WES GPA Calculator
If a university in the USA or Canada asks for a WES evaluation, the GPA on that report is not something you can work out with a simple formula like "percentage divided by 25". World Education Services (WES) converts every subject on your marksheet into a US letter grade, gives each grade its grade points, and then averages them by credits. This WES GPA calculator follows the same method, using the grade scale WES itself publishes for most Indian universities, so you can see a realistic estimate before you pay for an evaluation.
What is a WES GPA?
A WES GPA is the grade point average shown on a WES course-by-course evaluation. It expresses your Indian results on the US 4.0 scale, where 4.0 is an A and 0 is a fail. Universities that ask for a WES report use this number to compare you with applicants from other countries.
- It is calculated from your individual subject marks, not from your overall percentage or division.
- Each subject is converted to a US letter grade (A, B, C or F) and then to grade points (4, 3, 2 or 0).
- The grade points are averaged, weighted by the credits of each subject.
How WES Converts Indian Marks to US Grades
WES does not use one formula for the whole world. It studies how grades are actually distributed in each country and at each institution, and sets a conversion scale from that. For a typical Indian university that marks out of 100, WES publishes the following scale:
Marks (%) |
Indian Classification |
WES Grade |
Grade Points |
|---|---|---|---|
70 - 100 |
First Class with Distinction |
A |
4.0 |
60 - 69 |
First Class |
B |
3.0 |
50 - 59 |
Second Class |
B |
3.0 |
35 - 49 |
Third / Pass Class |
C |
2.0 |
0 - 34 |
Fail |
F |
0.0 |
Two things stand out in this scale:
- 70% is already an A. Indian universities mark strictly, and a 70 is a distinction. WES reflects that, so every subject at 70% or above earns the full 4.0.
- Everything from 50% to 69% is a B. A 52 and a 68 earn the same 3.0. Pushing a 62 up to 68 does not change your WES GPA, but pushing a 68 up to 70 does.
Why other calculators show a lower number: many online WES calculators use an American-style scale where only 85% or more counts as an A, and 70% is a B. That scale was never designed for Indian marking, and it can understate an Indian student's WES GPA by half a point or more. The calculator on this page uses the Indian scale from WES's own published material.
How to Calculate Your WES GPA
You can do this by hand in four steps, which is exactly what the calculator above does for you.
Step 1: List every subject and its marks
Take the percentage for each subject from your semester or annual marksheets. If a subject is marked out of something other than 100, convert it to a percentage first: marks obtained ÷ maximum marks × 100.
Step 2: Convert each subject to a WES grade
Use the table above. A 74 becomes an A (4.0), a 63 becomes a B (3.0), a 45 becomes a C (2.0).
Step 3: Multiply grade points by credits
If your marksheet shows credits, multiply each subject's grade points by its credits. A 4-credit subject at A gives 4 × 4 = 16 quality points. If your marksheet has no credits, give every subject a weight of 1.
Step 4: Divide by total credits
- Formula: WES GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
Example of a WES GPA Calculation
Priya has these results in one semester of her B.Sc.:
Subject |
Credits |
Marks |
WES Grade |
Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Mathematics |
4 |
81% |
A (4.0) |
16 |
Physics |
4 |
58% |
B (3.0) |
12 |
Chemistry |
3 |
65% |
B (3.0) |
9 |
English |
2 |
72% |
A (4.0) |
8 |
Total |
13 |
45 |
- WES GPA = 45 ÷ 13 = 3.46
Now compare that with converting her credit-weighted average directly. Her average is about 69%, which on its own would be a B and a GPA of 3.0. Converting subject by subject gives her almost half a point more, because her 81 and 72 each count as a full A. This is why the subject-wise tab of the calculator is more accurate than the quick estimate.
Subject-wise vs Quick Estimate: Which Tab to Use
- Subject-wise marks is the method WES uses. Use it whenever you have your marksheets. Add credits if your marksheet shows them; leave them blank if it does not.
- Quick estimate converts only your overall percentage. It is useful for a first idea, for example when you only remember your aggregate, but it can be off by half a point in either direction.
If you only need a general 4.0-scale conversion rather than a WES estimate, use our percentage to GPA calculator or CGPA to GPA calculator. For a US-style GPA from grade points and credits, use the GPA calculator.
When Do You Need a WES GPA?
- US universities: many graduate schools accept your Indian transcripts directly, but some ask for a WES course-by-course evaluation, especially for scholarships, assistantships or state universities with fixed GPA cut-offs.
- Canadian universities and colleges: some admissions offices ask for a WES evaluation to check minimum GPA requirements.
- Professional licensing and employers: licensing boards in fields like accounting, engineering and teaching often require a course-by-course report.
- Canada PR (Express Entry): this needs an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), which is a document-by-document report. It confirms what your degree is equivalent to in Canada, but it does not show a GPA.
Document-by-Document vs Course-by-Course Evaluation
WES offers two main types of evaluation, and only one of them includes a GPA.
Evaluation Type |
What It Shows |
Includes GPA? |
|---|---|---|
Document-by-Document |
Your credentials and their US or Canadian equivalent |
No |
Course-by-Course |
Every subject with its US grade and credits, plus an overall GPA |
Yes |
If a university asks for your "WES GPA", it needs the course-by-course report. Always check which one the university or employer wants before you apply. For fees, required documents and timelines, read our guide to WES evaluation for Indian students.
Limits of This Estimate
This calculator gives a realistic estimate, but your official WES GPA can differ. Keep these points in mind:
- Institution-specific scales: the table above is WES's common scale for Indian universities. Some institutions, including many IITs, NITs and autonomous colleges that grade on a 10-point scale with letter grades, are converted using their own scale.
- Credits: WES assigns US credit values based on your programme. If your marksheet has no credits, the calculator weights every subject equally, which may differ slightly from WES.
- Failed and repeated subjects: WES works from your full academic record. Failed attempts and backlogs can appear on the report and can lower the GPA, even if you later passed.
- Scales can change: WES updates its methodology from time to time. Only the official course-by-course report is final.
