and job-focused; university degrees are academic and research-linked.
- Where VET leads directly to work: many trades and some care and technical occupations. Trades occupations were among those invited at 65 points in the June 2026 subclass 189 round, but trade skills assessment usually requires employment evidence, not a qualification alone (Home Affairs SkillSelect rounds).
- Post-study rights: VET graduates use the Post-Vocational Education Work stream of the 485 (up to 18 months) and must also meet a skills assessment requirement in a relevant occupation (Home Affairs).
- 2027 settings: TAFE students will be exempt from the NPL in 2027 (Department of Education), and under MD115 TAFE applications already receive Priority 1 processing.
- Caution: do not choose a VET course only because the tuition is lower. Check the full post-study pathway, the skills assessment and whether the occupation is on the list you need.
Course packaging, credit and recognition of prior learning
- Packaging: an English course, foundation or diploma can be packaged with the main degree, on one or more CoEs. Your visa is usually granted to cover the whole package.
- Credit transfer / RPL: a relevant Indian degree or work experience can reduce duration and cost.
- What to check before accepting a shorter course: whether the reduced duration still meets the 485 Australian study requirement, whether the qualification remains accredited for your profession, and whether points-test Australian-study points (which require at least 2 academic years) still apply.
