PhD in UK for Indian Students 2026: Fees & Scholarships

The standard minimum is a master’s degree with at least 60%, equivalent to a UK upper-second-class (2:1). For Russell Group universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, and Edinburgh, the informal bar is 65% to 70% or a distinction. On a 10-point GPA scale, most UK departments equate 7.5 to 8.0 with a 2:1 and above 8.0 with a first.

Indian students from English-medium institutions may be exempt from IELTS. Confirm with the specific department. Where required, the minimum is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0). Top universities typically require 7.0.

Every PhD in UK application requires a research proposal. It must identify a specific, answerable research question; explain the methodology; and show the work is achievable in 3 to 4 years. Length: 1,500 to 3,000 words depending on the department.

Counselor insight: “Machine learning in healthcare” is a topic, not a proposal. “Comparing transformer-based versus CNN architectures for early-stage diabetic retinopathy detection in low-resource Indian clinical settings” is a research question. The difference between those two sentences is the difference between rejection and shortlisting at a Russell Group university.

Step 1: Contact supervisors first (12 to 18 months before start). Email 3 to 5 supervisors with a one-page research summary and CV. Confirm supervisor support before submitting any formal application.

Step 2: Write your research proposal. Spend 6 to 8 weeks on this task. Cover the following sections: research question, literature gap, methodology, timeline, and expected contribution. Have a researcher in your field review it before you send it.

Step 3: Submit the formal application. Once a supervisor backs you, apply through the university portal with semester-wise transcripts, marksheets, a provisional or convocation certificate, an IELTS/TOEFL score, two academic letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a CV, and a funding declaration.

Step 4: Apply for scholarships simultaneously. Commonwealth and GREAT deadlines fall between December and March. These are separate applications from the university. Do not wait for an offer before applying.

Step 5: Apply for UK Student Visa after receiving CAS. You must show maintenance funds: £1,529/month for London or £1,171/month outside London, capped at 9 months, plus unpaid tuition. At Rs.129/GBP, London maintenance alone is Rs.23,80,000 (£13,761); outside London Rs.18,60,000 (£10,539). Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days before the visa application date.

Counselor insight: The 28-day bank statement rule is the most common UK visa refusal reason for Indian PhD students. The required total, tuition balance plus maintenance funds, must not dip below the minimum at any point in those 28 days. A large transfer on day 25 will not work. A parent’s account is acceptable if the relationship is documented and funds have been sitting consistently, not moved in for the application.

Counselor insight: Most Indian families underestimate the 3-year cost by 25 to 30% because they budget tuition alone. The NHS surcharge, visa fees, flights, and exchange rate buffer collectively add Rs.8,00,000 to Rs.15,00,000 over the course of a PhD.

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission: Full international tuition, a £1,452/month stipend (put INR) for scholars studying at UK universities outside of London, and £1,781/month (put INR) for those studying at universities within the London area, return airfare, and thesis grant. Open to Indian citizens who are permanent residents of India with a first-class master’s. Applicants must not have lived in a developed country for more than 12 months in the past 5 years.

Deadline: In India, the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship application is submitted through the Ministry of Education’s nomination process. The MoE India typically opens applications in October–November, with nominations submitted to the CSC by December. Apply at the Ministry of Education India portal, not directly on the CSC website.

British Council GREAT Scholarships: A minimum of £10,000 (Rs.12,90,000) towards tuition. Partial only; no living stipend. Open to Indian citizens through 19 participating universities. Criteria vary by university.

Deadline: January to March for September entry.

Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarships: Full international fees plus a £17,000 (Rs.21,93,000) annual stipend. Open to international students including Indians. Competition runs automatically when you apply to a Warwick PhD program.

Deadlines vary by department.

Felix Foundation: Full fees and living costs at Oxford, Reading, SOAS, and Sussex. This program is for Indian citizens under 30 who have a first-class degree from an Indian university and demonstrate financial need.

Fewer than 20% of UKRI positions are open to international students. Those that are paid full home-rate fees plus the UKRI minimum stipend. Search FindAPhD.com with the filter “International students welcome” and your research area.

Counselor insight: Commonwealth and GREAT deadlines fall 9 to 12 months before a PhD start date. Most Indian students apply for scholarships only after receiving an admission offer, which is already too late. Run both applications in parallel from the day you email your first supervisor.

Most competitors list scholarships without explaining the structural difference between a funded studentship and self-funding. Here is what actually matters.

Note: Funded PhD students on UKRI studentships are expected to treat the PhD as a full-time commitment. The 20-hour/week work allowance applies but is rarely exercised by UKRI-funded students due to full-time research workloads.

Counselor insight: When a UK PhD position says “Home/EU students only” or “UK Research Council eligible,” Indian students are excluded. This restriction is written into the UKRI grant terms. Always read the eligibility line before spending time on a proposal.

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is the most relevant fully funded option for Indian students: it covers international-rate fees, pays a monthly stipend, and includes return airfare.

Visa refused: The most common reasons for Indian PhD students are bank statements not meeting the 28-day rule, unexplained large transfers, or documents in an unacceptable format. There is no mandatory waiting period. Contact the university’s international office immediately; they handle these matters regularly. Do not use agents who promise to “fix” documents.

IELTS score short: Most universities hold a conditional offer while you retest. You can retake IELTS without limit. If one band is pulling the score down, targeted preparation on that band for 4 to 6 weeks before a retest is more effective than general study.

Missed scholarship deadline: Commonwealth and GREAT deadlines are fixed; missing one means waiting a year. University fellowships like Warwick Chancellor’s and Edinburgh Global Research sometimes accept rolling applications through April. Confirm with the funding office directly, not just the university website.

Supervisor rejected proposal: Ask for specific feedback before revising. Some rejections happen because the research already overlaps with work underway in the supervisor’s group. Revise and approach a different supervisor in the same department or at a different university. One rejection is not a verdict.

First: Email potential supervisors now with your current transcript and a one-page research summary. Do not wait for final results. Funded positions go to students already in conversation months before applications formally open.

Second: Apply for Commonwealth and GREAT scholarships in December to January, running parallel to your university applications. These have firm, separate deadlines. Most Indian students who missed funding applied for scholarships after receiving their offer, by which point the window had closed.

Third: Calculate your full 3-year cost at Rs.129/GBP before committing to a self-funded PhD. Non-London: Rs.1,05,00,000 to Rs.1,40,00,000. London: Rs.1,40,00,000 to Rs.1,85,00,000. Build in a 15% buffer for currency movement.
