I remember when I was in 10th standard, we had one chapter in our English textbook and that was about the asafoetida, a spice which is very common in our Indian cuisine. While teaching, it got started with a short introduction about it. As we heard the word asafoetida, the teacher asked all of us to speak something about it whatever we know. I remember very well that this chapter is being taught inside the classroom which is near to the stage of our school. As we laughed, it actually echoed over there and that was really a very chilling moment for all of us. One of my friends said that it is a sweet dish and actually it is not but it is something which is put into the dal which is made in our India. Despite of creating such humor also, the teacher encouraged all of us to ponder about it one more time. After that, many of the people said that it is a very savoury in nature and we were somehow close to that. Another thing that created a lot of fun in between the class was the pronunciation made by each and every student over there including the teacher. Many of my companions pronounced it in a funny manner for example asafoetida and that was a very refreshing moment for all of us. I can never forget that class in my whole life.

So, the last English class that I really enjoyed was when I was in my 8th grade and my English teacher Ms. Sujata loved me. We had learnt Julius Caesar that day and not just from the textbook but we also had to enact it. That made me a fan. I really enjoyed playing the Julius Caesar play and there were some really good takeaways that I had taken from that lesson that day and I have never enjoyed studying and learning from her and from the way she teaches like that ever before. Also, she really believed in me. She really got me the confidence that I needed and she really made sure that I would fit into the character. There was this another time where the same teacher had also acted as a judge for our mono acting class where I had played the role of Mantara from Ramayana. She pushed me to take up the role. It was quite challenging but she believed in me. She told me that if you couldn't then nobody would ever do it. I really aced it. I got the first place in the competition and since ever I started to believe in myself as an actor. Even now at times I do act in a few short films that are French short and I think that's where my career in acting started.

Can you share more about the challenges you faced while preparing for the mono acting competition?
Preparing for the mono acting competition was challenging due to the complexity of the character Mantara. I had to understand her emotions and motivations deeply. Ms. Sujata's guidance helped me navigate these challenges, and her belief in my abilities pushed me to excel and ultimately win the competition.

As a part of my IELTS preparation, I recently took a 4-day English Live Interactive Session app called UpGrad and the tutor was teaching about how to do the writing part and how to deal with the listening, reading and speaking part in a very step-by-step, in a very understandable way. I took this class two weeks before and it was held online and the thing which I really liked about the class was that it was a very interactive session and there were a lot of participants but the tutor was presenting everything in a very crisp and concise manner so that it was understandable even to a small student. In between the class, the teacher used to call random names and ask us questions which made us feel like a more one-to-one session.

In the class, I learned various writing techniques such as structuring essays, using cohesive devices, and developing arguments effectively. The tutor emphasized the importance of planning before writing and provided us with templates that could help in organizing our thoughts.

One English lesson I really enjoyed was during my college days. Our teacher introduced a storytelling activity instead of a regular grammar lesson, which immediately made the class feel different and exciting. She gave each of us a short situation and asked us to create a small story around it. We had a few minutes to think and then we had to share it with the class. I remember feeling slightly nervous at first, but once I started speaking, the atmosphere became very supportive and relaxed. What made the lesson memorable was how interactive it was. Everyone shared unique stories and we also discussed the vocabulary and expressions used by each person. It was the first time I realized that English could be learned through creativity and not just through textbooks. By the end of the class, I felt much more confident expressing my thoughts in English. That lesson stood out because it was enjoyable, meaningful and genuinely improved my speaking skills.

Follow up questions

How did the storytelling activity impact your confidence in speaking English?
The storytelling activity significantly boosted my confidence. Initially, I was nervous, but as I shared my story, I felt the supportive atmosphere from my classmates. This encouragement helped me express my thoughts more freely, making me realize that speaking English could be enjoyable and less intimidating.

What other teaching methods do you think can make English lessons more engaging?
I believe methods like role-playing, group discussions, and interactive games can make lessons engaging. These activities encourage participation and creativity, allowing students to practice English in real-life scenarios. Incorporating technology, like language apps or online discussions, could also enhance learning.

Can you share a specific story you created during that lesson?
Sure! I created a story about a lost dog that found its way home with the help of a kind stranger. The story revolved around themes of friendship and bravery. It was fun to weave in vocabulary we had learned, and I enjoyed seeing how others interpreted their situations creatively.

When I was a kid, I had a little pencil box which had these four buttons which gave the pencil box an operative use. When you press the button, the box would open up. When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

One of the most enjoyable English lessons I have ever had was during my final year of high school. Our teacher organized a creative writing session where we had to write a short story based on a random picture she displayed on the board. The picture showed an old man sitting alone on a park bench during winter which immediately sparked my imaginations. At the beginning of the class, the teacher explained how to structure a story including the introduction, climax and conclusion. Then she gave us 30 minutes to write our own versions. After that, a few students including me were asked to read our stories aloud to the class. It was fun listening to how differently everyone interpreted the same image. I enjoyed this lesson so much because it gave us the freedom to express our creativity instead of just focusing on grammar or vocabulary drills. The teacher was very encouraging and gave constructive feedback on how to make our writing more descriptive and emotionally engaging. It made me realize that learning English can be both fun and deeply personal when it involves imagination and storytelling.

One English lesson that I really enjoyed was during my final year of high school. It was a creative writing class where our teacher asked us to write a short story based on a single picture. The picture showed a rainy street with a man standing under a lamppost holding an umbrella. At first it seemed like a simple exercise but our teacher encouraged us to think beyond the obvious and build a story around emotions, atmosphere and imagination. We spent a few minutes brainstorming ideas and then she played soft instrumental music in the background to help us get into a creative mood. I wrote a story about a man waiting for someone he loved but who never came back. Later a few students including me read our stories aloud and everyone gave feedback. The atmosphere was so lively and engaging that we started laughing, sharing ideas and appreciating each other's creativity. I really enjoyed that class because it made me feel English a little bit alive and expressive. Rather than just a subject full of grammar rules, it helped me discover that writing could be emotional and personal. Most importantly it gave me confidence to express myself in English not just correctly but beautifully.

An English class that I enjoyed was when I was in my school, I guess in my 8th grade, when a teacher enacted the whole skit which she was teaching all by herself. And she had dressed up as 3 different people, but we were so astonished just by looking at how amazingly she was carrying out all the 3 different roles in one person, and we understood the whole thing, like we were not at all confused, and it was interesting and same time, I really wish more teachers like her would be brought to the education system so that every student can experience something like what she did, and I personally think that teachers can be so much more creative in subjects deemed to be boring by students like English, and they can make it so much more fun for children that they actually start loving the subject.

    Band 7

I very vividly remember an English class that was taken when I was in grade 10. It was by my English teacher. He taught us about the speech given by Brutus in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. We had to memorize the speech given by Brutus to Romans. I still remember the first few lines, them being, Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears. I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. I still remember it because of the way we were taught with so much description and variety that it just etched into our memories. We also had a few role plays which were in fact assessed for our final grade. We did all kinds of funny and impromptu stuff that it just ended up becoming a huge memory for all of us. In general, we all loved the teacher because of his unique way of teaching. He always used to include fun facts or out-of-the-topic information which was not actually necessary for the subject, but to keep us hooked on to the class matter, he used to just go off-topic sometimes. And this is why I remember it very clearly in my memory even now.

One English lesson I truly enjoyed was during my 10th grade. It was a literature class and we were studying the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. I have always liked English literature but this particular class felt unforgettable because of the way my teacher taught it. Instead of explaining the poem in a typical classroom setting, she took us outside for a walk around the school campus. As we walked along the pathways and garden areas, she read the poem aloud in a calm expressive tone. The experience felt almost poetic in itself. The environment around us, trees, narrow paths and quiet spaces perfectly matched the theme of the poem. What made the lesson special was how naturally she explained every line and every word. She didn't just translate the poem, she helped us feel it. She talked about the choices, regrets and how sometimes small decisions can change the direction of our lives. It felt like she took us through the poet's heart and mind, allowing us to understand his emotions rather than just memorising the meanings. By the end of the lesson, the poem wasn't just literature, it became a personal experience. Even today, whenever I read or hear the poem, I remember that walk and how beautifully that lesson was taught.

So my first English class which I really loved was the one with my teacher Mrs. Anjali. She is a very phenomenal teacher to be very honest and everything about her class was so interactive. We were taught the topic The Tempest by William Shakespeare. It's a very wonderfully written play and I loved the use of metaphors, similes and all the literary devices in that play. At the same time the teacher made it very happening for us as we all were included in that class. We all were given the whole experience. We were able to experience the whole vibe of the play. We could actually feel the tempest happening in the class. The teacher was very polite, her knowledge splendid and I really enjoyed that class on that day. The best thing which I felt was that every child was active in the class. Usually you don't experience people being very attentive in the class. At least there are a few people those who are not but in that class especially every child was attentive. Every child was given an equal opportunity to speak, an equal opportunity to present their views which made it very interactive and whenever a class is interactive I personally feel that it's a quality that a teacher possesses. So yeah that was my favorite English class. It was about the play The Tempest and I really enjoyed the whole experience on that particular class.

    Band 7

In the month of August, in a classroom of Baiju's, I had attended an English class session in which we were being taught about phonetics. And the teacher in charge was very fun and interactive. She made the session lively by making sounds, preparing presentations, and even preparing activities for us, which we thoroughly enjoyed. And there was a plethora of activities in which we gained a lot of knowledge about phonetics. It was a wonderful class and I would always want to be taken back to that month to join the class.

    Band 7

One of the best cherished memories of mine regarding an English class was learning active and passive voice. It was taught to me in my 6th grade, I learned it at school and my teacher was really lenient and friendly with others and myself. In spite of making mistakes, her demeanor and calmness encouraged everyone to learn the active and passive voice. She at first gave an example that the weather is cloudy today and it's raining and then she gave an example in passive that the cloudy weather has made it rain today. At first it was really difficult to understand because it was something new of a concept and the children were really eager to learn it and that was the highlight of that lesson and the eagerness of the children who were my friends that made the class really interesting. We were not scolded, not yelled at by the teacher in spite of making errors that day that could have really destroyed our confidence in learning it but she did no such thing and that made it really easy for us to learn active and passive voice and even today whenever I have to use the active and passive voice, I am grateful to my teacher about it.
