The thing that helps me to concentrate on my work is meditation. I have been doing this meditation for 5 years. It started when I was doing my first year UG degree. This was taught me by my professor and since then I have been practicing this meditation all throughout my life. I wake up at 5 am every morning and I spend about half an hour in meditation. This helps assist me to concentrate in my work and keeps me active throughout the day. Sometimes when I missed this meditation, I felt some uneasiness within me. I was confused and couldn't schedule my things properly. Since then I never missed this meditation. I make sure that before getting out to work, I do meditation. It really helps me to get inner peace and strength.

Something that helps me concentrate while working is something called the Pomodoro technique. This is when you use 25 minutes to study and then five minutes on break. Now I've adjusted this technique to be one hour of studies and 10 minutes of break. The reason this technique works is actually something I've learned in psychology. It's called interference and this happens because you study too much content in too short of a time and it blocks your recall ability. So Pomodoro allows you to study and focus for a short period of time and then unwind your brain so you can actually process information better. There's also been studies to show that sleep helps with processing. So it's important to get good quality sleep before an exam so you can recall better. The technique works on the same principle. I think it's really good because it prevents your brain from getting overburdened and you from getting burnt out fast. So I can work longer amounts of time and study a range of content without ever feeling like my body is lagging behind because I'm able to keep up with the frequent breaks and then the breaks I can eat and replenish my energy or I can go on the phone and talk to people and this will increase my mood and serotonin levels so when I go back to studying I'll be more focused and concentrated.

Follow up questions

How did you first learn about the Pomodoro technique?
I first learned about the Pomodoro technique from a productivity workshop I attended online. The instructor explained its benefits and how to implement it effectively. I was intrigued by the idea of structured breaks and decided to give it a try in my study routine.

What other techniques do you use to improve concentration?
In addition to the Pomodoro technique, I also use mindfulness meditation and create a distraction-free environment. I find that taking a few minutes to meditate helps clear my mind, and having a tidy workspace minimizes distractions, allowing me to focus better on my tasks.

How do you ensure you get good quality sleep?
To ensure I get good quality sleep, I maintain a consistent sleep schedule, avoid screens before bedtime, and create a relaxing bedtime routine. I also make sure my sleeping environment is comfortable and dark, which helps me fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed.

When I was a kid, I had a little pencil box which had these four buttons which gave the pencil box an operative use. When you press the button, the box would open up. When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

Answer

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

Something that I do that helps me concentrate on my work is making a to-do list in the morning. I generally use my mobile phone to make a to-do list. How it helps me is because it helps me manage my time better. I used to actively do it during my fellowship with Teach for India. In fact, a senior at work taught me how to make an effective to-do list along with units of time mentioned along with it. It helps me keep on task throughout the day and keeps me away from any distractions. Since I chart my time right at the beginning of the day, I am able to devote an equal amount of time to different activities and ensure that I don't waste a lot of my work time doing things which may not be urgent or not be important. An extension to a to-do list is the Urgent-Important Matrix which I learnt about very recently. I haven't started using it but I think I will start using it very soon. It helps me categorize my tasks into tasks that are urgent and important, tasks that may be urgent but are not important, tasks which are not urgent and neither are they important and the last category of tasks which may be important but can be put off for later. I feel this will eventually help me to organize my day better so I know which tasks are on priority and which one can be put on the back burner for later and there can be certain tasks which I can delegate to my team and not to them myself.

Follow up questions

How do you prioritize tasks in your to-do list?
I prioritize tasks by assessing their urgency and importance. I usually tackle the most urgent and important tasks first, ensuring that I meet deadlines and focus on high-impact activities. This way, I can manage my workload effectively and reduce stress.

What other methods do you use to minimize distractions while studying?
Besides making a to-do list, I also use techniques like setting specific time blocks for focused work, turning off notifications on my phone, and creating a quiet study environment. These methods help me maintain concentration and enhance my productivity.

Have you noticed any changes in your productivity since using a to-do list?
Yes, since I started using a to-do list, I've noticed a significant improvement in my productivity. I feel more organized and less overwhelmed, as I have a clear plan for the day. This structure allows me to accomplish more tasks efficiently and with less stress.

Life has become so fast paced these days that it often feels like there is too much to do and not enough time. So concentrating on one thing and doing it well has become quite a challenge. Over time I have tried many techniques to help me concentrate. Sometime I take a power nap and other time I practice yoga. However, one method that has worked wonders for me is brisk walking. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or unable to concentrate, I go out for a brisk walk in the park opposite my house. This simple activity helps me sweat out my worries and stress. I feel very light and refreshed. I feel that I can tackle tasks with full concentration. My cousin, who is a physiotherapist, explained the science behind this exercise. Aerobic exercises such as brisk walking release androphins, a chemical in the brain that makes you feel good, a happy and relaxed mind in turn makes it easier to focus. I often do brisk walking in the evenings or during breaks when I am studying for long hours, especially around exam time. Sometimes, instead of going to the park, I simply take a few rounds on my terrace. This brief activity is enough to re-energize me and improve my focus. Walking has additional benefits as well.

Follow up questions

What other activities do you think can help improve concentration?
Besides brisk walking, I believe activities like meditation, reading, or even listening to music can enhance concentration. Each person may find different methods effective, but engaging in activities that calm the mind or stimulate it positively can be beneficial.

How do you manage your time while studying or working?
I use a combination of time management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, where I work for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. This helps me stay focused and prevents burnout. I also prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance.

Have you noticed any changes in your productivity since you started these techniques?
Yes, since incorporating brisk walking and other concentration techniques, I've noticed a significant increase in my productivity. I can complete tasks more efficiently and with better quality, as my mind feels clearer and more focused after these activities.

So, today's topic given to me is describe something that you do that can help to concentrate on work or study. Anything that we want to concentrate on work or study is the first thing, foremost thing is the focus and the interest. So, either to work or study, we first need to have a plan of action that means that leads to the end results. What is our aim? Why are we doing that? Why are we studying that? Why, what would be the action plan and how we need to do it? So, the first and foremost thing, once we draft the plan of action, the first step is to, the second step is follow it rigorously. On daily basis, say for example, if you would like, if we have trying to prepare an IELTS exam and we plan to take the exam within 3 months, which is 90 days, so each day we need to segregate the plan where we have 4 topics that would prepare a plan for each topic when we want to write the, write the, take lot of test that would help and so which will help you to attain the goal.

    Band 6-7

It is making a to-do list. It helps me stay motivated during work or study because whenever I look at my to-do list I feel like I should work even harder to you know take those things off my list and I do this whenever I feel overwhelmed with tasks and it has helped me a lot. It's been my companion through tough times and that's a trick or technique that I use and I will continue to use it. I also use the Pomodoro technique which is taking breaks for you know active recall. It's also a great thing to do when you're not distracted and are not able to focus and work properly. So those are the two things that I do. There are a lot of other techniques like the Feynman technique when I teach someone else while studying or while working. So those are the techniques that I use while studying and these are the techniques that have helped me a lot as a person as well.

    Band 6-7

Well, if I talk about the concentration, I feel that I can build my concentration by listening to music. Of course, music makes me feel relaxed to concentrate more on my work. Like on a daily basis, I usually listen to music when I do coding because I have no homes in the Plum Village area where I have to code on a daily basis. So it takes a lot of concentration to create new ideas and to think about new innovative ideas. So I sit in a place where all the colleagues are working and having some gossips. Whenever I want to get rid of that gossips, I just put on my earphones and listen to the music. It depends if my mood is good, I would like to listen to some cheering music. But when I am feeling low, I love to listen to emotional music, which distracts me from the things going on around me and makes me concentrate on my work. I think it's about two years from when I am listening to music. I am in practice of doing my work by listening to music. One of my friends, he used to do the same. He used to just put on his earphones and do his work. And I asked him, how can you do it? And he asked me to try. From that day, I feel that music helps me a lot to build my concentration. So it's a good practice for me.

As I am a civil engineer, I have to come across a lot of calculations and complex design procedures which need more focus on my work. Two years ago, I was facing such an issue at my office. When I discussed about this issue with my aunt, she is a nun. She suggested me a technique. She told me to take a break between your long working hours. I have been following this technique since the last two years. It helped me a lot in my work. I have started taking small breaks which last for 10-15 minutes in between my work hours. At that time, I listen to my favorite parts of music. I also keep a small book with me which I read in between those break times. It helped to boost my brain and it helped in increasing my productivity at my workplace. I started concentrating more on my work than before. It resulted in my promotion finally. I got promoted to project manager because of my excellent work in different projects. I am so happy that I am following this technique to increase my concentration on my work.

    Band 6-7

These days people are leading a more stressful life and it is unable for them to concentrate on the particular work they are doing. From time past few days, I was also suffering from the same problem that I was not able to concentrate on what I was doing. So I got a solution from a very good friend of mine when I discussed about my problem with her. She told me that to concentrate on what you are doing, you should start meditation. So by acting upon her advice, I started doing meditation and a few days back I started this meditation with the help of my friend. She guided me that how to start doing meditation because for the first few days, it was very difficult for me to sit at one place while closing my eyes because there was some kind of interruption and some kind of disturbance around me because of my little daughter and she continuously come to me to distract me and to call me, but then she advised me that we should do meditation in a very lonely place without any interference or distraction. So I started doing meditation in a park in the morning after doing a morning walk. Now I am much capable of doing meditation for 15 to 20 minutes and I have seen a very positive results of it and now I am not distracted easily by other things and I can concentrate on what I am doing and can do and also it has a very positive effect.

One thing that helps me concentrate on my study is taking a short break and going for a walk. It helps my mind rest a little. Like when I am studying for a long time, my mind gets tired. Taking a short break and going for a walk helps me refresh my mind and it's also good for my body. Like sitting for a while can make my body stiff and going for a walk stretch my legs and make me feel better. And even if I am studying for a long time, I could not understand anything, so going for a walk helps me feel better. When I go for a walk, I notice everything in nature like sky, birds, clouds, etc. And it makes me feel relaxed.
