Chinese Study Visa 2026: The Complete Guide for Indian Students
Chinese universities offer affordable fees, world-class education, and English-medium programs in MBBS, engineering, business, and AI, while the government actively works to increase the number of international students each year.
But first, every Indian student must get a Chinese study visa.
This guide covers everything you need to know. What type of visa do you need? What documents to collect. How the application works. What happens when you land? And the mistakes that catch students out every single year.
India Does Not Get Visa on Arrival for China: Start Here
This is the most important thing to establish before anything else.
Indian citizens are not eligible for a visa on arrival in China. You must have a valid Chinese visa before leaving India. There is no eVisa option either. Every Indian student planning to study in China must apply in person at a Chinese Visa Application Service Center before travelling.
There are no shortcuts and no exceptions for students. Plan your visa timeline before you plan your flight.
X1 or X2: Which Visa Do You Actually Need?
The Chinese student visa is called the X Visa. It comes in two types, and choosing the wrong one causes serious problems.
X1 Visa: For Long-Term Study (More Than 180 Days)
This is the visa almost every Indian degree student needs.
- The X1 visa covers degree programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs; research; or long-term language studies
- It is a single-entry visa that gets you into China once
- Once you enter China on an X1 visa, you must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival
- The Residence Permit then replaces your visa and allows you to travel in and out of China freely for the full duration of your studies
X2 Visa: For Short-Term Study (180 Days or Less)
- For short courses, semester exchanges, summer programs, or language courses under six months
- The X2 visa is a short-term non-convertible visa. A holder of an X2 visa is allowed to enter China once and stay for a maximum of 180 days
- No Residence Permit required after arrival
The simple rule: Full degree or any program longer than six months means X1. A short exchange or language program under six months means X2. Get this wrong and you will face immigration complications on arrival.
The Two Documents Your University Sends You: JW201 and JW202
Before you can apply for your visa, your Chinese university must send you two critical documents. Without both of these, your application cannot move forward.
Admission Notice
Original Admission Notices are required for student X1 and X2 visa applications. The university admissions team will send the soft copy to your registered email address once prepared, and will normally send the hardcopy to your mailing address after it is printed and stamped.
JW201 or JW202 Form
This is the official Visa Application for Study in China form. You do not fill this in yourself. It is generated by your Chinese university after your admission is confirmed.
- JW201 is for students studying in China on a full or partial scholarship. JW202 is for self-sponsored students.
- The university will help you apply for the JW202 form once you are accepted to the program or after your deposit or tuition fee payment is confirmed.
- You will receive an email with instructions to download and verify your form. For best results, download and verify your JW form using a laptop or desktop; the Study in China portal is not reliably compatible with mobile devices.
Important: Your university will send your documents by courier such as DHL, FedEx, or EMS. This typically takes 1 to 3 weeks from China. Track the shipment and collect it promptly. Do not apply for your visa until both originals are in your hands. Photocopies alone are not accepted.
Documents Checklist: What to Bring to the Visa Centre
Required for all X visa applicants:
- Original passport with at least 6 months' validity and at least one blank visa page, plus a photocopy of the bio page
- Completed China Visa Application Form (COVA), filled online, printed, and signed; handwritten forms are not accepted
- One recent passport-sized colour photograph with a white background, 48 mm × 33 mm, no glasses, neutral expression, taken within the last 6 months.
- Original Admission Notice from your Chinese university plus a photocopy
- Original JW201 or JW202 form plus a photocopy
Additional documents for X1 Visa only:
- Physical Examination Record from a hospital designated by the Chinese Embassy in India
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds for your studies. Most universities and embassies expect CNY 40,000 to CNY 60,000 per year, which works out to approximately Rs. 5.24 lakh to 7.87 lakh at current rates
- Scholarship Award Letter: If you are on a government or university scholarship
- Health insurance documentation if required by your university
(Currency note: INR conversions are calculated at 1 CNY = Rs.13.11, as of April 9, 2026.)
The Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Wait for your university documents to arrive: Do not begin your application until you have received both your original Admission Notice and JW form physically. Digital copies are not sufficient.
Step 2: Fill the online COVA form: Go to cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn and complete the application form online. Print it, sign it by hand, and bring the signed printout to the center.
Step 3: Book your appointment: From November 2023, the requirement for a pre-booked appointment was removed at all three Chinese Visa Application Service Centers in India. You may submit on any working day during submission hours. Check the center's official website for current hours before visiting, as hours vary by location.
Step 4: Choose the correct visa center: There are three Chinese Visa Application Service Centers in India, and you must use the one that covers your state.
- Kolkata: Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal
- Mumbai: Maharashtra and Karnataka
- New Delhi: all other states Applying to the wrong centre can cause delays or rejection
Step 5: Submit in person: Attend your appointment with all originals and photocopies. Applicants must submit documents for a visa in person. Biometrics, including fingerprints and a photograph, will be captured during your visit.
Step 6: Pay the fee and keep your receipt: China visa fees start from Rs.2,900 for a single entry visa. VFS and logistics charges are Rs.2,018 per person for normal processing and Rs.2,974 per person for express processing.
(Note: These fees reflect the reduced rate extended by the Chinese Embassy. Verify current rates at the official Embassy Charging Standard page before applying)
Step 7: Collect your passport: Standard processing takes 4 to 7 business days. Express processing takes 2 to 3 days. Rush processing takes 1 day, with both faster options available for additional fees.
When to apply: At least 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Not more than 3 months in advance, as embassies do not issue visas that far ahead.
What Happens After You Land in China
Obtaining your visa approval is just the beginning. For X1 holders, what you do in the first 30 days after landing matters just as much.
Within 24 hours: Register with local authorities
You must register with your local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Missing this deadline can result in fines of CNY 500 per day, approximately Rs. 6,555 per day at current rates, and creates serious complications with your Residence Permit application.
If you are staying in university dormitories, the international office usually handles this. You have 24 hours to visit the police station on your own if you live in private off-campus housing.
Within 30 days: Apply for your Residence Permit
X1 visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit at the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau within 30 days of entry into China. This is a hard deadline with no grace period.
Documents needed at this stage:
- Passport with X1 visa
- Original Admission Notice and JW form
- Physical Examination Record completed after arrival in China, your university organizes this in your first 1 to 2 weeks, separate from the examination done in India
- Proof of accommodation registration
- One passport-style white background photograph
Residence Permit processing takes 7 to 15 business days. You receive a receipt that allows you to stay legally in China while it is processed. Once issued, the Residence Permit allows multiple entries into China for the full duration of your studies without needing a new visa each time you travel home.
A Note on the Medical Examination: Two Stages, Not One
This stage is where Indian students get confused most often. There are two separate medical examinations in this process.
Before leaving India: You complete a Foreigner Physical Examination at a hospital designated by the Chinese Embassy. This is submitted as part of your X1 visa application. The examination form is valid for only 6 months, so time this carefully so it remains valid when you arrive in China.
After arriving in China: China requires a health re-examination after arrival. Your university will organize this in the first 2 to 3 weeks. Bring your original examination form and vaccination records from India. If your results are consistent, the re-examination is quick. If you do not bring your home records, you will have to redo every test from scratch.
Both examinations are required. Neither is optional for X1 visa holders.
Mistakes That Cost Students Time, Money, and Sometimes Their Place
These are avoidable errors that happen every year. Know them before you begin.
- Applying too close to your departure date. Give yourself at least 4 to 6 weeks. July and August are peak application seasons, and processing is significantly slower.
- Submitting photocopies without originals. Chinese embassies require originals of your Admission Notice and JW form. Photocopies alone are not accepted.
- Name mismatches between documents. Ensure the name on your admission documents, JW form, and passport match exactly. Bring official name-change records if your passport name has changed.
- Missing the 30-day Residence Permit deadline. This is a serious immigration violation. Do not assume your university will remind you in time.
- Missing police registration within 24 hours. The fine is CNY 500 per day (approximately Rs. 6,555 per day), and it delays your Residence Permit.
- Using a phone to download your JW form. The Study in China portal is not reliably compatible with mobile devices; use a laptop.
- Not making copies before submission. Make two photocopies of every document before submitting. Keep one set with you during travel and another in a separate bag. Save digital scans to your phone and cloud storage.
