UC Berkeley SAT Scores: Is It Still Required in 2026-27?

Is SAT required for UC Berkeley admission in 2026-27? No. UC Berkeley SAT scores play no part in the admission decision. Officially, this is called the University of California test-free policy, and it covers every UC campus, not just Berkeley. Test-blind is stricter than test-optional. At a test-optional school, a strong SAT score can still help you if you choose to send it. Under the UC Berkeley test-blind policy, admission officers never see your SAT or ACT score at all, even if you submit one, so it cannot help or hurt your file.

The policy is not permanent. UC’s Academic Senate (through its Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools) is reviewing the testing question and must report a recommendation to the Regents by June 2027; more than 2,300 faculty have signed letters urging reinstatement, citing declines in math readiness. 1. Academic GPA and course rigor. UC Berkeley GPA requirements are evaluated through your 10th and 11th grade marks (and part of 12th, where available), converted from your board’s percentage system, alongside how demanding your course load was relative to what your school offered.
2. Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). You answer 4 of 8 prompts, 350 words each, covering leadership, creativity, challenges overcome, and academic interests.
3. Extracurricular depth, not breadth. Sustained involvement in two or three activities reads better than a long list of one-off certificates.
4. English proficiency scores. This requirement applies to all international applicants, regardless of their board of study.

Counselor insight: Indian applicants often default to listing Olympiad medals or board-exam ranks inside the PIQ, which Berkeley readers already see elsewhere in the file. The stronger PIQs we’ve reviewed spend the 350 words on one specific decision or setback and what the student did next, not on a second resume.

There is no official minimum UC Berkeley GPA requirement published for international applicants, since UC’s holistic review does not use a hard cutoff the way UC Berkeley SAT scores once suggested one existed. Since UC Berkeley SAT scores are not considered, taking the SAT is optional for this specific application. It may still be helpful if:

• You are also applying to US universities outside the UC system that remain test-optional or test-required.
• A strong score could unlock external, non-UC scholarships that ask for test scores.
• You want a score in hand for course placement after enrollment (UC Berkeley allows reporting scores for this purpose only).

If you decide to test, compare the ACT vs SAT formats before committing to one, and check how Indian students typically score on the SAT to set a realistic target. Either way, do not delay your UC application or PIQs while waiting on a test date. UC Berkeley SAT scores will not move your file either way.

Berkeley’s published English-test floor (TOEFL 90, IELTS 6.5) is lower than what makes a file genuinely competitive. Many Indian applicants clear the minimum easily, then find the real bar, especially for the writing component, which sits closer to TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.

UC Berkeley’s acceptance rate has fallen steadily as applications have climbed. Berkeley’s Fall 2025 figure, drawn from its 2025-26 Common Data Set, put the UC Berkeley acceptance rate at 11.4 percent, roughly 14,500 admits out of about 126,850 applicants. For fall 2026, Berkeley’s own reporting put the admitted first-year class at close to 10 percent international, with campus reporting citing an international admit rate of roughly 5 percent, continuing the fall 2025 pattern. This gap exists because of a 2021 state budget deal that required Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego to phase their nonresident undergraduate enrollment down toward an 18 percent cap by the mid-2020s, not because of anything related to UC Berkeley SAT scores.

For Indian applicants specifically, Berkeley’s International Office recorded 779 Indian students in its Fall 2025 International Student Enrollment report, ranking India the second-largest country of origin among Berkeley’s international student population after China. This 779 figure covers Indian nationals across all degree levels (undergraduate, graduate, and exchange combined), not undergraduates alone, and it is a nationality count, not an ethnicity or heritage count, so it does not include US-citizen students of Indian descent. Berkeley does not publish a separate percentage breakdown by country within just its undergraduate international population, so no single “X percent of undergraduates” figure can be reliably quoted from this source.

Always confirm exact dates on UC’s official admissions portal closer to the cycle, since filing windows can shift slightly year to year. Nowhere in this checklist do UC Berkeley SAT scores appear as a required document, so don’t let a pending test date hold up any of the other six steps.
