I would like to talk about an item which was broken and later I replaced it, it is none other than a wooden clock in my home, it's not just a clock for me, it's an emotion which is really priceless for me because this wooden wall clock is gifted by my grandmother on my 18th birthday, so it was really special for me, actually the clock was in our home for over past years and she told me that it's a part of our family's history, so she always told me to serve it without any damage, but one day when I checked the time, it's not working, so I think the battery is not working, so I changed the batteries, but later also it's not working properly, so I found that the internal system was damaged and so I felt really sad and I take it and I went to a local repair shop near my home and the mechanic really checked the clock and he told me that the system was badly damaged due to age of the clock and with his hard work, he really checked the clock and he repaired it in a good manner and now the clock is really working and I feel really happy because as I mentioned earlier, it was not just a wooden clock for me, it's an emotion, it's a part of my family, so I am so happy to get back my clock to normal level.

What other sentimental items do you have in your home?
I have several sentimental items, including a photo album filled with family pictures and a quilt made by my grandmother. Each item carries memories and stories that connect me to my family history, just like the wooden clock.

How do you feel about repairing items instead of replacing them?
I believe repairing items is often more meaningful than replacing them. It allows us to preserve memories and maintain a connection to our past. Plus, it can be more environmentally friendly, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Have you ever tried to repair something on your own?
Yes, I once tried to fix a broken chair in my home. I watched some online tutorials and managed to reassemble it. Although it wasn't perfect, I felt a sense of accomplishment. It taught me the value of learning new skills and being resourceful.

The object in my house that got broken and is now fixed is a mirror. In my home, we have this huge mirror in front of our basin and it's in a pretty central area of the home. This let me start by describing how it was broken. This happened many years ago when my brother and I, who were quite young at the time, were playing cricket inside the house despite my mother warning us not to. And my brother threw a ball at me and I hit it and accidentally ended up hitting the mirror. In my defense, it's the easiest thing to break, yet I felt terribly guilty for doing it. Sadly, it remained broken for a very long time because it was then that we realized how scarily expensive mirrors actually are. How we got it fixed was pretty straightforward because there was no other way than just to get a person who could simply exchange the entire mirror. There was no way to get just one part of it fixed. So we went to the shop and got the same mirror in the exact same size and shape that could fit the same place and just replaced the old one with it. It cost us quite a lot. Thankfully, it looks and feels exactly the same, but yet my brother and I felt pretty guilty after it and stopped playing inside the house ever after.

Follow up questions

How did your family react to the broken mirror?
My family was quite upset when the mirror broke. My mother was particularly frustrated because she had warned us not to play inside. We all felt guilty, especially my brother and I, as we knew it was our fault. It was a lesson learned about being careful in the house.

What other items in your home are valuable to you?
In addition to the mirror, we have a family heirloom vase that is very valuable to us. It has been passed down through generations and holds sentimental value. We also have some artwork that we cherish, as it represents our family's taste and history.

Have you ever repaired anything else in your home?
Yes, we have repaired several things in our home. For example, we once had to fix a broken chair that my dog chewed on. We managed to replace the legs and reupholster it. It was a fun project that brought the family together, and now it looks as good as new.

When I was a kid, I had a little pencil box which had these four buttons which gave the pencil box an operative use. When you press the button, the box would open up. When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

Answer

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

What do you think is the most common item that gets broken in a home?
In many homes, items like dishes, electronics, or furniture often get broken. Dishes are fragile and can easily chip or break, while electronics can malfunction or be dropped. Furniture can also suffer from wear and tear, especially if it’s moved around frequently.

How do you usually feel when something in your home gets broken?
When something breaks at home, it can be frustrating and stressful. It often leads to inconvenience, especially if it's something essential. However, it can also be an opportunity to upgrade or improve the item, which can be a positive aspect.

Have you ever tried to repair something yourself? How did it go?
Yes, I have attempted to repair items like furniture or small appliances myself. Sometimes it goes well, and I feel accomplished, but other times it can be challenging, and I end up needing professional help. It’s a learning experience either way.

When I was a kid, my brother used to study all the time. He is 5 years older than me. So I had no one to play with. So I would play in the living room with a small ball. I would throw it at the wall and then it would bounce back and I would catch it. So while I was playing that, I accidentally threw it too high and it hit the tube light. The tube light was broken and the glass shards fell down. My dad heard about the noise and he came and he just looked at me. He made sure that I was okay. Then I remember he picked up the pieces of glass, put it in the dustbin, threw them in the dustbin. Then he went out to buy a new tube light. Instead of the traditional tube light that I have seen, the same pattern and everything, he bought a new tube light that just needs to be stuck on the wall, which was very new for me as a child. The first thing he did was he removed the old tube light, the broken tube light. He switched off the electric supply, removed the tube light and then he placed some holders on the wall. Using the holders, he placed the tube light on the holders, connected the tube light to the socket and then he switched it on. I think I was pretty impressed by it. He did it all by himself.

Follow up questions

How did you feel when the tube light broke?
I felt a mix of fear and guilt because I knew I was the one who broke it. I was worried about getting in trouble, but also relieved that my dad was calm and focused on fixing the problem.

Have you ever repaired something yourself?
Yes, I have. A few years ago, I repaired a broken chair in my house. I used some wood glue and clamps to fix it. It was satisfying to see it back in good condition, and it made me appreciate the effort that goes into repairs.

What other repairs have you seen done at home?
I've seen my dad fix various things around the house, like leaky faucets and squeaky doors. Each time, I was amazed at how he could troubleshoot the issue and find a solution. It inspired me to learn more about home repairs.

Follow up questions

What other appliances have you had to repair in your home?
In addition to the washing machine, we had to repair our refrigerator last year. It was leaking water, and we called a technician who fixed the issue by replacing a faulty part. It was a bit expensive, but it was necessary to avoid further damage.

How do you usually decide whether to repair or replace a broken item?
We usually assess the cost of repair versus the cost of a new item. If the repair cost is more than half the price of a new one, we consider replacing it. We also think about the age of the item and how often it has needed repairs in the past.

Have you ever tried to repair something yourself? How did it go?
Yes, I once tried to fix a small leak in our kitchen sink. I watched some online tutorials and managed to replace a washer. It was a bit challenging, but I felt accomplished afterward. However, for more complex issues, I prefer to call a professional.

When I think about something that was broken and needs to be repaired, I can only think about the electronic devices as they do have a shorter lifespan and they do come with warranty but I would like to talk about my television which was bought almost 5-6 years back. It was a gift from my aunt on my father's, on my parents' anniversary. So it was really special to us. Also, it is a habit for all of us in our family to binge watch our TV, mostly at nights. Like my grandmother, she used to like watch Indian dramas and my father liked watching history channels and most of them. But once my younger brother was playing with two of his friends and by mistake the ball hit the television and it broke. We had a little discussion in the family that we should get a new one and replace this one or it should get repaired. But at last we thought that this TV could work more years with us and we thought of getting it repaired. We did call an electrician. He did make few changes, replaced few of the parts. Few parts were difficult to find but we paid him extra and he did find them. So at last the TV did get repaired but nowadays everyone is more careful about it and the children's playing in that area has been restricted to avoid any further financial disruptions. Yes, so this is the one that happened with us.

The thing that broke in my home was my kitchen blender. I used it quite often to make smoothies, so when it suddenly stopped working, I was really quite frustrated. The blender broke because it had been used for a long time without any maintenance. So one day I was making a smoothie with some frozen fruit and ice, and the motors might have just burned out, and it didn't respond. I tried to turn it on again, even though it failed. At first I wasn't sure what to do. I thought of buying a new one, and then I decided to see if it could be repaired because it wasn't very old. I took it to an electronics repair shop nearby, and the electrician told me that the problem was actually a small part inside that had come loose. So he replaced it with a new one, and it didn't take long, and I was able to get it back the same day. I felt pretty relieved when I got the blender fixed because it saved me the cost of buying a new one. I could continue using it as it was before, plus I felt happy that it was an easy fix rather than something more complicated. The repair was really affordable and cheap, and I also learned to be more careful while using it in the future. I was a little worried about not overloading it with too much frozen fruit overall. I felt quite satisfied with the repair and was happy that I didn't have to waste money on my new appliance.
