Sabanci University Opens Fully Funded Master's and PhD Scholarships for Indian Students in 2026-27
Turkey is not the first country most Indian students think of when planning a postgraduate degree abroad. That gap in attention is worth closing. Sabancı University in Istanbul ranks 404th globally in QS 2026 and among the top 5 institutions in Turkey and offers a fully funded scholarship for international graduate students covering tuition, accommodation, and a monthly living stipend. No separate scholarship application needed.
Applications for the 2026-27 academic year are open now. The graduate deadline is August 10, 2026.

What Sabancı University Is
Sabancı was founded in 1999 on a self-contained campus in Tuzla, on the Asian side of Istanbul. It is not a large state university. It is a private research institution with a deliberately interdisciplinary structure: undergraduate students spend their first year exploring multiple disciplines before committing to a specialization. That structure is unusual in the Turkish system and genuinely changes what the first year of a degree feels like.
Here is where it stands:
- QS World University Rankings 2026: 404th globally, among the top 5in Turkey
- Times Higher Education 2026: Ranked 351–400 globally
- Students from over 60 countries on campus
- English is the medium of instruction across all graduate programs. No Turkish language requirement for most courses
- Research-intensive faculty with strong industry connections across engineering, natural sciences, management, and social sciences
The campus has dormitories, sports facilities, labs, and student services all in one place. For Indian students, studying in English without a language barrier makes Sabancı considerably more accessible than most European universities that require proficiency in the local language.
The Scholarship and What It Covers
Every international student who applies to Sabancı is automatically evaluated for a scholarship during the admissions process. No separate form. No separate deadline. No extra steps. You apply for your program, and the scholarship committee reviews your profile at the same time.
For most graduate students, the scholarship covers the following:
- Full tuition fee exemption: 100 percent of annual tuition fees waived entirely
- Monthly living stipend: TRY 22,000 per month for Master's students (approximately Rs.46,420), paid for 10 months of the academic year, totalling approximately Rs.4,64,200 per year
- Free on-campus dormitory accommodation for the full duration of the program
PhD students receive the same base structure: a full tuition waiver and complimentary dormitory accommodation. However, monthly stipend amounts are variable and are explicitly confirmed through faculty evaluation based on departmental budgets, research grants, or academic performance.
The Distinguished Science and Technology Scholarship considers PhD candidates in the Graduate School of Engineering and Natural Sciences with exceptional academic credentials for a higher-level award through a separate evaluation in addition to the standard review. If you are applying for a PhD in ENGS with a strong research profile, ask about this award specifically when you apply.
The Part Most Scholarship Blogs Skip
Automatic consideration does not mean automatic award. This point is worth stating directly.
- Scholarship decisions are based on academic merit. Transcripts, reference letters, test scores, and evidence of academic achievement beyond grades (competition prizes, research publications, Olympiad certificates) all factor in
- There are a limited number of scholarships across all graduate programs. A large, competitive international applicant pool means meeting the eligibility criteria is necessary but not sufficient
- Scholarships are awarded by the admission jury and finalized by the board of the relevant graduate school. Different faculties have different standards and different levels of competition
Sabancı's automatic consideration mechanism means you do not waste effort on a parallel application. But a stronger academic profile produces a meaningfully stronger scholarship outcome.
Programs Open to International Students
All three graduate schools teach primarily in English. Here is what is available:
Graduate School of Engineering and Natural Sciences:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering

Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities:

For Indian students, the Engineering and Natural Sciences programs and the Business Analytics and Finance tracks align most directly with both Indian graduate profiles and post-graduation career pathways in Turkey and Europe.
Deadlines to Know
Graduate (Master's and PhD), Fall 2026 entry:
- August 10, 2026, final application deadline (for non-thesis programs)
- Early to mid-June 2026, final deadline (for thesis programs)
Graduate, Spring 2027 entry:
- Deadlines typically fall between December 2026 and February 2027. Confirm with your specific program directly
One thing Sabancı makes clear: Scholarship allocation happens during the admissions review. Applying earlier gives the committee more time to evaluate your file properly. Submitting two to three months before August 10 is meaningfully better than submitting on the day.
What Your Application Needs
All applications go through the official Sabancı admissions portal at admission.sabanciuniv.edu. No agent process required.
For Master's applications:
- Online application form completed in full
- Official undergraduate transcripts with English translation if not originally in English
- Undergraduate degree certificate
- GRE or GMAT scores: Where required, check your specific program's requirements at admission.sabanciuniv.edu as this varies by school and program.
- TOEFL iBT (minimum 78). Sabancı University also accepts PTE Academic (minimum 48), Cambridge C1 (Grade B), and Cambridge C2 (Grade C) for English proficiency, while IELTS and Duolingo are not recognized.
- Two to three reference letters from academic or professional supervisors
- Statement of Purpose covering your research interests and reasons for choosing the program
- Passport copy
For PhD applications, add:
- A research proposal outlining your intended research focus
- Evidence of research experience: publications, conference presentations, or thesis work
Two things to check before you upload: documents not in Turkish or English must have a notarized translation, and transcripts must carry a wet signature, stamp, or verifiable electronic signature. Unsigned digital scans are rejected.
Istanbul and Why It Changes the Calculation
Istanbul is one of the rare cities that genuinely belongs to more than one part of the world. Istanbul has Europe on one side and Asia on the other, with deep connections to the Middle East and Central Asia woven through its culture, economy, and professional networks. For Indian students, it offers a kind of international breadth that is different from what studying in Western Europe or North America produces.
On the practical side:
- Living costs are significantly lower than Western Europe. Monthly student expenses in Istanbul for food, transport, and personal items run approximately TRY 15,000 to TRY 25,000 (Rs. 31,650 to Rs. 52,750), manageable alongside the monthly stipend
- Turkey's economy has growing demand for STEM graduates, finance professionals, and management talent, particularly in manufacturing, banking, energy, and technology
- Location advantage: A short flight puts Sabancı graduates within reach of European, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian job markets simultaneously
- Post-study work: Turkey offers a residence extension for graduates who secure employment. Sabancı's industry partnerships provide a real placement pipeline, not just a career services page
Before You Apply
The automatic scholarship evaluation makes the application simpler than most scholarships. Your outcome depends on what you put into it: the quality of your transcript, the specificity of your Statement of Purpose, the strength of your references, and any academic achievements beyond your GPA.
For Indian students, the GRE or GMAT requirement is the step with the longest lead time. If you have not taken either test yet, you need 2 to 3 months of preparation before August 10. Start that process now.
