There have been languages that I have always struggled to learn, such as Spanish, German and particularly French. Now you must understand that when I was in school, I had taken up another third language, which I absolutely failed at. So when I went to college, I had little confidence that I would succeed in learning another language as I thought I was at my linguistic limit. But even though I was scared and I didn't have the confidence I needed, I ended up taking French as my third language. Now French is a complex language. You can't just learn it in a year or two years, but that is what I was tasked with doing as two years is all the course was. I am not ashamed to admit that I did struggle a lot in the beginning. I struggled through the sentence structuring. I struggled through the grammar. My teachers often used to say, you should probably switch to a language that you're more comfortable to so that you don't end up failing the class. And they were right. I did end up failing once. But what that failure taught me was that I needed to get up on my feet and start thinking of ways to improve this. What I ended up doing was utilizing an app called Duolingo to gamify the language learning process. What Duolingo does is it gives you points and rewards based on how well you're able to complete a task in a particular language. So with the help of this app, I was finally able to grasp concepts in a way that I felt I understood more clearly.

One thing I did to learn another language was practicing German through language exchange apps and watching German TV shows. I've always been interested in learning German because it's widely spoken in Europe and is useful in the fields of engineering and technology. To improve my skills, I usually use language apps like Duolingo. This helped me practice conversation and understand how the language is used in everyday situations. Additionally, I watched German movies and series with subtitles, which helped me pick up vocabulary and get familiar with sentence structure and pronunciation. This method was very effective because it combined both structured learning and real-life practice. It improved my confidence, especially in speaking and listening. Certainly, there are different difficulties that I've faced, but I felt really motivated because every time I understood a new word or sentence, it felt like an achievement. It also made me more aware of German culture, which was fascinating.

I faced several challenges, such as mastering the grammar rules, which can be quite complex. I have recently started learning French and my mother tongue is Marathi. So what I do to simplify the learning process is I create code words or find similarities between Marathi or English. I am comfortable speaking English because I have been learning it since I was 4 years old. So I find similarities or words that sound very similar in either of the languages. I use them as code words or I create a storyline which is very random and it usually doesn't make any sense but it's easier to remember what I am learning in French. Learning French makes me feel very proud of myself for some reason and it feels very therapeutic and aesthetically pleasing for my brain. It makes me think that I am a different person, not a different side of myself but I am different from everyone else which is very important when you have low confidence which I do have. So it's sort of an achievement for me.

Follow up questions

One of the main challenges I've faced is the pronunciation of certain French words, which can be quite different from Marathi and English. I try to practice speaking French by conversing with friends who are also learning the language. I also use language exchange apps to connect with native French speakers. Sometimes, I watch French movies or listen to French music to immerse myself in the language and improve my speaking skills.

How has learning French impacted your confidence?
Learning French has significantly boosted my confidence. It makes me feel accomplished and proud of my ability to communicate in another language. This newfound confidence spills over into other areas of my life, helping me to engage more with others and feel more self-assured in social situations.

A new language apart from my mother tongue that I was always keen about learning was French. My school offered to teach us French when I was in 5th grade, so I took it up as my 3rd language apart from Hindi and English. I studied French from my 5th class until my 10th class. The teachers were really good. They taught us with the utmost patience and I really enjoyed studying and learning French. I was almost always a topper during my French exams in all of my classes. After completing my school, I also took up French during my graduation course that was another 4 years, so in total I have studied French for a total of 10 years. Recently I visited to France for a family vacation and I was really grateful that I took up French in my school and college as it really helped with the communication during our trip. It was so much easier to communicate with everyone around in France including the cab drivers, the hotel managers and other tourists also. I am extremely grateful that I took it up as a 3rd language. Even my family was very happy at the time of the vacation that I was so fluent in French that we didn't have any problem during any of our vacation days. Everything went pretty smoothly. Now I also want to learn another language while simultaneously improving my skills in French so that I do not lose touch with it. Another language that I would love to learn is German because the next trip that I am planning as a vacation is to Germany so I really believe that we should keep learning new languages as it helps to vacation around the world.

When I was a kid, I had a little pencil box which had these four buttons which gave the pencil box an operative use. When you press the button, the box would open up. When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

Answer

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

In my opinion, it is important to learn other languages than our mother language. And in my school days, I had different languages like Sanskrit, Hindi and Malayalam as well, our mother tongue. And I was good in Hindi language but I was not able to speak it very well. But my friends used to talk in Hindi like a native speaker. And I asked them, how you learned it this much correctly or fluently, how could you speak it this much fluently. So they didn't tell me anything. And I found a way like I started watching Hindi series. And watching that, I could make my Hindi speaking fluent. In my opinion, everyone should learn other languages other than their mother language. And in my school days, I had different languages like Sanskrit, Hindi and Malayalam as well, our mother tongue. And I was good in Hindi language but I was not able to speak it very well. But my friends will... In my opinion, it is very important to learn other languages other than our mother tongue. And in my school days, I had different languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, English and our mother, Malayalam. That's my mother tongue. And I was good in all languages. But my friends are very good in Hindi language as well. They speak like a native speakers. And I was wondering about that. And I also want to speak in Hindi just like a native speaker. So I found a way like I started to watch Hindi series. That helped me very much. I can speak and I can understand everything in Hindi language. And it helped me in a lot of way. Because my profession is a medical profession. And I need to speak or I want to communicate with other language speakers. And also I worked in another state. And there are also people speaking this language. So this helped me a lot to talk like a native speaker to others.

So, in my early days, I watched cartoons a lot. I spent a lot of time watching TV. So, in that time, we only had one regional cartoon channel, which was called TuttiTV. So, that was a Tamil channel. So, by watching that, I got familiarized with the language, Tamil. Later, I found Tamil as a language which we can express our feelings, love, intensely. It's not like English, Hindi, or like my mother tongue, Malayalam. Tamil is a language which has something we can catch upon. Like, for example, if we say, I love you, the way in Tamil it says more closely, we feel more intimate in that. And, after my graduation, in my workplace also, I had many colleagues who were from Tamil Nadu. So, that learning, that small, small learning helped me to get more involved, have a good chat with these people in their home language. So, they felt comfortable, I felt comfortable. And, regarding learning other languages also, I had a good chance to learn Hindi, Spanish also. So, I am familiar with four languages. I can speak and write the four languages. But, in a sense, Tamil, we need a good poetic, a systematic way of approach. So, I feel Tamil is a good thing that I learned.

The thing which, sorry, I want to go back. The thing which I used to take was writing work and it definitely helped me a lot to improve my language and also my friends. In addition to this, and also my friends who definitely helped me through this journey to learn a language and yeah, now because of them, because of the practice, now I can speak a fluent language, that is Kannada, which is a local language in Karnataka and yeah, about the feel, yes, definitely I feel good, very good, like even speaking English was also a difficult task for me, so this is the second language which I learnt since high school. I was not at all a good fluent speaker and now as the practice goes on, standing in front of the mirror and practicing all the day, it was a good feel to talk about it.

Here I would like to talk about a language I learned from myself by talking to the local people. It is none other than Hindi, our national language. I learned Hindi from my childhood when I was studying in the 5th standard. That was the first time I studied Hindi. The basic level of letters were taught at school. And after that in the high school level we were taught words and sentences. And we could create sentences and how to speak in Hindi. Till 10th standard I studied for 5 years. But after that I quit studying because Hindi was not there in higher secondary school. But when I went to my college days, it was in North India. So I could learn Hindi by talking to the local people over there. So it was easy for me. I don't know how I learned it. Somehow I learned by talking to the people. That was the moment where I felt speaking to the people without taking much effort. We could speak Hindi and it was easy for me to grab the new words... ...and talk like how the local people were talking. Furthermore it helps me to deal with patients at my hospital... ...where we were doing our nursing experience practicals.

Band 6-7

Well, appearing for this examination, English is the second language and my original language which I speak is Hindi. So, for preparation of this language, I had to think a lot about it. First and foremost, I was scared to speak in front of others. I usually, when I am having a conversation with people, I talk normally without thinking much on the ideas and grammar and vocabulary and my pronunciation. It just comes naturally from my mouth. But, when I think a lot about complex ideas like what interesting can I speak about it, it makes me difficult and brings gaps in between. So, I would recommend everyone to take the examination easy. So, it doesn't put much stress on your brain and you speak whatever comes in your mouth naturally. And, it's a very strange feeling when you think it's just a conversation. It makes you easier to speak about the things you already know rather than putting much effort in speaking new words. Additionally, I would like to add that we should be confident enough and think about the expressions more than the words. Learning a new language is a skill and it's also a requirement. Language is a basic idea of having a communication with each other than making it complex by heavily putting a command over it like what do you...
