What is the SBW Berlin Scholarship exactly?

The SBW Berlin Scholarship is a unique scholarship that supports international students who are academically excellent and deeply committed to giving back. Unlike most scholarships, it prioritizes social impact, offering full financial support to those who aim to use their education for meaningful change in their home countries or within Germany.

Whether you're studying economics, education, engineering, or the arts, this scholarship doesn't just open doors to Berlin's classrooms; it equips you to open doors for others when you return.

Why it Stands Out

  • Covers tuition fees for your entire degree

  •  Provides a furnished room in a student flat in Berlin

  • Offers a monthly living stipend of EUR 480 (~INR 45,000)

  • May contribute to travel costs to and from Berlin

  • Focus on students from developing or transition countries

  • Selection based on academic merit, financial need, and social engagement

You need to note that you can’t just apply by filling out a form. A non-profit organization or social institution must submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf. SBW Berlin is looking for those who have already made an impact and want to make more.

Are You Eligible?

Here are the criteria:

  • You’re aged 18–30
  • You have experience (volunteer or professional) in the non-profit or social sector
  • You haven’t lived in Germany for more than 18 months
  • You’re applying before or during the early stages of your studies (up to the 3rd semester)
  • You plan to return home to contribute to your country, or engage in charitable work in Germany
  • You can demonstrate financial need and academic promise (GPA equivalent of 2.0 or better in the German system)
  • No immediate family members living in Germany permanently

How to Apply?

Here’s how the process works:

  1. Secure a letter of recommendation
A recognized non-profit or social institution (ideally one you’ve worked with) must email a recommendation on your behalf to application@sbw.berlin.

  2. Get shortlisted
SBW Berlin will share the official application form link if your profile stands out.

  3. Prepare your documents
    • Academic records and GPA proof

    • University entrance qualification

    • Household income information

    • Proof of university admission (if available)

    • Project description (2–5 pages about how you plan to make an impact)

    • Optional: Language certificates, additional letters, internships/work experience documents
  4. Apply separately to a university
You must independently apply to a university or Fachhochschule in Berlin or Potsdam. The scholarship and university application are separate.

Why This Scholarship Matters

At a time when global education often feels out of reach, SBW Berlin offers a rare blend of accessibility, purpose, and prestige. It’s more than a financial grant; it’s a belief in your vision for the world.

If you're a dreamer with a mission, this is perfect for you.
