SAT Reading Practice 2027: Digital SAT Format, Sample Questions and a Prep Plan for Indian Students

The SAT is College Board’s undergraduate admissions test, scored out of 1600, with reading and writing making up half that total. Until 2023, Indian students took a paper-based version of the SAT that included a standalone 65-minute reading section and five long passages. That format is gone.

College Board moved all international students to the Digital SAT in March 2023. The paper version stopped running worldwide in December 2023. Reading and writing are now one combined section, taken on a laptop inside the Bluebook app.

A lot of prep material has not kept up. Old books and coaching notes still describe the five-passage format, and students who train on those walk into the digital test and discover it entirely different. Here is what actually changed:

Three things about the new format surprise students:

• Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2. Score well, and the second module gets harder, giving you access to a higher score ceiling. If you score poorly, the second module becomes easier, but your maximum possible score is capped.
• Context switches every minute. Each short passage has exactly one question. You answer and move on. Nothing like sitting with one long passage and answering ten questions.
• Module 1 answers are final. Once you submit Module 1, nothing in it can be changed.

My Insight: Students who train on old-format materials almost always run out of time on the digital test. It has nothing to do with their English level. They just built habits around an entirely different rhythm.

Every SAT reading question belongs to one of four domains. Your score report breaks down your performance by domain after each test, so this is precisely where to look when planning your next practice cycle.

1. Craft and structure is where most Indian students lose marks they weren’t expecting. A question might show you the word “assert” in a sentence and ask which meaning fits this particular context, or it might ask what role one sentence plays in the passage as a whole. Flashcards alone won’t save you here. You need to read for function, not just definition.

2. Information and Ideas is where Indian students typically feel most comfortable. Finding the main point, locating a detail, and drawing a conclusion from a chart. These skills overlap with CBSE and ICSE reading comprehension.

3. Standard English conventions are grammar. Standard English conventions include commas versus semicolons, run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement.

4. Expression of ideas trips up otherwise strong readers. You get a partially written paragraph and must pick the addition that best achieves a stated goal: “Which choice most effectively introduces the claim in the following sentence? ” You’re not fixing grammar. You’re making a rhetorical decision.

My Insight: CBSE and ICSE students usually handle information and ideas well. Expression of Ideas is the painful one: Indian school tests reward detail, while the SAT asks you to pick one sentence that does one specific job.

The best SAT reading practice comes from the Bluebook app and Khan Academy Digital SAT and both are available for free. Here is a craft and structure sample showing what a typical SAT reading question looks like today.

Passage:

Marine biologist Wren Calloway spent a decade tracking a single pod of orcas off the Pacific coast. Her peers dismissed her early papers because they considered long-term individual tracking too resource-intensive to produce reliable data. By her tenth year, however, Calloway’s records had become the most cited dataset in orca behavioral research, a result she attributes more to simple persistence than to new technology.

Question: Which choice best describes the function of the second sentence in the text as a whole?

• A) It undermines Calloway’s claim about the value of her work.
• B) It explains why Calloway’s approach was initially doubted.
• C) It contrasts Calloway’s methods with those of her critics.
• D) It summarises the decade’s technological advances.

Correct Answer: B

Why B works: Read sentence two again. It tells you specifically why her colleagues dismissed her early work: the method was thought to be too costly in resources to give you reliable results. That is a reason for doubt, which is precisely what option B says.

Choice C says she contrasted her methods with her critics. The sentence doesn’t do that; it explains their objection, not a comparison. Choice A says it undermines her claim. Pointing out that people initially doubted her is not the same as undermining her. Choice D brings in technology. Sentence two says nothing about technology at all.

You probably read too carefully and too slowly. The solution is reading the question first, finding the relevant sentence, and answering from there.

Spend your first month doing untimed SAT reading questions by domain, specifically Craft and Structure, before you do any full-length mocks.

Fall 2027 applicants:

Testing in November or December 2026 gives you time to work through Expression of Ideas and Cross-Text Connections before board season locks up your schedule.

My Insight: The fastest fix is also the simplest: only use what the passage says. If an answer needs an assumption the text doesn’t make, it’s wrong. Students who internalise this technique properly can often jump 40 to 60 points in just two weeks.

My Insight: Check your passport expiry before you pay. Students lose their registration seat every year because a passport runs out before test day.

Yes. Reading and Writing is worth 800 of your 1600 points. A weak SAT reading test result pulls your composite down, and that is what most scholarship cutoffs check.

In practice:

• US public universities: Many offer automatic merit aid based on your composite SAT band. Going from 1250 to 1320 can push you into a higher band worth Rs. 4.78 lakh ($5000) to Rs. 19.8 lakh ($20,000) per year.
• Indian private universities: Ashoka, O.P. Jindal Global University, and Shiv Nadar all accept SAT scores for admissions and internal scholarships.
• College Board India Scholars Program: Students from families earning under Rs.8 lakh a year can get a 90% fee waiver and full-tuition scholarships at participating universities. Your SAT exam scholarship eligibility depends on both sections, not Reading alone.

Fall entry (August or September) is the main intake for SAT-based scholarships. US and Indian universities set their scholarship deadlines around it. If you are in Class 12 targeting Fall 2027, your test window is October to December 2026 for US deadlines or March 2027 for most Indian university deadlines.

My Insight: Two mocks a month with proper review beats five in one week. The mock shows you what’s wrong. The review is where you fix it.

If your SAT reading practice score hasn’t moved across three consecutive mocks, more tests won’t fix it. Here is what it does:

Stop the mocks for a week. Go through past errors without a clock. For each wrong answer, write down why the correct choice works. That is where pattern recognition actually builds.

Answer easy questions first. Flag harder ones and return with leftover time. This single habit recovers a surprising number of marks.

Book a later sitting if you are far off target. Three weeks out and 80 points below your goal is a strong reason to postpone.

My Insight: Most 80-point jumps come from cutting easy mistakes, not conquering the hardest questions.

1. Practice on the format you’ll actually sit in. The SAT reading test today uses short passages with one question each, taken inside Bluebook on a laptop. If your practice looks different from that, you’re building the wrong habits.

2. Speed and elimination beat vocabulary. You have roughly 71 seconds per question on average. The students who score highest aren’t necessarily better readers. They’re better at using only what the passage says and cutting answers quickly.

3. This section is half your total score. Because the SAT reading test contributes 800 of your 1600 points, it has an outsized effect on your SAT exam scholarship eligibility. A 60-point improvement here can be the difference between two scholarship bands.
