Quick Read

  • The USA has three intakes: Fall, Spring and Summer.
  • Fall 2027 applications opened on 1 August 2026.
  • Spring 2028 deadlines close between September and November 2027.
  • F-1 admission is now capped at four years maximum.
  • Application and visa costs reach Rs.1.5 lakh before departure.
  • Indian degree results arrive after most US deadlines close.

How Many Intakes in USA Are There, and When Do They Run?

US universities run three intakes in an academic year. Fall (August or September) is the primary intake, Spring (January) is the secondary intake, and Summer (May) is a limited tertiary intake offered by a minority of universities.

India is the largest source of international students in the USA. The Open Doors 2025 Report by IIE and the US Department of State recorded 363,019 Indian students in the 2024-25 academic year, a 10% rise and the second consecutive year India held the top position.

Counselor insight: The admit rate is no longer the number to plan around. Open Doors 2025 recorded a 17% drop in new international enrolments in Fall 2025, and 96% of the institutions surveyed cited visa application concerns as a contributing factor. Students are getting admits and then failing to arrive. Build your intake plan backwards from the visa interview, not the application deadline.

Fall 2027 Intake in USA: Dates, Deadlines and Who It Suits

Fall is the intake most Indian students should target. It carries the widest programme choice, the largest funding pool, and the only start date that makes you eligible to intern in your first US summer.

Undergraduate dates for Fall 2027:

  • Common App opened on 1 August 2026 for the 2026-27 cycle
  • Early Decision and Early Action deadlines: 1 or 15 November 2026
  • Regular Decision deadlines: 1 to 15 January 2027, with some public universities extending to 1 February
  • Decisions released: mid-December 2026 (early rounds) and late March 2027 (regular)
  • Reply deadline: 1 May 2027

Postgraduate dates for Fall 2027:

  • Applications open: September to October 2026, some MS programmes from August
  • Priority and Round 1 deadlines: December 2026 to January 2027
  • Final deadlines: January to February 2027, with rolling admissions at some public universities running into spring
  • PhD deadlines are earliest, typically 1 to 15 December 2026

Curricular Practical Training requires one full academic year of enrolment before you can take an off-campus internship. A student who starts in Fall 2027 completes that requirement by May 2028 and can intern that summer. A student who starts in Spring 2028 cannot.

For university shortlisting, start with the list of universities in USA with rankings and fees, and check scholarships for Indian students in the USA before you finalise your list, because funding deadlines usually sit ahead of admission deadlines. Detailed university-wise Fall deadlines are covered in our Fall intake in USA guide.

Counselor insight:The NACE Winter 2026 Salary Survey projects an average starting salary of Rs.89.72 lakh ($94,212) for US computer sciences master's graduates, Rs.88.44 lakh ($92,873) for engineering and Rs.82.43 lakh ($86,563) for business. These are employer projections across all graduates, not international-student averages. Separately, NACE's own Job Outlook data ranks a relevant internship as the most influential differentiator between two otherwise equal candidates which is why losing the internship cycle, not the intake label on your I-20, is what quietly changes the outcome.

Spring 2028 Intake in USA: When It Helps and When It Costs You

Spring is a real intake, not a consolation prize. It is also smaller in every dimension that matters.

Choose Spring 2028 if:

  • Your final semester results are delayed past the Fall deposit deadline
  • You need one more attempt at IELTS, TOEFL or the GRE
  • Your education loan sanction will not land before January 2027
  • You were rejected in the Fall 2027 round and want to reapply without a full gap year

Do not choose Spring 2028 if:

  • You are targeting a funded assistantship, since most are allocated in the Fall cycle
  • Your field depends on summer internships for placement, such as software, data, finance or consulting
  • Your target programme has a Fall-only cohort, which is common for PhD and many MBA programs

Spring deadlines arrive sooner than students expect. Applications for a January 2028 start typically close between September and November 2027, which gives you a shorter runway than Fall, not a longer one.

Counselor insight: Students who pick Spring to avoid a gap year often trade a four-month gap for a twelve-month internship delay. A Spring 2028 starter completes only one semester by May 2028 and is not CPT eligible that summer. Their first real US industry experience lands in summer 2029, by which point the Fall cohort has a completed internship on the resume.

Summer 2028 Intake in USA: Who Should Actually Consider It

Summer is the smallest of the three intakes in USA and is not offered by most universities.

  • Applications typically open in November 2027 and close by January or February 2028
  • Classes begin in May 2028 and the term ends in August 2028
  • Programme availability is narrow and mostly limited to business administration, computer science, biological sciences, finance and economics
  • Scholarship and assistantship access is minimal

Summer works as a bridge, not as a start. It suits students entering a pathway or specialised certificate program or those already in the US changing academic level.

Counselor insight: Before you apply to any summer program, ask the international student office one question in writing: does a May start count toward the academic year for CPT purposes at this university. The answer varies by institution, and it determines whether you have a working timeline or a stalled one.

How the New F-1 Rules Change Intake Planning in USA for 2027-28

On 17 July 2026, DHS published a final rule replacing duration of status with a fixed period of admission. It took effect on 15 September 2026, which means every student entering for the 2027-28 intakes is covered by it.

What changed, according to DHS Study in the States:

RuleWhat it means for you
Fixed admission periodYou are admitted for the programme length on your I-20, capped at four years, plus 30 days to arrive and 30 days to depart
Extension of StayNeeding longer means filing an EOS with USCIS and giving biometrics. This is a paid application, not a formality
I-94 controls your stayYour authorised stay is governed by the I-94 date, not the visa stamp in your passport
No lateral or reverse matriculationAfter completing a programme, you cannot start another at the same or a lower level
First-year programme changes restrictedSwitching programme during your first year is no longer permitted

How this affects intake choice:

  • Four-year bachelor's applicants are most exposed. A four-year degree plus any delay in credits can push you past the admission period, so build the EOS filing into your plan from year one.
  • Two-year MS applicants generally fit inside the cap comfortably, including a Spring start.
  • Anyone planning a second master's in the USA should reconsider. The lateral matriculation bar closes that route.
  • Every applicant should now treat travel after entry as a risk event, because a new I-94 is issued on each re-entry.

Read the full process in our guide on how to apply for an F1 visa.

Counselor insight: The most common planning error we see is students booking the visa interview after they have paid the enrolment deposit. Do it in the reverse order where the university allows a deferred deposit. Slot availability in India remains uneven across the five consular posts, and a delayed interview is the single most common reason an admit does not convert into an arrival.

Which of the Intakes in USA Fits Your Situation Right Now

Four situations, four different answers.

If you are a final-year BTech student graduating in May 2027: Target Fall 2027. Your GRE and English test should already be done by September 2026, applications submitted by December 2026, and your provisional certificate collected the week your results are declared. Do not wait for the consolidated degree certificate. Most universities accept a provisional certificate and an in-progress transcript for the I-20.

If you are a Class 12 student appearing for board exams in February and March 2027: Target Fall 2028, not Fall 2027. Your board results arrive in May 2027, after Fall 2027 deadlines have closed. Use the 2026-27 year for SAT preparation and profile building, then apply through Common App when it opens on 1 August 2027.

If you are a working professional with two to three years of experience: You have the widest choice, so use it on funding rather than speed. Target Fall 2027, apply in Round 1 by December 2026, and use the extra runway to build the bank balance that clears the financial documentation bar. Start with why the USA works for a master's if you are still comparing destinations.

If your Fall 2027 application was rejected or you could not secure funding: Spring 2028 is the right fallback, with deadlines from September to November 2027. Use the interim months to retake a test rather than resubmitting the same profile. If cost is the binding constraint, look at affordable public universities in the USA and universities with higher acceptance rates before you widen your list.

Counselor insight: Students routinely apply to eight or nine universities in the same competitiveness band. A workable Fall 2027 list is three reach, three target and two safe, with at least two of the safe options being public universities in Texas, Ohio, Arizona or North Carolina, where assistantship funding is more accessible than at ranked private programmes.

GRE, GMAT or SATWith applicationOptional at many programmes. Check each department page rather than the university homepage
SOP and LORsWith applicationTwo to three LORs. Indian faculty need four to six weeks of notice, more during exam season
PassportBefore visa stepsMust be valid at least six months beyond your intended stay. Renewals take four to six weeks
Financial documentsVisa interviewITR, Form 16, six months of bank statements, loan sanction letter, and property or FD papers if used as collateral
Form I-20After admissionIssued by the university once financial proof is accepted
SEVIS I-901 receiptBefore interviewPay after receiving the I-20. Carry the printed receipt
DS-160 confirmationBefore interviewSubmit 48 to 72 hours before the appointment

Our guide on the bank balance required for a US student visa covers the financial documentation in detail.

Counselor insight: The provisional certificate question causes more avoidable delays than any other document. Indian universities issue it within days of the result, but students often wait for the degree certificate that arrives at convocation, sometimes six months later. Collect the provisional certificate the same week your results are declared, and request an official transcript at the same time.

Dec 2027 to Jan 2028First semester endsVisa interview, departuresemester break, provisional results for off-cycle graduates

The structural problem is visible in that table. Most US deadlines close between December and February, while Indian final results are declared in June or July. That is why in-progress transcripts and provisional certificates matter so much.

Counselor insight: Book your visa interview slot in the first week you are eligible, even if your flight is not booked. Cancelled appointments reappear unpredictably, and students who check daily and hold an early slot as a backup consistently land earlier interview dates than those who wait for a convenient one.

What Applying for the Intakes in USA Costs in INR

This is spending that happens before any visa decision. Budget it as sunk cost.

ItemCost in INRCost in USD
GRE General TestRs.22,550 (approx Rs.23,452 after service charge)$237
IELTS AcademicRs.19,000$200
TOEFL iBT (alternative to IELTS)Approx Rs.16,900$177
University application fees (6 universities at approx $100 each)Rs.57,138$600
Credential evaluation (WES, if required)Rs.16,665$175
Transcripts, attestation and courierRs.6,000 to Rs.10,000$63 to $105
SEVIS I-901 feeRs.33,331$350
Visa application (MRV) feeRs.17,618$185
One-way flight, India to US East CoastRs.55,000 to Rs.90,000$578 to $945
Typical total before departureRs.2.1 lakh to Rs.2.9 lakh $2,200 to $3,050

Exchange rate used: Rs.95.23 per USD. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.

Two notes on fees:

  • The I-901 SEVIS fee is Rs.33,331 ($350) for F-1 applicants and is paid to DHS, separately from the visa application fee paid to the consulate.
  • A $250 Visa Integrity Fee was created under Public Law 119-21 and applies at visa issuance. Collection has been applied unevenly across consular posts. If it applies to you, add Rs.23,808 ($250).

For the full program budget rather than the application budget, see the MS in USA cost breakdown and the cost of studying in the USA for Indian students.

Counselor insight: Families consistently under-budget the second attempt. A retaken GRE plus a second visa application adds roughly Rs.40,000 to the bill, and the MRV fee is not refunded on refusal. Set aside one repeat cycle when you plan the pre-departure budget.

What to Do When Your Intakes in USA Plan Goes Wrong

You missed the Fall deadline. Check rolling admissions at public universities first, since many accept applications well past their stated priority date. If nothing is open, apply for Spring 2028 rather than forcing a weak late application.

You cannot get a visa slot before classes begin. Contact the international student office immediately and ask for a deferral to the next intake. Deferral is a university decision, not an entitlement, and the university must issue a new I-20 with revised dates. Some deposits are non-transferable, so ask about that in the same email.

Your visa was refused under 214(b). You can reapply, but reapplying with an unchanged file usually produces the same outcome. Strengthen the weak element first, which is most often the financial narrative or an unclear post-study plan, then reapply.

Your final results are delayed past the deposit deadline. Ask the university whether it will accept a provisional certificate with an in-progress transcript, or issue a conditional I-20. Many do. Ask in writing and keep the reply.

Your test score came in below the program requirement. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake a single section for Rs.12,650, which is faster and cheaper than a full retest. Check that your target universities accept it before booking, since acceptance is not universal.

Counselor insight: When a deferral request is refused, the usual reason is that the student asked after the term had begun. Universities have far more flexibility before the SEVIS record is terminated for non-attendance. If your interview is not scheduled four weeks before classes start, send the deferral email then, not later.

3 Takeaways on Intakes in USA

  1. Default to Fall 2027 and treat Spring 2028 as a deliberate fallback. The CPT timing difference is the deciding factor, not programme quality.
  2. Work backwards from the visa interview, not the application deadline. In the current environment, the interview slot is the binding constraint on whether an admit becomes an arrival.
  3. Ask each shortlisted university in writing whether it accepts a provisional certificate and in-progress transcript. Your Indian final results will arrive after most US deadlines close, and this one answer decides whether your timeline works.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Intakes in USA

  • What happens if I do not get an F1 visa slot before my intake starts?Β

Email your international student office as soon as the risk becomes clear and request a deferral to the next intake. The university must issue a revised I-20 with new program dates, and your SEVIS record moves with it. Ask whether your deposit transfers, since policies differ. Also confirm your university's latest permitted arrival date, as some allow a short late-arrival window.

  • How early should I apply for USA intakes for a master's?

Begin 12 to 15 months before your intended start. For Fall 2027, that means taking the GRE and English test by September or October 2026, requesting LORs by October 2026, and submitting Round 1 applications in December 2026. Starting later is possible but usually costs you scholarship consideration, since funding rounds close ahead of admission deadlines.

  • Can I apply for two intakes in USA at the same time?

You can apply to different universities for different intakes in the same cycle. Each application carries its own fee, typically around Rs.9,523 ($100), and its own document set. Some universities will not accept two applications from the same student in one cycle, so check the policy on the program page before you pay.

  • How many semesters are there in a year in the USA?

Most US universities run two main semesters. Fall runs from late August to December, and Spring runs from January to May. A shorter optional summer session runs from May to August. Some universities run a quarter system instead, with three ten-week terms plus a summer quarter, which shifts application deadlines earlier.

  • Is the May intake available in USA?

Summer intake exists but is offered by a limited number of universities, mostly for business administration, computer science, biological sciences, finance and economics. Scholarship access is minimal. Treat it as a bridge into a program rather than a primary start date, and confirm with the university whether a May start counts toward the CPT academic year requirement.

  • Is the January intake good in USA?

The January intake, known as Spring, works well for students who need extra time for test scores, results or loan sanction. The trade-offs are real. Program choice drops by roughly 30% to 40%, assistantship funding is largely allocated during the Fall cycle, and a Spring starter is not CPT eligible for that year's summer internship.

  • When should I apply for the Fall 2027 intake in USA?

Common App opened for undergraduate applications on 1 August 2026. Early Decision and Early Action deadlines fall on 1 or 15 November 2026, and Regular Decision deadlines run from 1 to 15 January 2027. Postgraduate applications open between September and October 2026, with most Round 1 deadlines in December 2026 and final deadlines through February 2027.

  • Which intake is best for USA?

Fall is the strongest choice for most Indian students. It offers nearly all programs, the largest scholarship and assistantship allocation, and it is the only start date that makes you CPT eligible in time for your first US summer internship. Spring is a legitimate fallback if your results, test scores or funding will not be ready for Fall deadlines.

  • How many intakes in USA are there for international students?

US universities offer three intakes. Fall begins in late August or early September, Spring begins in January, and summer begins in May. Fall is the primary intake with the widest program and funding availability. Spring is the secondary intake with roughly 30% to 40% fewer programs. Summer is offered by a minority of universities for specialised or short programs.
