Recently I happened to be at a departmental store near my house and I found a lost child. She was searching for her guardian and she was I think about four to five years old. I could tell she was lost by how she was wandering. Initially when I did see her in the aisle she was roaming around very happily. Two minutes later I see her like you know running in panic. I realized okay she's lost and mind you this is a huge store and she doesn't remember where she lost her guardian. I think it was her mom that was with her but I'm not so sure. I happened to go talk to her. Luckily I knew her native language and I spoke to her in her own mother tongue. Sat down with the girl got her a candy and I told her okay calm down you know I'll be able to find them. If not anything we can go to the departmental store, the owner and they'll make an announcement and we'll be able to find your parent. She described whom she was with and where she saw them and luckily they were in the same floor that day. They were also frantically walking around just looking for their child and about 10-15 minutes of searching later I found them and the child was so grateful. She came and hugged me and she introduced me to her guardian and said this is Akka which is in Kannada. It's a term for sister and it's a common thing to call even strangers Akka. It's a respectful term that can be used and she introduced me to her mom and she got a savoury packet, a chips packet out of her mom's shopping cart and she gave it to me and said thank you for helping me and then cutely walked away. It was something that really warmed my heart.

I would like to describe a time when I helped a child. It's not only about one child, it's a group of childs that are actually located in an orphanage. So the moment was like my husband's birthday and it was January 28, 2025. So I planned something different than usual and I decided to go to the orphanage and give something special to the kids. It was like a special dinner and some clothes for them and finally a few money, how much I can contribute that I contributed as a donation. So that was the best thing and that was the help what I can do I did when his birthday happened. So I am also engaged or I am also participated in that moment and it was like a surprise. Surprisingly, I invited him to there and we celebrated his birthday there and in front of all those kids we gave them bulk of chocolates and whatever they want, whatever they like, I gave them. So that was the good moment I want to share and people have to do this kind of help at least once in a year because we are wasting our money for lot of unwanted things but at least once in a year we have to spend our money for this kind of things.

Follow up questions

What motivated you to choose the orphanage for your husband's birthday celebration?
I wanted to make his birthday special by sharing it with those in need. It felt meaningful to celebrate in a place where we could bring joy to children who might not have much. I believe that giving back is important, and it was a great way to combine a personal celebration with helping others.

How did the children react to the gifts and the celebration?
The children's reactions were heartwarming. They were excited and grateful, and their smiles were priceless. It was touching to see them enjoy the dinner and the chocolates. Their happiness made the day even more special for us, and it reminded us of the impact we can have on others' lives.

Do you think helping children in need should be a regular practice for everyone?
Absolutely! I believe everyone should contribute to their community in some way. Helping children in need not only supports them but also enriches our own lives. It fosters empathy and awareness of social issues, and I think it’s essential for building a compassionate society.

I don't remember exactly. I think it's in my B.Tech first year. After completion of my second semester lab examinations, I was heading towards my home. And there is a change in between the college and my home. So when I was riding on my bike, there was a boy who was riding on a cycle. So a man who was driving very recklessly on his car. And I think he was drunk and I don't know exactly. Hit the boy and ran. It's a hit and run case. And the boy was bleeding out. I was like scared a lot and I don't know what to do. The only thing I can do is carrying him to a nearby hospital. And it took me a while to grab some bravery. And furthermore I have carried him on my shoulders to the hospital which was a kilometer away from the spot where he had an accident. And then I and hospital staff called his parents. And they are very thankful to what I have done. And the main reason I helped him was humanity. Basically humanity was really very needed in our day to day life. So as we are advancing in technology, people lack humanity. But as a responsible citizen of India, I need to help. That's my responsibility.

I believe that empathy and a sense of responsibility motivate people to help others. Many individuals feel a natural urge to assist those in distress, driven by compassion and the understanding that we all share this world and should support one another.

Yes, I have encountered situations where I felt compelled to help others, whether it was assisting someone in need or volunteering in my community. Each experience reinforces the importance of being proactive in helping those who are vulnerable.

There were several instances when I helped small kids but to be specific I want to talk about two years back when there was a carnival in my hometown which held every year after Holi. And so two years back I went to that carnival to enjoy myself and to just experience new rides and to buy new apparel. As I was playing a lot of games there enjoying myself I saw a small child and he was sobbing and shedding tears and I felt that he might be lost so I went to him and asked that hi kid what are you doing so he said I'm lost I need to find my mother. So I took him along with me and I went to announcement center and I said that just make an announcement for Sourav that please take him from the announcement center but they said that there is a technical issue in the speaker so it will take up to 10 to 15 minutes to fix it. So I decided to take Sourav with me to Mickey Mouse and Giant Wheel and after spending some time there he was happy and I was happy too as I got a company of a small child. And soon after when I went back to the announcement center his mother was standing there in a chance she might find him at the announcement center. So she hugged his child and he was happy and her mother was also happy and she thanked me that thanks for taking care of my child and I appreciate your work and I also felt that it was a good decision.

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

Recently, when I was on my way to work, I saw a helpless child standing in a platform near the road. So I approached the child because the child was not having anyone beside her. So when I approached her, I came to know that she was lost. She wandered away from her parents. Hence, I took her to the nearby police station and we registered a complaint and the police contacted her parents and then the child was safely held back, given back to the parents.

A time when I helped a child, it was recently when a few days back there was a festival of Diwali and during festivals the mall, I went to a mall with my friends and malls are always packed during those days because the people, because the stores and the showrooms have heavy discounts and deals going on for peoples as well as people usually enjoy to go out to mall for shopping and movies because they are free and have no work to do. So when I was in the mall with my friends, we were just on the ground floor when I heard a little girl crying and she was just wandering here and there and calling up for her mother and father like she was crying and shouting. So I told my friends that I think she is lost and we immediately went to her and asked her what has happened. So she told us that she has lost her way and she is not able to find her parents because of the crowd. So we asked her if she knew any phone number, if she remembered any of that but she didn't and however it was difficult to ask for her help from anyone. So we took her and we took her to few stores but we couldn't find her parents. So we eventually announced on the mic that this girl named so-and-so Adadya is in a blue cloth, blue frock to be precise, has been lost and is searching for her parents. If her parents are listening, we may come to this shopper's shop and we took her, we even fed her ice cream and we took her to the shopper's shop and we waited. So eventually her parents came and they were very worried.

This was almost 6, 5 to 6 years ago, when I used to come back from my tuitions, when I was in the 10th grade, I used to see a small boy around 6 or 7 years of age, would be studying under the street light, it would almost be around 6, 7 pm, just as it would start getting dark, he would sit under the street light and he would be studying. I saw him for a week straight while coming back from my tuition and I would just wonder how hard it must be to have nothing but still try to work as hard as possible and achieve whatever he aims to. It made me question so much about my own integrity and how ungrateful I can be sometimes, even though I have everything that I need, I still feel like there is something that is lacking or there is something more that I could have. But one day something changed in me, while coming back, we had an eye contact, the boy and I and I just, I was drawn to him, I went, I sat with him for a while, spoke to him, he told me he was in the 2nd grade and had his exams coming up, he did not have a proper pen, he did not have any stationery for that matter, he was reading under the street light, he did not have warm clothes, so I decided to use all my pocket money to buy him some stationery, get him good clothes and help him out with his studies, so I helped him out for a week and he ended up doing well in his studies.

Then, I talked to him, I helped a child last week sometime inside the park when I was working. Kid fell down all of a sudden and he started crying. Then, immediately I rushed to him and made him to get up and sit on the bench. Then, I was talking to him, what happened? Then, I was telling, I saw whether he got any injuries or anything, then all was okay. Then, I told him nothing happened, he can relax for some time and then he can go back and play. That's how I made him feel comfortable and go back and play regularly. Then, I sat with him for some time till he gets relaxed. After some time, he went for play and then I started walking around again. I continued with my walking. That's it.

Basically, as a child specialist pediatrician, we do have emergency duties every month. So, recently during my night duty, I remember this child was brought in a very bad condition with breathlessness due to hypoxia, child had acute exasperation of asthma, so we need to help him with oxygen.

I helped a child few years ago because he needs my help in his studies. So I tried to make him study the topics which are very important for his exam. And I provided him my help through my experiences in studies. Eventually it was helpful for him and he thanked me at last of his exam days. So I think I did a good job at that. Thank you for watching!
