GRE Accepted Universities in Singapore: The Verified 2027-28 List

All three major Singapore universities accept the GRE, only one makes it compulsory, and none of them publishes a minimum score. That combination makes Singapore the strongest GRE destination in Asia for Indian applicants and also the hardest one to plan for, because there is no number to aim at.

Before you read any list of GRE accepted universities in Singapore, three states need separating. Required with exemptions means the program will not consider an incomplete application, though certain applicants are excused. Highly recommended means you can technically apply without it and will be at a disadvantage. Optional means the score is read only if you choose to submit it.

Here is where each program sits for 2027-28.

Two things follow from this table that no competing page states. First, the only program in the list that will reject an Indian applicant purely for a missing test score is NTU's MSc Business Analytics. Second, and more importantly, every exemption in that right-hand column is written for somebody else.

Counselor insight: Students shortlist by university and then ask about "the NUS GRE requirement". There is no such thing. NUS Business School treats the test as optional, the Business Analytics Centre calls it highly recommended, and the two are different admissions offices. Check the program page, not the university.

Why Every GRE Waiver in Singapore Is Closed to Indian Applicants

Three institutions publish exemptions, and all three are written for the same group.

NTU's MSc Business Analytics makes GRE or GMAT compulsory, then exempts graduates from a Singapore autonomous university, with graduates of leading universities considered case by case. SMU waives the test for PhD applicants holding a Bachelor's or Master's from SMU, NUS, NTU or SUTD, and for the PhD in Psychology extends that list to SIT and SUSS, naming them together as the Singapore autonomous universities. NUS MSBA's own brochure applied the same rule for degree holders from the four local universities.

None of this targets Indian students. These offices already know what a second upper from NTU means and have no equivalent calibration for a 7.8 CGPA from a tier-two Indian engineering college. The GRE is how they build it.

The practical effect is unchanged. With an Indian degree, assume no waiver reaches you and budget for the test wherever one is named. NTU's case-by-case door is the only opening, and it is discretionary and unpublished.

Counselor insight: Do not email NTU in December asking whether your IIT or NIT degree counts as a leading university. Ask in September, before you decide whether to book the test, and treat a non-committal reply as a no.

What GRE Score Should You Target When Nobody Publishes a Cutoff?

No Singapore university publishes a minimum GRE score. The ranges circulating online, typically presented as NUS 317 to 328, NTU 315 to 325 and SMU 310 to 320, do not appear on any official admissions page and carry no source. Treat them as unverified.

There are two anchors you can actually use. The first is NUS MSc HCMA's stated expectation of roughly 700 out of 800 on the GMAT, or the GMAT equivalent in GRE, for applicants who choose to submit. The second is the repeated emphasis on the quantitative score specifically. NUS MSBA asks for a good quantitative score in GRE or GMAT, not a good total, and pairs it with a strong mathematics foundation.

That points to a different preparation strategy from the one most Indian students run. For analytics, finance and quantitative programmes in Singapore, a lopsided profile with a very strong Quant section reads better than a balanced middling total. Verbal matters least here of any major destination, partly because these programmes separately assess English through IELTS, TOEFL or a Medium of Instruction letter.

Where the test is compulsory, as at NTU, the no-cut-off policy means submitting is always better than waiting. Where it is optional, as across NUS Business School, submit only if the score genuinely strengthens a file that needs strengthening.

Counselor insight: Aim for a Quant score at or above 165 if you are targeting NUS MSBA or NTU Business Analytics. It is not a published requirement anywhere, but it is the level at which a quantitative score stops being a question mark in a pool where most applicants are engineers.

GRE Cost, Score Codes and Documents for Indian Applicants

ETS lists the GRE General Test at Rs.25,522 ($249) for all areas of the world outside China, with the fee having increased effective 1 August 2026. Rescheduling costs Rs.5,650 ($55), each Additional Score Report beyond the free allocation costs Rs.4,150 ($40), and score reinstatement costs Rs.5,000 ($50). Indian test takers register through the ETS India site.

Scores remain valid for five years, and both NTU and SMU enforce that window explicitly. You get four free score recipients on test day, so select them then rather than paying Rs.4,150 each later.

Institution codes worth noting: 4642 for NUS Business School MSc Programmes, which covers several programs with a single send, and 2861 for SMU's PhD in Business and Economics.

Counselor insight: The Medium of Instruction letter is the most under-used document in Singapore applications. Most Indian degrees are taught in English, and a properly worded MOI letter from your university can remove the IELTS requirement at NUS entirely. Request it while you still have campus access.

When Things Go Wrong at GRE Accepted Universities in Singapore

Your GRE score is weak and NTU makes it compulsory. Submit it. NTU states there is no minimum cut-off and that a low score will not exclude your application. An incomplete application will.

You assumed a waiver applied to you. It does not, and realising this in January against a 31 January deadline ends your cycle. Confirm your exemption status in writing before you skip the test.

Your score is more than five years old. NTU and SMU both enforce a five-year window from the application or proposed admission date. A 2021 score will not carry a 2027 application.

An offer arrives and you cannot pay the acceptance fee in 14 days. Contact the program office immediately rather than letting the deadline pass, and have a loan sanction letter ready in advance as evidence.

You took an optional test and scored mid-range. Where NUS calls the GMAT or GRE optional, you are under no obligation to submit. A 305 in an optional field invites a question your transcript never raised.

Counselor insight: Admission and the Student's Pass are separate processes with separate timelines. Clearing a test problem in February still leaves a tight immigration runway to August. Solve both on one calendar.
