What the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Is, and What It Is Not

The Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship is repayable interest-free financial assistance for Indian students entering a Master’s or PhD program, in India or abroad, from the Fall intake.

FeatureDetail
Offered byNarotam Sekhsaria Foundation
Established2002, through an endowment by Narotam Sekhsaria
LevelPostgraduate only: Master’s and PhD
GeographyIndia and abroad
Award typeRepayable, interest-free, 100% merit-based
CoversTuition fees, full or part
Awards per yearApproximately 15 to 20

Narotam Sekhsaria is a chemical engineering graduate of the University Department of Chemical Technology in Mumbai who built Gujarat Ambuja Cements into one of India’s most efficient cement companies. The Foundation he endowed in 2002 works in health, education and employment generation.

Three things this scholarship is not:

  1. Not a grant. You sign a repayment agreement with a co-applicant or guarantor. The money comes back.
  2. Not a bank loan. There is no interest, no collateral and no credit assessment. Merit decides everything.
  3. Not for undergraduate study. The Foundation’s separate Silver Jubilee scholarship funds graduation courses, but only for students from Ambuja Schools. If you are in Class 12, this page is not for you.

Scholars to date number 288, spread across 64 universities in 7 countries. The list runs from Harvard, MIT and Yale in the list of universities in USA to Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Imperial among the top universities in UK for Masters, alongside IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and Delhi School of Economics in India.

Counselor insight: The Foundation awards roughly 15 to 20 scholarships a year and has funded 288 scholars in total since 2002. That is fewer people in 24 years than a single IIT department graduates in a year. Apply, but treat this as a bonus on top of a funding plan, never as the plan itself.

Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Amount: Why the Rs.20 Lakh Figure Is Wrong

Search this scholarship and almost every page tells you it is worth up to Rs.20 lakh. The Foundation’s own 2026 FAQ document says otherwise, twice. Question 2 states there is no upper or lower limit to the amount awarded. Question 22 states there is no fixed maximum or minimum, and that the amount is determined by the management based on factors including the candidate’s interview performance.

The Rs.20 lakh figure does not appear in any current Foundation material. Do not build a budget around it.

QuestionWhat the Foundation says
How much?No upper or lower limit. Decided case by case.
What does it cover?Tuition fees, full or part scholarship
What does it not cover?Living costs, travel, insurance, visa fees
When is the amount disclosed?End of June
How is it paid?Into the scholar’s Indian savings account, in rupees, on arrival at the university
In how many instalments? One or three

Two consequences follow, and both matter more than the headline number.

First, tuition is only part of your bill. A two-year MS cost in USA runs well past tuition once housing, food, insurance and flights are counted, and none of that is covered here.

Second, you will not know your figure until end of June. By then most universities have taken a deposit and your loan needs to be sanctioned for visa financial documentation. Plan as though the award is zero, then treat whatever arrives as prepayment on your loan.

Counselor insight: The amount is set after your interview, and the panel asks what you intend to do with the degree. A candidate who says “MS in Computer Science, and NACE projects the 2026 US master’s average in my field at $94,212, so I can service the first repayment instalment comfortably” is answering a different question from one who says “I want to work in tech.” Numbers in the interview change the number in the offer.

Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Eligibility for the 2027-28 Cycle

Six criteria, all published by the Foundation. Dates below follow the confirmed 2026-27 pattern and shift by one year for 2027-28.

  1. Applicant must be an Indian national, residing in India.
  2. Applicant must be below 30 years of age as of 31 January of the cycle year.
  3. Applicant must have graduated from an accredited Indian university.
  4. Students in their final year or awaiting results are also eligible.
  5. Applicant must be planning postgraduate study at a top ranking institution from the Fall intake.
  6. Applicants awaiting a university decision may apply. The award is subject to securing admission.

Six rules the rest of the internet leaves out:

RuleDetail
Test scoresYou can apply with no GRE or GMAT score at all
University choicesUp to 10 preferred universities in Part 3 of the form
Deferred admitsEligible, provided the course starts that Fall with a confirmed admit letter
Dual doctoratesCotutelle and joint doctoral programmes are eligible
Already enrolledNot eligible once your course has commenced
Field of studyNo restriction. Sciences, engineering, management, law, humanities, architecture all qualify

There is no published list of approved institutions, so “top ranking” is assessed by the panel against your chosen program. Browsing university listings by subject rank helps you judge whether your shortlist reads credibly. For subject-specific funding routes that sit alongside this one, see the guidance on law scholarships for Indian students, and on exams required to study abroad if you are still deciding which test to sit.

Counselor insight: The age bar is measured on 31 January, not at course start. A student who finished BTech at 22 and worked four years in IT services is 26 or 27 and comfortable. A student who took a two-year break and already holds one Master’s is often 29 in the January window, which means this cycle is the only one they get.

How to Apply for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship in Seven Steps

The Foundation invites applications in January every year, entirely online.

  1. Register on the scholarship portal when it opens in January.
  2. Log in using the email address and password created at registration.
  3. Pay Rs.500 online. The registration fee is non-refundable.
  4. Complete Full Application Parts 1, 2 and 3 and submit. An automated confirmation email follows.
  5. Upload documents if you are shortlisted for the next phase. Nothing is uploaded before this.
  6. Attend the interview, scheduled between April and June.
  7. Attend the orientation program in July in Mumbai if selected. Attendance at both the interview and Orientation is mandatory.
Application partWhat it asks for
Part 1Personal and academic details, including year-wise CGPA as shown on your grade sheet
Part 2Professional experience if any, internships, projects
Part 3Proposed university and course, hobbies, extracurricular activities, Statement of Purpose, LOR details

Four things that catch applicants out:

  • Interviews are online video interviews. Several websites claim they are held in person in Mumbai. Only the July Orientation requires travel.
  • Applications are not reviewed on a rolling basis. Everything is assessed after the deadline, so submitting in January buys you safety margin, not advantage.
  • The form cannot be downloaded or posted. Online submission only.
  • You can edit until you submit, and not after.

Part 3 carries the Statement of Purpose, and since scores are optional, this is where the application is won. Work from a proper Statement of Purpose format rather than reusing your university essay.

Counselor insight: The Foundation confirms applicants may apply without GRE and GMAT scores. That sounds like a relief and is actually a warning. Strip out the scorecard and a panel shortlisting to 15 or 20 places is reading your Statement of Purpose, your projects and your university logic. Marksheets alone do not survive that filter.

Documents Required for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship

Nothing is submitted at application stage. Shortlisted candidates get roughly one week to produce all of the following.

DocumentIndia-specific detail you need to plan for
Attested marksheets, all years of UG and PG studyIf you graduate in May or June, your consolidated marksheet may not exist yet. Request year-wise attested copies during your final semester
Attested scorecards for any qualifying exam takenApplies to GRE, GMAT, CAT or GATE. Only exams you actually sat
University acceptance letter with fee structureThe fee structure matters as much as the admit. Download the official cost sheet, not the marketing page
Reference lettersMust be on letterhead, signed and sealed, or emailed to the Foundation from an official or company address. Use a proper Letter of Recommendation for Master’s structure
Proof of any other funding, scholarship or fee waiverIncludes university tuition waivers and assistantships. Disclose all of it
Latest Income Tax Returns of the co-applicantThis is the point where a parent or guardian becomes formally involved. Sort it before you are shortlisted
Attested copy of the passportApply or renew early. Tatkal processing during peak season is not something to rely on

The Foundation may request additional documents for verification.

Counselor insight: Shortlisted applicants get about one week to upload. Indian universities routinely take four to eight weeks to issue a consolidated marksheet after final results. If you graduate in May and are shortlisted in April, you are being asked for documents on a degree you have not formally received. Collect attested year-wise marksheets in your final semester, not after the email arrives.

English test dates drive the autumn block, so check IELTS practice tests and TOEFL exam dates before you commit to a January application. Note also that the TOEFL scoring format changed in January 2026, so read the TOEFL 2026 format changes before you book.

Counselor insight: End of June is when the Foundation discloses your amount. It is also when final-semester results land, when universities want deposits, and when your loan must be sanctioned for visa financial documentation. Three deadlines, one month. Get the loan sanctioned for the full amount in April and treat the award as prepayment.

Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Repayment: What You Actually Owe

The first year after your course ends is a grace period. Repayment then runs over three years.

Year after course completionShare of award repaid
Year 1Nil. Grace period
Year 230%
Year 335%
Year 435%

Two details the aggregator pages miss. Repayment is an annual lump sum, not a monthly EMI. And the schedule is fixed in the agreement signed by you and your co-applicant, so it cannot be adjusted later to suit your circumstances.

Worked example on a Rs.15,00,000 award:

YearAmount due
Year 2Rs.4,50,000
Year 3Rs.5,25,000
Year 4Rs.5,25,000

Now set that against real graduate earnings.

Destination and fieldReported figureIn INRYear-2 instalment as share of one year’s pay
USA, Computer Sciences, master’s, Class of 2026 projection$94,212Rs.89.88 lakh5.0%
USA, Engineering, master’s, Class of 2026 projection$92,873Rs.88.60 lakh5.1%
USA, Business, master’s, Class of 2026 projection$86,563Rs.82.58 lakh5.5%
UK, science subjects, median 15 months after graduatingยฃ30,000Rs.38.40 lakh11.7%
UK, non-science subjects, median 15 months after graduatingยฃ28,495Rs.36.47 lakh12.3%

US figures are projections from the NACE Winter 2026 Salary Survey, published February 2026. UK figures are from HESA Graduate Outcomes, accredited official statistics released on 4 June 2026 covering 2023/24 graduates.

The interest you avoid is the real prize. On a Rs.15,00,000 commercial education loan repaid over four years at an illustrative 10% per annum, interest alone comes to roughly Rs.3,20,000. Here it is zero.

Because the award covers only part of your tuition, you will still need borrowing alongside it. Compare options in the guides to the best education loan for study abroad and the SBI abroad education loan, and check whether you qualify for interest subsidy under a government education loan for study abroad.

Exchange rates used: Rs.95.40 per USD and Rs.128 per GBP, as of 1 August 2026. Verify the current RBI reference rate before you finalise any budget.

Counselor insight: Run this arithmetic before you accept. A Rs.4,50,000 lump sum is 5% of a US computer science master’s starting package and nearly 12% of a UK median graduate salary, per NACE and HESA. Same award, same schedule, very different pressure. Where you study affects how this repayment feels more than how much you borrow.

Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship vs JN Tata vs Inlaks

Most applicants are eligible for two of these three and apply to only one.

The J N Tata Endowment has awarded loan scholarships to more than 5,700 Indian students since 1892. Inlaks has supported Indian students at American, UK and European institutions since 1976.

Counselor insight: These three windows sit almost on top of each other: the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship closed 23 March 2026, J N Tata 29 March, Inlaks around 31 March. One six-week stretch, one statement of purpose, and three different eligibility sets. A BTech computer science applicant is excluded from Inlaks outright and eligible for the other two. An applicant aged 32 is out of this scholarship and squarely inside J N Tata. Work out which two you qualify for before you write a word.

Should You Apply for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship? Four Scenarios

If you are a final-year BTech student graduating May 2027 with no admits yet: apply. Final-year students and those awaiting results are explicitly eligible, and so are applicants still waiting on university decisions. List all 10 target universities in Part 3 so a later, better offer does not affect your award.

If you are 29 as of January 2027, three years into an IT services job, targeting a one-year MBA: apply this cycle. You cross the age bar next January and this is the only window you have. Your work experience strengthens Part 2, which most fresh graduates leave thin.

If you are a BA Economics graduate targeting an MA in the UK with no GRE: apply here and to Inlaks. Neither requires a test score and Inlaks actively favours humanities and social sciences. Size your repayment against the HESA non-science median of ยฃ28,495 (Rs.36.47 lakh), not against US figures. The UK vs USA comparison is worth reading before you commit.

If you are a BTech CSE graduate heading to a US MS with a Rs.45,00,000 loan in progress: apply, but only as a loan-reduction tool. Inlaks excludes computer science, your amount lands end of June, and it covers tuition alone. If the total is the problem rather than the interest, look first at the cheapest universities in USA for Masters.

Counselor insight: Of these four, only the second faces a deadline that is not the application deadline. The under-30 rule removes one applicant profile permanently every year. Everyone else can reapply next January. If you are 28 or 29 this January, the cycle in front of you is the cycle you have.

What to Do If Your Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Application Goes Wrong

ProblemWhat to do
You missed the March deadlineThe window is annual and opens in January. There is no rolling review and no late submission. Plan for next January and line up parallel funding now
You have no admit letter yetThis is allowed. The award is conditional on securing admission. If a better offer arrives later it does not affect your award, provided you listed that university in Part 3
You are shortlisted but a marksheet is pendingEmail pgscholarship@nsfoundation.co.in and explain before the week runs out. Do not submit an incomplete set silently
You are not shortlistedThe Rs.500 is not refundable and there is no appeal. Redirect to university-side aid and government schemes for the same intake
Your course has already startedYou are not eligible. The Foundation is explicit that you cannot apply once the course has commenced
Someone offers to process your application for a feeThe Foundation communicates by email and the only payment is the Rs.500 registration fee on the official portal. The Foundation publishes its own scholarship fraud warning. Treat every other request for money as fraud

If this cycle has closed, the two useful next moves are checking central and state options in the guide to Indian government scholarships to study abroad, and running your profile through a scholarship finder to see what is still open for your intake.

Counselor insight: MEA data tabled in Parliament shows Indian higher education enrolments abroad fell 5.7% in 2025, from 1.33 million to 1.254 million. Fewer applicants does not improve your odds here, because the Foundation caps awards at 15 to 20 regardless of volume. A softer market does not widen this particular door.

3 Takeaways on Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship

  1. Budget as though the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship award is zero. There is no published cap and no figure until end of June, so sanction your loan for the full amount in April and treat any award as prepayment.
  2. Diarise January 2027 and apply to J N Tata and Inlaks in the same window. All three close within nine days of each other and the eligibility sets do not overlap.
  3. Collect attested marksheets, scorecards and your co-applicant’s ITR during your final semester. Shortlisted candidates get roughly one week to produce everything.

Frequently Asked Questions About Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship

What happens if I miss the deadline or am not shortlisted?

Applications are assessed only after the deadline, with no rolling review and no late entries, so a missed deadline means waiting for the next January window. The Rs.500 registration fee is not refundable whether or not you succeed, and there is no appeal process. Redirect to university-side aid and government schemes for the same intake.

Where are the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship interviews held?

The Foundation conducts online video interviews, scheduled between April and June. No travel is required for this stage. Selected scholars must then attend an in-person Orientation Programme in Mumbai in July, and attendance at both the interview and the Orientation is mandatory for the award to stand.

Can I apply without an admission letter?

Applicants who have applied to universities and are awaiting acceptance are eligible. The award is subject to securing admission. You may list up to 10 preferred universities, and receiving a better offer later does not affect your scholarship provided that university was named in your application.

Do I need GRE or GMAT to apply for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship?

Applicants can apply without GRE and GMAT scores. If you have sat GRE, GMAT, CAT or GATE, attested scorecards are requested only if you are shortlisted. With scores optional, your Statement of Purpose, projects and university choices in Part 3 carry the weight of the application.

How many students get the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship every year?

Approximately 15 to 20 students are awarded scholarships annually, depending on the quality of applications received. The Foundation has supported 288 scholars in total across 64 universities in 7 countries since the programme began. That makes this one of the more competitive private funding routes available to Indian postgraduate applicants.

What is the last date to apply for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship?

Applications are invited in January each year and close in the third week of March. For the 2026-27 cycle the deadline was 5pm on 23 March 2026, extended from an earlier 18 March date. Expect a comparable window for 2027-28 and check the official portal in January rather than relying on projected dates.

Who is eligible for the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship?

Indian nationals residing in India, below 30 years of age as of 31 January of the cycle year, who have graduated from an accredited Indian university. Final-year students and those awaiting results qualify. You must be planning postgraduate study from the Fall intake, and applicants still awaiting university decisions may apply, with the award conditional on admission.

Is the Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship a loan or a grant?

It is repayable interest-free financial assistance, which sits between the two. You pay back the full amount with no interest, starting one year after your course ends. Because there is no interest, no collateral and no credit check, it is far cheaper than a bank loan. Because it is repayable, it is not a grant.

How much is the Narotam Sekhsaria scholarship amount?ย

There is no upper or lower limit. The Foundation’s 2026 FAQ document states the amount is decided by management for each selected scholar, based on factors including interview performance. It covers tuition fees, either fully or partly, and is disclosed at the end of June. The widely quoted Rs.20 lakh cap does not appear in current Foundation material.
