So, back in 10th grade, I used to have this badminton racket of mine, which was a very prized possession. And me and my friend, we used to go and play badminton every evening. So one of the days when we were in a game, he was using my racket, and the game was very disappointing and we lost the game very badly. So in that instance, he got angry and in that aggravation, what he did was, he hit the racket to the ground and he broke the racket. Initially for me, looking at that sight was very disappointing because we had already lost the game and he had destroyed one of my most prized possessions at that time. I didn't know how to react because we were all enraged of the loss. And then looking at my racket being shattered into pieces, it just broke me. And I had to take some time to myself to assess what had happened. And then I went and spoke to him, asking him, why did he do this? Because it was very clear that he was enraged that we lost the game, which was the feeling that even I had at that point. But that sadness and because I was upset, I could not have a fight with him because that friend of mine has been there for a very long time, and he's still a friend of mine. And what helped was the fact that me not reacting badly that day has helped me hold that friendship close to my heart. And physical and material objects, they come and go, but the bonds stay. So what I learned was that even if he broke the racket, he got me a new racket the next week. So it was very sad that something that I held very close to my heart was not there. But yeah, I still have my friend. So that was a good experience.

Follow up questions

How did you feel when your friend broke your racket?
I felt a mix of disappointment and sadness. Losing the game was tough, but seeing my prized racket broken was even worse. It was a moment of shock, and I needed some time to process my feelings before addressing it with my friend.

What did you learn from this experience?
I learned that material possessions can be replaced, but friendships are more important. It taught me the value of patience and understanding in a friendship, especially during tough times. Maintaining that bond was more valuable than the racket itself.

Did this incident change your relationship with your friend?
Not at all. In fact, it strengthened our friendship. We talked about it, and he even replaced the racket. It showed me that we could overcome challenges together, and that our friendship was resilient enough to handle such incidents.

So, there was this time when I was in class 9 and my dad had gifted me an expensive toy which I had bought to the school to show my friends. My friend sat beside me and we were playing games and studying in the class, whereas in between we got the time to go for a break and eat some food. After we ate our food, we came outside and we were playing with the toy I got. So, I showed him the toy I got. It was an expensive Lego toy and seeing him, he got happy and when I was playing with him, he tried to pull it from me. And when he pulled it from me, in that reality, I thought, yeah, I'll give it to you. Just wait a bit of time. But he was like, no, I need it right now. So, I was like, okay, give me two minutes. But he just didn't wait and he pulled it and it broke into pieces. My heart that time shattered because I was thinking what will I tell my parents, what will my parents think, what do I tell him right now, how expensive was it. But I was furious at that time, but I had to forgive him. So, after the next day, I apologized and I told, yeah, it's okay. It's cool. You don't have to worry about it.

Follow up questions

I felt really upset and angry at first because it was a gift from my dad and quite expensive. I was worried about how to explain it to my parents and what they would think. It was a mix of emotions, but I knew I had to handle it maturely.

What did you learn from this experience?
I learned the importance of communication and patience. It taught me to express my feelings better and to be more careful with my belongings. I also realized that accidents happen, and it's essential to forgive friends when they make mistakes.

Have you ever damaged something that belonged to a friend?
Yes, I once accidentally spilled juice on my friend's book. I felt terrible about it and immediately apologized. I offered to replace it, and thankfully, my friend was understanding. It made me more cautious around others' belongings in the future.

When I was a kid, I had a little pencil box which had these four buttons which gave the pencil box an operative use. When you press the button, the box would open up. When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

Answer

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

Actually, three years back, one of my friends visited me at my house and he came along actually to have a dinner, a work dinner. And while he was rounding around the house to see the rooms, the kitchens, the living room, accidentally he hit one of the frames, image frames at my house and it fell down and broke into pieces. That image was for my former daughter who passed away five years ago and it was the only memory left from here.

Follow up questions

How did you feel when your friend broke the frame?
I felt devastated and heartbroken. That frame held a very special memory of my daughter, and losing it was like losing a part of her again. I had to take a moment to collect my thoughts and emotions before addressing the situation with my friend.

Did your friend apologize for breaking the frame?
Yes, he was very apologetic and felt terrible about what happened. He didn't realize the significance of the frame to me until I explained it. He offered to help replace it, but I told him that it couldn't be replaced, as it was a unique memory.

How did you cope with the loss of that memory?
It was tough, but I decided to focus on the happy memories I had of my daughter instead of the loss. I also created a small memorial space in my home to honor her memory, which helped me cope with the grief and keep her spirit alive.

What did you do to repair or replace the damaged item?
After the incident, I took my broken spectacles to an optician to see if they could be repaired. Unfortunately, the damage was too severe, so I had to buy a new pair. It was a bit disappointing, but I learned to be more careful with my belongings.

Have you ever accidentally damaged something belonging to a friend?

So my friend who had borrowed my tape recorder wanted to record a competition and listen to the song over and over again, to which I agreed. And when I received my tape recorder, I found that it was damaged with the keys popping out and I was unable to play my tape recorder at that point of time. When I had opened up my tape recorder, I found that the tape was strangled in and I had really hard time removing the tape and its contents from the particular slot that it was placed in. One of my friends got my favorite plate to eat. That friend ate the entire food in the plate, enjoyed it, relished the food, appreciated my mother for her food. And once she was done with her lunch, while she was getting up, she put her hand inside the plate by mistake, which resulted in the plate flipping over and dropping on the floor and breaking. This really disheartened me because that was my favorite plate since childhood. Besides, she did apologize for it and I did forgive her for the mistake that she made.
