St. George's University Opens August 2026 Admissions for Indian Students: What You Need to Know Before Applying

St. George's University (SGU) in Grenada, West Indies, is one of the most established names on that path. Founded in 1976, it has graduated over 25,000 doctors now practicing in more than 50 countries. In 2026, SGU students secured over 800 US residency positions across 23 specialties. Applications for the August 2026 intake are open now, timed specifically to align with the Indian academic calendar so students do not need to take a gap year to join.

Why August Works for Indian Students

SGU runs three intakes a year: January, April, and August. The August 2026 cohort is the one SGU has specifically opened to Indian applicants, and the timing is deliberate. Students completing Class 12 or an undergraduate pre-medical degree in India can join the August cohort without having to wait months for the next available window.

Applications go through the official portal at sgu.edu. There is no application fee for the initial inquiry. The deadline for non-Grenadian applicants to submit applications and all supporting documentation is June 15, 2026, for the August class. Apply well before this date to allow time for document preparation.

The Dual Degree: Not Just a Marketing Line

Most Caribbean medical universities offer a single degree. SGU offers something different, and it is worth understanding what that actually means before you apply.

SGU has maintained an academic partnership with Northumbria University in the UK since 2007. Students admitted to the August 2026 intake can begin their medical education at either the SGU campus in Grenada or Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK. Eligible students who complete both programs graduate with two degrees simultaneously:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from St. George's University, Grenada
  • Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) from Northumbria University, UK

Together, these create a credential recognized across multiple licensing pathways. SGU graduates can pursue the USMLE to practice in the US, the PLAB or MRCP for the UK, and the AMC for Australia. The dual degree is not automatic for every student. It applies to eligible students who complete the required components of both programs. Confirm your eligibility for the Northumbria pathway directly with SGU when you apply.

Which Track You Enter On

SGU offers four entry tracks into the MD program, each designed for a different academic starting point.

  • Four-year MD: For students with a completed pre-medical undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or a related science field
  • Five-year MD track: For students with A-levels, IB, or equivalent qualifications with strong science subjects
  • Six-year MD track: For students who have completed Class 12 with science subjects
  • Seven-year MD track: For students who need foundational science preparation before entering the core medical curriculum

Most Indian students entering after Class 12 start on the six-year track. Students with a BSc or pre-medical undergraduate degree may qualify for the four- or five-year tracks. Confirm which track applies to your qualifications at the time of application.

Accreditation and What It Means for Where You Can Practice

For any international medical university, accreditation is the single most important thing to check. It determines whether your degree lets you sit licensing exams and practice in your target country. SGU's credentials are solid.

  • Grenada Medical and Dental Council accredited and recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). WFME recognition is the international standard medical councils use to assess whether a degree qualifies a graduate for licensing
  • CAAM-HP accredited: the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Health Professions, which is what allows Caribbean medical graduates to sit the USMLE and practice in the US
  • Largest single provider of doctors into first-year US residencies for over a decade
  • 804 US residency positions secured in 2026 across 23 specialties
  • 89 percent US residency placement rate for international graduates over the last five years
  • SGU graduates have practiced at every hospital on the US News and World Report 2025-26 Best US Hospitals list

What the Degree Actually Costs

The full cost of an SGU medical education is significant. Most promotional content around Caribbean medical universities glosses over the price. The numbers below are the total program costs, not annual fees.

Tuition fees for 2025-26 (total program cost):

  • Four-year MD: USD 374,986 (approximately Rs. 3.56 crore)
  • Five-year MD track: USD 418,370 (approximately Rs. 3.97 crore)
  • Six-year MD track: USD 461,754 (approximately Rs. 4.39 crore)
  • Seven-year MD track: USD 505,138 (approximately Rs.4.80 crore)

These figures cover tuition and administrative fees across the full program. Living expenses in Grenada or the UK add approximately USD 14,937 to USD 28,452 per year to the total. For a six-year MD-track student, the total cost, including living expenses, can exceed Rs. 5.5 crore.

Currency note: 1 USD = Rs. 95.09 as of May 12, 2026. Always verify the current rate before making financial decisions.

Scholarships available:

SGU offers merit-based scholarships, including the SGU Medical Scholar Award for high-achieving international applicants, with India explicitly listed as an eligible market. Scholarships are awarded at the time of admission and disbursed during the MD program. They reduce the cost but do not cover it in full. Ask specifically about India-market scholarship availability when you inquire.

Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students

Academics:

  • Minimum 80 percent in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 for the six-year track
  • Pre-medical undergraduate degree holders may qualify for the four- or five-year tracks

NEET: SGU's official position is that NEET is not required for international admission to the MD program. Indian students do not need a NEET score to apply. That said, verify this information directly with SGU at sgu.edu, because NMC recognition requirements for graduates returning to practice in India are a separate matter from SGU's admission criteria.

English proficiency:

Indian students from English-medium institutions may be exempt from the language test requirement. Confirm directly with SGU.

Clinical Training: The Part That Shapes Your Career

The first two years at SGU are spent in basic sciences at either the Grenada or UK campus. After that, students move to affiliated hospitals for clinical rotations.

SGU has a network of over 75 affiliated hospitals and health centers across the US and UK. Completing rotations in the US is a genuine advantage for students targeting USMLE and US residency programs, because residency program directors look for US hospital experience when evaluating candidates. The depth of that network is one of the reasons SGU's residency placement numbers hold up year after year.

Three Things to Know Before You Commit

1. The cost is large and mostly loan-financed. SGU is a for-profit institution. Tuition increases year on year. Most students fund a significant portion through loans. Before you commit, work out the full debt load across the program and understand what repayment looks like against a physician's likely starting salary in your target country.

2. One in ten international SGU graduates who apply for US residency do not match. An 89 percent placement rate is strong by Caribbean medical school standards, but it means roughly 1 in 10 international graduates who apply for US residency in a given year do not secure a position. Going into the process with clear eyes about that possibility matters.

3. Returning to practice in India requires additional steps. The National Medical Commission of India assesses international medical degrees separately. Graduates who want to return to India to practice must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or the National Exit Test (NExT). If practicing in India is your goal, factor this requirement into your decision from the start.

Is SGU the Right Path for You?

SGU makes strong sense if practicing in the US or UK is your goal, you did not secure a government MBBS seat in India, you have the financial capacity to fund or finance a degree in the Rs.4 to Rs.5.5 crore range, and you are committed to the licensing exams that follow graduation.

It is not the right path if you primarily want to return to India and practice here, if financing this amount of debt is not realistic for your family, or if you have not yet exhausted domestic NEET counseling options.
