How to Switch from the Graduate Route to a Sponsored Job in the UK: The Complete 2026 Guide
You graduated. You applied for the Graduate Route visa. It was approved. Two years remain until your unsponsored status expires, with the countdown starting from the day your visa was granted, not from when you find a job.
The Graduate Route is not a settlement pathway. It is a job-search window. Most successful conversions share one pattern: they treated the Graduate Route as a deadline to work backward from, not a benefit to relax into.
Currency note: 1 GBP = Rs. 128.84 as of July 28, 2026 (BookMyForex/eurochange interbank rate). All salary figures are gross annual amounts before UK Income Tax and National Insurance.
What the Graduate Route Is and What It Is Not
What it is:
- An unsponsored post-study work visa. You can work for any UK employer in any role without a job offer or employer sponsor.
- Currently, the duration is 2 years for bachelor's and master's graduates (for applications submitted before December 31, 2026). 3 years for doctoral graduates.
- From January 1, 2027: 18 months for master's and bachelor's graduates. 3 years for a PhD are unchanged.
What it is not:
- A settlement pathway. Time on the Graduate Route does NOT count toward the 5-year ILR qualifying period.
- Extendable. Once it expires, you switch to another visa or leave.
- This is a reason to delay the job search. The window runs continuously whether you work or not.
The Four Requirements for Switching to Skilled Worker
You can switch from Graduate Route to Skilled Worker inside the UK; you do not need to return to India. Four conditions must all be met.
1. Your employer holds a valid sponsor license
This is the single most important filter in your job search. An employer not on the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors cannot sponsor you, regardless of what they offer.
Check before applying: gov.uk/government/publications/register-of-licensed-sponsors-workers
The register is publicly searchable. If a company is not on it, do not apply expecting sponsorship.
2. Your role meets RQF Level 6
Your sponsored role must be at RQF Level 6 (degree level) or above. Software engineering under SOC 2134 is fully eligible. Since July 22, 2025, the Skilled Worker visa requires Level 6 regardless of salary. Students who accept roles in customer service, hospitality, or general administration cannot switch to a skilled worker from those roles, even if the salary clears the threshold.
3. Your salary meets the threshold
You must meet the higher of two figures: the general threshold (GBP 41,700) or the going rate for your SOC code.
New Entrant Rate: If you are switching directly from a Graduate Route or Student visa, you qualify as a New Entrant. This reduces your floor to 70% of the going rate.
You qualify as a new entrant if:
- You are switching from a student or graduate route visa (within 2 years of expiry).
- You are under 26 years of age.
- You are working toward a recognized professional or chartered qualification.
The New Entrant rate lasts a maximum of 4 years, including time already spent on student and Graduate Route visas.
Going rates by tech specialization (2026):
Specialisation | SOC Code | Going rate | New Entrant floor | INR equivalent (going rate) |
| AI/ML Engineering | SOC 2133 | GBP 54,900/year | GBP 38,430/year | Rs. 70.73 lakh/year |
| Data Engineering/MLOps | SOC 2133 | GBP 54,900/year | GBP 38,430/year | Rs. 70.73 lakh/year |
| DevOps/SRE | SOC 2139 | GBP 52,300/year | GBP 36,610/year | Rs. 67.37 lakh/year |
| Cybersecurity | SOC 2135 | GBP 48,500/year | GBP 33,950/year | Rs. 62.49 lakh/year |
| Backend/Full-Stack | SOC 2134 | GBP 49,400/year | GBP 34,580/year | Rs. 63.65 lakh/year |
| General minimum | All SOC | GBP 41,700/year | GBP 33,400/year | Rs. 53.72 lakh/year |
4. B2 English proficiency
From January 8, 2026, all new Skilled Worker applications require B2-level English across all four skills. If you completed your UK degree, this requirement is automatically satisfied. You do not need to retake IELTS.
Why Graduate Route Holders Are Easier to Sponsor Than Candidates Applying From India
Employers often assume hiring a Graduate Route holder is cheaper than sponsoring from India. It isn't; the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) still applies. Home Office guidance excludes Graduate Route permission from the Student-visa ISC exemption, so converting a Graduate Route holder generally costs the same as any other sponsorship:
- Small/charitable sponsor: £480/year
- Medium/large sponsor: £1,320/year
What actually differs isn't the cost; it's the risk:
- No blind hire. The employer has already seen 6–12 months of real work before committing.
- No entry-clearance risk. The candidate is already in the UK, no overseas visa refusal risk, no biometric wait.
- Faster process. In-country switching typically takes 3–8 weeks, with fewer relocation logistics.
Step-by-Step: The Switching Process
Step 1: Find an employer on the Register of Licensed Sponsors
Filter every job application against the Register. Apply directly to in-house graduate schemes, not through recruitment agencies, which primarily serve mid-level and senior candidates.
Employers that sponsor holders of the Indian Graduate Route include:
- Big Tech: Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple (primarily London hubs).
- Fintech and banking: Revolut, Monzo, Wise, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs.
- Scale-ups: Zalando UK, Celonis, Personio, Checkout.com.
Step 2: Receive an offer and confirm the CoS details
Once you have a job offer, confirm the following details with your employer:
- The job title and SOC code on the Certificate of Sponsorship.
- The stated salary on the CoS must meet the GBP 34,580 New Entrant or GBP 49,400 standard.
- The role must be at RQF Level 6 or above.
The CoS and your employment contract must match exactly. Discrepancies cause refusals.
Step 3: Apply for the Skilled Worker visa (in-country switch)
Apply online at gov.uk. Processing takes 3 to 8 weeks for an in-country switch.
Application fees (2026):
- Visa application fee: GBP 827 (up to 3 years) or GBP 1,636 (over 3 years).
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 1,035/year. For a 3-year visa: GBP 3,105.
- Total approximate cost for a 3-year switch: GBP 3,932 to GBP 4,741 (approximately Rs. 5.07 lakh to Rs. 6.11 lakh).
Documents required:
- Valid passport.
- Certificate of Sponsorship reference number (from your employer).
- Bank statements showing sufficient funds.
- TB test results (Indian applicants).
- Proof of English: Your UK degree certificate.
Step 4: Record your Skilled Worker approval date
Your 5-year ILR clock starts here. Time on the Graduate Route does not count. Record this date precisely.
The Timeline: Working Backwards from Your Deadline
Month | Action |
| Graduation month | Apply for the Graduate Route immediately. Do not delay. |
| Months 1 to 2 | Begin applying to sponsor-licensed employers. Filter every application against the Register. |
| Months 3 to 6 | Contract or internship roles at licensed employers build UK experience and conversion probability. |
| Months 6 to 12 | Target conversion to a permanent sponsored role. The internship-to-conversion pipeline is the most reliable route. |
| Months 12 to 18 | The latest safe window to have a CoS issued and application submitted (for a 2-year Graduate Route). For the 18-month Graduate Route from Jan 2027: compress to months 8 to 14. |
What Happens If You Are Laid Off on Skilled Worker
Your employer must notify the Home Office within 10 working days of your employment ending. The Home Office then sends a curtailment letter shortening your visa to 60 days from that letter's date.
Do not wait for the letter to start acting. Begin your next job search on the day your employment ends. 60 days is not a comfortable buffer when a new CoS takes 2 to 4 weeks and visa processing takes 3 to 8 weeks.
The Route to ILR
The Graduate Route was the bridge. The Skilled Worker visa is the main road. ILR is the destination.
ILR after 5 continuous years on the Skilled Worker visa:
- No more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period.
- Must meet the full going rate or general threshold for ILR. New Entrant discount does not apply.
- Must pass the Life in the UK Test.
- English: CEFR B2 required (from March 26, 2027, up from B1).
Note on proposed changes: The UK government's May 2025 White Paper proposed extending ILR from 5 to 10 years. As of July 2026, the proposal has not been legislated. Verify at GOV.UK before making long-term plans.
British citizenship: Eligible 12 months after ILR. India does not allow dual citizenship, so you would surrender your Indian passport. An OCI card provides lifelong visa-free access to India.
The One Thing That Kills Graduate Route Conversions
Accepting a role below RQF Level 6 during the Graduate Route does not end your unsponsored status immediately. The problem arises when you try to switch: the role you hold at that point must be at RQF Level 6. Students who spend 12 to 18 months in customer service or hospitality and then try to switch discover that their role is ineligible.
Stay in or adjacent to your target specialization throughout the Graduate Route, even in an entry-level or contract capacity.
