IIM vs Study Abroad: Which Is Actually Harder to Get Into? The 2026 Data for Indian Students
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Indian students sit for CAT. Most of them do not get into an IIM. Not because they are not intelligent, but because the numbers make it structurally near-impossible for most applicants regardless of effort.
The top IIMs have acceptance rates between 0.12% and 1.22% for general category candidates. The top global business schools, INSEAD, London Business School, NUS, and RSM, have acceptance rates between 18% and 35%.
That is not a small difference. It is the difference between a system where nearly everyone is rejected and one where one in four or five well-prepared candidates succeeds.
Here is the actual comparison across acceptance rates, costs, salaries, and career outcomes.
Currency note: 1 USD = ₹95.46 | 1 GBP = ₹127.67 | 1 EUR = ₹112.65 | 1 SGD = ₹72.10 as of June 15, 2026 (BookMyForex). Always verify before financial planning.
IIM vs. Global MBA: The Acceptance Rate Reality
IIM Admissions in 2026
The top 10 IIM acceptance rates were between 0.12% and 1.22% for general category candidates out of all those who applied, based on IIM admission data from the 2026-28 batch.
- IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta: IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta demand 99+ percentile for general candidates. IIM Ahmedabad has hiked its qualifying cutoff from 80 to 95 percentile, the biggest jump at any IIM in recent years.
- Total CAT 2025 appeared: 2.58 lakh candidates
- Total IIM seats across all 21 IIMs: Approximately 5,500
- Effective general category seats: Significantly fewer after Government of India reservation norms for OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD categories
CAT score alone does not decide admission. Every IIM uses a composite score including Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks, work experience, academic diversity, and gender diversity. Two candidates with the same percentile can get entirely different results.
Achieving 99+ percentile means performing in the top 1% of 2.58 lakh test-takers, then clearing a composite scoring process, then WAT-PI. The funnel has multiple stages, each eliminating the majority of remaining candidates.
Top Global Business Schools
The acceptance rates across the world's top business schools typically range from 18% to 35%.
Institution | Global Rank | Acceptance Rate |
| INSEAD (France/Singapore) | FT #2, QS #8 | ~30% |
| London Business School | FT #4, QS #6 | ~20% |
| HEC Paris | QS #5, FT #6 | ~18% |
| IESE Business School | FT #4 | ~26% |
| NUS Business School | FT Top 15 | ~25-30% |
| RSM Erasmus | QS #3 Masters | ~35-40% |
| ISB Hyderabad | FT #12 | ~20-25% |
These acceptance rates apply to completed, competitive applications. A well-prepared Indian applicant with strong GMAT, relevant work experience, and a clear narrative has a meaningfully higher real-world probability than the headline number suggests.
IIM acceptance rates are calculated against all CAT applicants, including millions who are not competitive candidates. Even accounting for this, the probability of success at a top global school is structurally higher for a well-prepared Indian student than the probability of IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore admission.
The Cost Comparison
IIM Fees (2026)
- IIM Ahmedabad PGP: Rs.27 to Rs.32 lakh for the full program
- IIM Bangalore: Rs.25 to Rs.28 lakh
- IIM Calcutta: Rs.24 to Rs.27 lakh
- New and Baby IIMs: Rs.12 to Rs.20 lakh
- Most students fund through education loans at 10-12% interest. Total repayment including interest for a top IIM typically reaches Rs.35 to Rs.45 lakh
Top Global MBA and Master's Fees (2026)
- INSEAD: EUR 107,500 (approximately Rs. 1.21 crore) including living costs
- London Business School: GBP 73,000 to GBP 95,000 (approximately Rs. 93.20 lakh to Rs. 1.21 crore)
- NUS MBA: SGD 99,953 (approximately Rs. 72.07 lakh) for 17 months
- European master's (Germany, Netherlands, France): EUR 0 to EUR 5,000 per year at top-ranked public universities
- ISB: Approximately Rs.40 to Rs.45 lakh
Global MBA programs cost more upfront. Scholarships reduce this gap significantly for strong applicants. European master's programs at globally ranked institutions often cost less than an IIM MBA when total investment is compared honestly, particularly for STEM students in Germany or the Netherlands, where tuition is near zero.
The Salary Comparison
After IIM
- IIM BLACKI average domestic salary: Rs.25 to Rs.35 lakh per annum
- Top domestic packages: Rs.50 to Rs.70 lakh at consulting, tech, and finance firms
- International placements: Rs.80 lakh to Rs.1.5 crore equivalent for a small percentage
- IIM Kozhikode ranked #3 globally for salary increase at 216%. IIMI ranked #4 at 200%
After Top Global MBA or Master's
- Post-INSEAD or LBS median salary: EUR/GBP 90,000 to 120,000 (approximately Rs.1 to Rs.1.33 crore) in Europe
- US M7 MBA, Indian alums in US tech/consulting: USD 175,000 to 220,000 base (approximately Rs.1.67 to Rs.2.10 crore)
- NUS MBA: Median approximately USD 120,000 for Asia-based roles
- Return-to-India premium: 10-20% above domestic market rates after 3-5 years of international experience

Who Should Consider Which Path
IIM makes more sense if:
- Your career goal is squarely within India's domestic job market
- You plan to work in Indian companies or sectors where the IIM brand carries maximum weight
- You are a genuinely competitive CAT candidate with realistic mock scores to back it up
Study abroad makes more sense if:
- Your CAT results have not reflected your actual ability despite consistent preparation
- Your career goals include global companies, international exposure, or long-term settlement abroad
- You are in STEM or technology, where European master's programs offer EUR 45,000-58,000 starting salaries at near-zero tuition
- You want a business education, but the total IIM investment is a financial stretch; RSM, IE Business School, and multiple European programs offer globally recognised degrees at significantly lower cost
What the Numbers Actually Mean
The IIM acceptance rate is not a measure of academic difficulty in the way most people interpret it. It is a measure of extreme applicant volume competing for a very small number of seats in a system that has not scaled proportionally with India's growing graduate population.
A student with a 720 GMAT, four years of work experience, and a clear narrative for a London Business School application has a realistic 1-in-5 chance of admission. The same student with a 96 percentile CAT and identical work experience has, statistically, roughly a 1-in-100 chance at IIM Ahmedabad.
Both paths are competitive. One is structurally more accessible for a well-prepared Indian applicant than the other. Which one is right for you depends on where you want to build your career, not which brand sounds most impressive.
